We Need More "Things" To Do On Ships

  • I'm a solo player so this mainly comes from my experiences as a solo player.

I find myself sailing (slowly) into the wind for what feels like most of my voyages. I have two options. Slightly speed up my voyage by tacking into the wind. Or stand there. Tacking is tedious and I'm not even sure it speeds up the journey.

I would love for more little cosmetic things to do on the ship. Let me open and close the hatches. Let me swing around on ropes. Implement some type of solitaire card game in the captain's quarters. Give me more things to arrange and do below deck. Anything other than setting a course and alt-tabbing to entertain myself during the trip.

  • When stuck in a headwind, I set me course, climb into the crow's nest, and use the sleep emote.

I then walk away for a short break.

  • Sailing alone is surely boring especially if you need to head to the other End of the Map, heck even in a Group that can get boring. Something is really needed to pass time. No idea what but SOMETHING is needed.

  • They should implement an e-reader so i can catch up on a book using a read emote.

Or a crystal ball that lets you talk server wide.

or just more random events/hazards that make the long hauls more interesting.

  • I'm going to agree with this from the point of view of someone who primarily plays with full galleon crews. Once you've mastered sailing and have coordinated with your current crewmates, the time spent getting from A to B quickly becomes tedious, as there's only so many times you can serenade each other with the same few shanties or binge-vomit on each other for the luls. The majority of the fun comes from outside the game by talking to your friends (usually about things having nothing to do with the game), and when you're with a crew of competent strangers there's often dead silence when there's no tasks at hand to be discussed. Adding little games and distractions on board would be really nice.

Do you see this, Rare? This is not good gameplay. I know it's realistic to be bored at sea for those long voyages, but we're playing a game here.

  • @ragecagez

I dare to say real pirate weren't that bored, they surely had some games to play

  • Being able to sit on the chair in the captains quarters. That's what i wanna see.

  • @ragecagez I don't really know what they could add for solo players, but personally I'd love dice/card games for crews to pass time. Would be a lot of fun imo.

  • @ragecagez I'm sure this wouldn't be popular, but I'd like to see more realistic sailing physics. That would give us something to do anyway. Right now you simply set the boat in a direction and that's it... unless a storm comes in. I'd actually like to have drift, have the wind actually push on the boat. But that's just me :)

  • @ragecagez I was thinking the same things.
what about playing dices with crewmates on the dock of the ship, like a mini-game??

I would say have a solitaire game on the sloop and have a game of liar's dice on the galleon.

  • Heading upwind? I do this.

"Beating is the procedure by which a ship moves on a zig-zag course to make progress directly into the wind (upwind). No sailing vessel can move directly upwind (though that may be the desired direction). Beating allows the vessel to advance indirectly upwind."

Granted I have no idea if this is actually faster with SoA sailing physics, but it sure feels faster and keeps me engaged.

I've read somewhere that this actually does work, though to what degree I'm not certain.

As for the OP, I posted earlier in a similar thread, and feel my suggestion, as well as others there, could be beneficial.
