For what it's worth, I'd like to share my SoT experience yesterday. Just to set things straight, I am by no means complaining/whining/crying (whatever you want to call it) This is just what I observed.
A little background first. I bought the game the first day it came out. I'm of the "older generation" who really does enjoy games that challenge not only your skillset but also challenges your mind with puzzles and/or riddles. (For all those in my general age range and gaming desires....the game of all games just jumps right out.."ZORK.")(you know what I'm talking about)lol But I digress. Played SoT for a few hours just to check it out on release day, knowing all the typical issues were to follow. (After reading all the negative posts in forums, glad I abstained from anything serious) lol Also, during Easter week, I knew the game was going to be flooded....and I will just leave it at that word flooded. So, yesterday was my immersion into the SoT pirate life that "RARE" has such grand expectations for.
Played solo so I knew odds were against me right away. Just wanted to boost my gold a little so that when the "laid back" clan starts,(which looks like soon), I.ll have one or two non stock goodies so I'm not a total noob. The first 4-5 hours were great. I could finish Gold Hoarders quests without worrying about a cannonball whizzing by my head every 2 minutes. Kept the booty on board to one or two "good" chests so that it was no biggie if I did become shark bait. Met two single sloopers also that were cordial when I asked how's it going. (XBOX1 game chat and I have my shipmates at 0 volume and I have other ships at high volume and directional. (so I can chat with them.......and maybe hear them coming) lol THEN THINGS STARTED TO GET INTERESTING. Oh by the way RARE, I do like the new ""bluer" water. Nice touch!
Anyway, so I just finished dropping off some chests and getting my map headings set for the next quest, when I noticed a galleon lurking not too far away. As soon as I took off from the outpost, they turned straight for me. I knew I could outrun them, etc, but no booty on board, so I was in a defensive posture and waited to see what would happen. I said nothing and soon 3 cannonballs were heading toward me.(not very close though...wayyyy short and behind me) I "think" I hit their ship twice before they hit me but all the confusion and trying to shoot and steer the ship AND huge swells...anyway. One of them finally boarded me and knocked me off the helm with a blunderbuss point blank. (not dead but definitely shark bait) lol Then I suddenly hear the guy that shot me say "I knocked the PUNK-A*S off his boat with one shot." Immediately I say very loud and clear over my mic, "hey pal, who you calling a punk-A*S? You don't KNOW me! And how am I a P-A for being a single player, being attacked unprovoked by a larger, more powerful ship/crew? That's like patting yourself on the back and bragging that you killed a bird wen the dumb animal didn't know any better and flew right into your radiator on some desolate highway in the middle of B-F NOWHERE!" Then he blurts out "what, you gonna cry about it now you big pu--y?" I said "no, but if we were in the same room together, I'd teach you some manners and how to respect other people." I got the typical "F-U" and then silence. I heard nothing from his mates. I was going to report him but I just chalked it up to the brain capacity of a donut and the mentality of a piece of wood. (That's fair judgement....right?) lol Anyway, respawned and set sail. A different galleon crew attacked me right away and hit me with a cannon shot and I flew maybe twenty yards off the boat. I was going to say "great shot. Knocked me twenty yards clean off the boat!" (kind of laughing because my pirate was probably flying hands over feet thru the air) But before I could say anything I hear, "yeah, I knocked the PUNK-A*S off his boat with a cannon shot!" OK, my body temp was up about a degree and a half when I said over the mic. "who you calling P-A you P-A?" All I could hear was a faint "oops" and the "click" of silence. At least this guy didn't make moronic statements, etc. Heat of the battle, something slips out...sh-t happens! No harm done. But where else in this day and age can you be called a PUNK-A*S twice in a row within 6 minutes of each other by someone thousands of miles away who has no clue who you are. Back in my day, if you used PUNK and A*S in the same sentence about someone....TO THEIR FACE. A. you better be right. B. because you are going to have to back that sh-t up. C. if you're wrong P and A = a double beat down. And yeah, it's gonna hurt A LOT. lol Anyway, made 10k in gold, (doesn't sound like a lot but turning in 1-2, sometimes 3 chests at a time makes for a lot of sailing miles.) Hey, I got to see the Kracken 4 times...NOTE TO RARE: I THINK YOU NEED TO MAKE THE KRACKEN ACTUALLY REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE TO MAKE IT MORE MENACING! Took the good with the bad. It was cool...................UNTIL.................
Of course the last quest had 3 parts to it. Not a bad haul either...3 captains chests and 2 wayfarer chests I found along the way. The last island would ultimately get me one of each chest. But achieving this goal would prove to be quite a job. So I get to this BIG island with loads of rocks and not much room to maneuver. I'm reading my puzzle and for some reason I look behind me and here comes this sloop with 2 or 3 people at full bore...(came out of no where, but very high island, lots of rocks. Looked from the crow's nest but still easy to hide from view) I had just a split second to say, "hey I'll share a few chests if you don't attack!" Needless to say, that was a waste of breath. Two of them were on me like flies on s--t. It happened so fast I'm not sure if they were male, female, interplanetary aliens..whatever. I'm just guessing but I think they were juviniles, because I could hear them disguising their voices and only saying single words which were impossible to understand. I let this go on 5 respawns.....get this....STILL ON MY SHIP, AT THE SAME ISLAND, WITH THE ONE CHEST THAT I HAD STILL DOWN IN MY HOLD. The 4th and 5th times I said, "seriously??? You have nothing better to do than to keep killing me when I respawn, (and man oh man it was quick too. not knowing where they were.) Trying to get the name was near impossible. Only thing I do remember was a sloop with something red on the sail. It's my own fault for not wanting to end the game with a quest still unfinished. I said "So you bought this game to accomplish nothing? That makes tons of sense!" Then a forced deep voice says "kicking your A*S b***h."
I just started laughing. Well 6th respawn, on my ship, 10+ holes in it, hauling butt and still had the chest. That is, until it went glug, glug. Got my new ship headed over to the island and not 2 minutes I get off my ship, someone is firing at me....can't tell where. Found a spot to hide out with an ammo box inside. A few cannonballs whiz by and sure enough, a red sailed sloop. Anyway this is wayyyyyy too long of an explanation of a gaming experience. More like a 10,000 word term paper on being a pirate gamer in a modern world. (note; modern here is not complementary) LOL The only difference between gamer 1 and gamer 3 is that gamer 3 seemed to have the brain capacity of a donut................................................................................................................................................HOLE! Argh b Grrr!!!! Great game Rare! (sure there are bugs but what game doesn't) A little ironing and boom! Then WOW the potential!!! Sorry if I put anyone to sleep, etc. (by the way: I'm not the type to say things that has the potential of ruining a game for someone by giving out spoilers, etc. or saying island names(pretty obvious tho, huh?) Buying a game then game guides, cheats, U-tube hints. etc. Why waste 60-80 dollars on something that you know how it turns out and was easy to do because you had step by step instructions on how to beat it? See you on the high or low seas. This is just my experience and a few (too many) opinions I may have implied. Please don't get all bent out of shape and start a LOUD, HIGHLY EMOTIONAL, VERBAL DEBATE that may or may not become a global concern. (this is just a game). LOL I see too many 3 word comments n social media and turn into extremely abusive name calling, threats, etc. (If only ZORK was back!!!) LOL
This could have degraded into the Barroom Brawl Tales...(but I didn't let it)
