Much like Chests & Skulls, let us collect and carry flags from enemy ships. Not fussed on the specifics beyond that, I just think there's value in quantifying kills.
Could theoretically sell them, trade them as a currency, tie them to a new faction.
Great idea! Let's take their flags and attach them to our ship like a badge of honor. This would accomplish multiple things. First, it would show others in the world our ship has defeated other players in battle. As a direct result, they might be more wary to approach us or decide to hunt us to avenge fallen friends etc. Also, this would decorate our ship and just look super cool!
Upon death a ship should drop only THEIR ship's flag/insignia and NOT the entire lot from those it captured before sinking. It should act like a tally mark.
Why not tie this flag removal to respawn mechanics? Once the flag is removed the ship with no flag can no longer be spawned on and a self-scuttle timer is automatically initiated where the ship will sink in say X minutes... thus allowing the attackers time to ferry off supplies from ship stores and potential loot... all the while the attacked team, if fully killed off, will respawn back at an island, out of line of sight with a new boat. This flag removal is a way to both reward attackers and protect those attacked from griefing at the same time as serving as a visual indicator.

Love this!
@cappin-ash Exactly! This mechanic could be used throughout the game and serve as a few purposes. I think we're on to something here all. What do you think Rare?! Few birds with one stone?
Capital idea!
I think this would work well for a PvP faction/system of rewards. People have been wanting flags to go along with their ship customization options and I think this would be a perfect way to introduce that! Not only could someone display taken flags as a sort of trophy, but they could also turn them into a PvP vendor for a bounty (a static or randomly generated value based on some kind of formula, perhaps pirate level or ships sunk without sinking) and rep.
Basically make it so that they're definitely worth turning in, and act like loot in a way where if you hang on to too much for too long you risk losing it (thus getting no rep or coin).
Capital idea! Love it matey!
@esoteric-pixie Yup! Capture a bunch during your voyages and decorate your ship and when you hit an outpost turn them in for rep/gold/cosmetic unlocks. I'm still unsure if other ships should be able to grab flags from ships they havent sunken though. I think if you take down a ship you get only that ship's flag... not any others it might have taken itself.

I would agree with that. I think that would go into the amount the flag was worth though. Like "Hey I got this flag from a ship that had sunk 4 ships!" so it would be kind of like 4-5 flag gold value in a single flag. That way you're still getting that value, but can't show off flags from a bunch of ships you didn't actually sink.

This is an excellent idea.
But in my opinion, these flags should just be decorative, you should not be able to sell them as it would encourage players to sink every ship they see in order to make money, thus reducing the ability to meet friendly people. Oh shoot... you do bring up a valuable point.
Either they're cosmetic only... which i'm COMPLETELY ok with as i think the respawn mechanic makes half the compelling argument for the entire idea... or there would have to be some risk reward thing then where if you had these flags equipped on your ship (only way to hold/store them until an outpost) you become extremely visible.
Maybe after X flags you can be seen through fog... maybe after XX flags atached you alway have your lights on but they're brighter and that blue ghostly flame color... maybe at XXX flags everyone on the map can start to see you from a distance where it's an in-the-sky icon like a skullfort skull... something floating above your ship so people know to stay the heck away from you... OR come and attack you... maybe for a large reward?!
You then yourself become a server "event" where pirates will team up to take you down and get some sort of larger loot reward possibly?

Indeed, that kind of "server event" thing is really interesting.
Or another solution would be:
You can't sell the flags you capture. But, once you captured like 10 flags from other ships the game gives you the ability to become a "server event", like a quest to vote for, and that quest would be to go to every outpost on the map to sell one flag at a time. And during all that time, you have something like a huge floating flag above your ship that is visible for every player on the server.

In either scenario there would need to be a strong enough risk to the reward so that the entire server didn't just devolve into a PvP only arena. I'm sure Rare could take this broad stroke and focus it down into a vastly improved respwan mechanic and bounty mechanic.
@maximus1978 Oh i'm so with ya. Each flag should be unique with some insignia and the ship name whenever that eventually comes. Some designer or unlockable system keeping the kids safe (no d***s on flags).
It would be cool to even have them permanently saved so you could then view each trophy. Maybe you'd enter your ship's captain's quarters and a rusty locker would be there in the corner (Davy's Locker wink wink) and you'd interact with it to bring up your records of sunken ships so you could then view each ship you've sunk. Could browse by ship's flags... highlight a flag and it would pull up info like: what the ship looked like (cosmetics), how many crew, how much damage taken, time from first damage to flag taken etc. Could make it a big portion of the game Rare!
@thecanisdirus The idea that they came up with on their twitter page was that you can collect the ships you have sunk in class bottles to go within the captains quarters of your ship.
Think of the scene from Pirates of the Caribbean on stranger tides when Blackbeard has all of the ships he has captured within bottles like the Black Pearl.
@nekkrode If they roped in the respawn mechanic we've been brainstorming id be down with that as well! Neat idea but your captains quarters would HAVE to have a nice big multi-level shelf to store 10+ neatly at a time... my OCD would drive me nuts lol.
