Pets for Pirates

  • I saw there was a lot of discussions about pets. I figured i should throw my hat into the ring and give my ideas of how i would like to see pets be used. I would love to see pets not only be cosmetic. Each type of animal would have different types of abilities. Some examples would be:
    Dogs

    • Dig: your mans best friend could hunt down your waiting plunder near by and start digging it up. (Including them sometimes digging up random loot)
    • Chew toy: on bigger islands it can take some time to hunting down down your bounty targets. So your best friend makes it a bit easier tracking them down.
    • Heard: chasing after animals makes it easier when your dog stops them in their tracks for a brief second.
      Parrot
    • Intruder: Your parrot would squawk once an enemy has boarded your ship
      Monkey
    • Shiny: If an enemy ship gets way too close to your ship your monkey will take it upon themselves to quickly search their ship. Only searching one area and bringing back small loot they may have aboard. (They can only steal small things if its in the area they search. If shot at it will drop the loot and flee)
      Cat
Well lets be honest i got no idea. They own you.

I would also like to see that every type of animal would be obtainable in game whether it would be some form of accomplishments or randomly finding them on an island. Maybe the pets would have a cosmetic slot for them so to get different kind of dogs would be cosmetic through micro-transaction, accomplishments, or milestones. Making pets available to all but depending on your time spent in game would be the best way to handle them (meaning how you spend your time in game could determine what pets you could get or find). Maybe some ghost pets could be bought through micro-transactions?

How cool would it be exploring an island with mans best friend and finding a wolf that you could befriend. Once befriended it would become a skin for your doggos.

  • A bat or sea serpent monster creature would be cool as well.

  • I like this idea of having pets with abilities. Which, maybe if they add fishing, cats could randomly bring you fish?

  • These are awesome ideas! The only concern I have is that this would mean having a pet gives you a great advantage in the game, and they said pets would have to be paid for with real life cash. I personally don't like games where the richer players are stronger than the others.

  • @princes-lettuce Well this is only my idea of how i wish the pet system would be. Also the abilities or things the animals would do wouldn't be a huge advantage. That's why i said make them obtainable to all. Since they will be cosmetic only i'm okay for them to be buy-able. But yes in the route Rare is taking my idea wouldn't work. That's okay as long as they don't do any content locked behind a paywall.

  • @insanexjok3rx said in Pets for Pirates:

    Parrot

    • Intruder: Your parrot would squawk once an enemy has boarded your ship

Someone suggested this a couple of months ago and honestly I think it's one of the best ideas that's been floated. But would be best if every ship had one, and unfortunately pets are $ items.

  • @lucid-stew Oh really i didn't know someone had this idea first. Well then its their idea. However it does suck. Would make pets a lot better though if they could do something for you other than cosmetic. But content that give players advantages should never be paid for. Just look at Destiny 2 and Battlefront 2.

  • Pets (cats and parrots were featured in the E3 2016 trailer) were already confirmed by RARE, and are going to be available via microtransactions. I would seriously avoid having any abilities grafted onto them, lest we incur accusations of "Pay to Win" and justify the complaints of those who are already decrying how mtx's will kill the game.

  • @blam320 I know they are confirmed and are only cosmetics through buying them. This was only an idea that could only work if they were obtainable for everyone in game. It was my rant on how they could have made the pets. My idea wont be anything but that. An idea.

  • @insanexjok3rx I do like the idea of pets and also pets that help you but they might need some adjustments such as the dog and monkey.
For the dog you can have it help you dig up the chests and also help you fight the skeletons and for the monkey just releasing them and allowing them to collect treasure for you would be a little bit overpowered as players can just let them be and have a decent haul within an hour. I was thinking maybe they can help you collect resources

  • @dejectedcolt7 Yeah some of these idea were just on the top of my head when i came up with them. However if this was a real thing that would coming i would imagine i cool down with what the animals could do. Maybe the dog could fight along side you, helping you dig, but i would still like them to sniff out unmarked treasure. It could be a small chance they find one once landing on an island like 10% chance they will find one, and an hour reset for that island so people cant stay on one island letting their pooch find loads of loot. The Releasing of the monkey to find loot would be cool too. However i still like the idea of them getting close to an enemy ship and possibility bringing back something small. Good ideas though!

  • @insanexjok3rx I do agree that abilities are defiantly helpful and just agree with it in general but the dog thing digging up random loot not too sure. I agree on the low percentage chance or if it dug up notes in bottles instead but the recharge time needs to be longer as in like 2 hours or something by that point (hopefully) people would have realised that you can get better loot doing other voyages.

  • @dejectedcolt7 Yeah of course. Longer cool down maybe. I do agree i wouldn't want people to think that a dog would be the best way to get loot. The only intention of a dog digging up extra loot would just be a small bonus. So i agree income should 95% come from voyages, raids, plundering etc.

  • Excerpt from Joe Neate interview at windowscentral.com:

We're going to let people buy pets. We'll treat them in a fun way, they'll be with you on a ship – I'll be able to pick it up and run off with it because they'll be physical objects. I can hold your monkey, or hold your cat and run away with it. If I put it down, it'll come back.

Pets will be our first feature that will allow players to spend additional money. We'll treat it in the right way, and I want to be able to fire pets out of cannons. I'll fight tooth and nail with our design team to get it done. A cat will always land on its feet, of course, because it's a cat … it's just a bit of fun and silliness. If you bought a pet, other people should be able to mess around and use it and experience the joy of it – it should add to the fun social silliness of the game – it's not necessary and won't bring a mechanical benefit.

  • @bo-bilgebottom That's cool. And i know they are only cosmetic and will serve no "mechanical benefit." This was just my idea to if they did give some kinda benefit and help on your journey across the seas.

  • @insanexjok3rx I would however really like to be able to name my pet. Always wanted a monkey called Steven.

  • @bo-bilgebottom Damn i didn't think of naming them! Love it. That would be a nice addition. And should work in their system. Great idea!
