Ghost/Skeleton Ship Raid

  • I posted this in response to an AI ship thread and thought i start it in its own topic

One npc ship as a special encounter

    Phase 1: board the ship!
There are 2 ways to do this, firstly sail along side their ship and jump across to the ladder, all the while taking fire from cannons, secondly fire yourself from a cannon.
The aim is to drop the anchor of the ship while fighting the skeletons on deck, once all have been defeated and the anchor has been dropped...

    Phase 2: clear the ship!
The entrance to the gun deck opens, you head down and finally put an end to the barrage of cannon fire from the ship, unless your crew positioned your ship safely behind theirs to avoid having to constantly repair.

    Phase 3: Captain & Officers
Once the gun deck is cleared you return to the deck, the captains cabin opens and you get to fight the Captain and 2-4 Officers.
Officers drop skulls when defeated while the Captain drops the key to the hold, but be quick once the Captain is dead the ship will start to break apart and sink.

The reason for the ship sinking has a few reasons:
Lore - without the Captain and the cursed crew the ship is no longer bound to sail.
Coop - a single crew will never be able to get all the loot from the hold in time, so 2 or 3 crews joining together will be needed to empty it, a single crew would target the most expensive items.

PvP - well you've just finished blowing away skeletons with your new friends, well frenemies...well the guys who took the cursed crew chest that was rightfully ours, MAN THE CANNONS!!!

  • @dumahmorton love this! Posted something similar earlier

  • @dumahmorton I think this is a great concept! I would love to see some sort of timed event almost like the skeleton forts where the flying dutchman or the ferry of the damned shoots out from the water and cloud of fog follows it around.

  • Look at my post too. Check my profile and look at the post named "Rare, what are your thoutghs???"

  • I like the idea of a ghost ship event, however I imagine it as drifting at the center of a raging storm on a dark night, packed with treasures but also the undying captain and crew who once sailed her. The objective would be to brave the storm and hold your course alongside the ghostly vessel while your boarding crew fights through waves of respawning skeletons to search the ship top to bottom for treasures and extract them onto your ship before you're overwhelmed as your bananas and bullets run low. You'd also have other crews to deal with at the same time, adding another layer of complexity. It would differ from the skull fort, which is more of a winner-take-all event and more a grab-what-you-can before disaster befalls you.

  • @dumahmorton I like it but I'd change the phase structure a little bit.

    1. Disable the ship through Ship to Ship combat.
    2. Board the ship and disable the deck crew.
    3. Take out officers on the deck.
    4. The captain enraged emerges from his cabin and attacks. Same idea as the time limit and the key, I think that's great. I'd also like to say that anything you can't get off the ship in time is lost.

I think it's a really fun idea and so long as the silhouette is distinctly not a player ship and is an uncommon occurrence I'm all for it.

Lore is pretty easy. It's a sunken ship risen by the same dark forces that raise the long dead remains of the soldiers as derelict forts.

    Aesthetics

    • Dark colored rickety ship filled with holes.
    • Masts held up with dark ethereal energy not unlike the ship of the damned.
    • The Skull Ship is surrounded by a large thick fog. Nearly impossible to see if someone else is currently fighting it.
    • The holes in the ship are blocked with the same green ethereal energy that holds up the masts.
    • This energy fades and water pours in after the captain is defeated causing it to sink back to the depths faster and faster.

I should have been clearer in my original post, as i didnt actually state that the treasure would be lost when the cursed ship sank but that was my intention.

Aesthetically you hit the nail on the head for how i was imagining the ship, great Captains think alike or bilge rats rarely differ, or something like that.

  • @dumahmorton Even though they said no NPC ships I think this is worthy of an exception.

  • Music for during the encounter could also be an instrumental version of the 'SoT we sail together' but with the main melody played on bass strings with a pounding drum. Just to give an amazing soundtrack to the fight.
