5 Tricks to minimize frustration (from a PvP player)

  • Hi! Maybe we've met on the high seas, and maybe not, but there's a good chance if we do I'll probably try to sink you -- but here's the thing, I actually care about your experience in this game. I want to have fun, but I also want you to have fun, too. So here's some tricks / tips to help minimize your frustration with people like me.

    1. If you're playing solo, don't hold on to tons of loot. Play safe; Sea of Thieves is a marathon, not a sprint, so every piece of loot that makes it from your mission to the outpost is getting you just that much closer to a Pirate Legend! Don't get greedy. Also, as a corollary, if you're in a team that isn't confidant with their PvP ability, limit your outings to just a few locations before you return to an outpost. In other words: Don't get greedy!

    2. If you're sunk by a particularly annoying band of pirates, simply log out with your party and log right back in -- Sea of Thieves is a server-based game which just a few ships per server, so the chance that you'll encounter those guys again is low if you do this.

    3. When Raids pop up (the floating skulls in the sky) use them as a cover to get your PvE stuff done. Most of the galleons on the map will want their stab at that loot, and so they won't care about what you're doing. It may seem like it's not safe when a raid is about, but most people will pass you right by.

    4. Understand when you've lost. If you're spawning only to die again shortly after, there's a good chance the players are actively trying get you to scuttle (there are actually good reasons for this -- they may no longer have any cannon balls and actually be unable to sink you through normal means).

    5. People can be mean-spirited. Try and avoid the in-game voice chat by selecting mute other crews; some people are cool, but others aren't, and there's no reasons you should subject yourself to their taunts unless you want to.

As someone who loves the PvP in this game, I want to encourage all players who consider themselves strict PvE players to give it more of a try. Being able to take down other ships is a skill, and you won't learn it by not playing aggressively. You may not want to always do it, but by engaging with the other aspects of the game you can learn how best to harass your harassers, turning you into an even better pirate. Unlike most games, there's no reason to not try crazy tactics; as long as you aren't holding onto tons of loot, you should be willing to try any number of crazy things, like shooting yourself out of a cannon to board and drop a teams anchor (they hate that! ;))

In the future I am sure Rare will implement ways to help you enjoy the game more, but they are unlikely to ever make the seas a truly safe place. Take matters into your own hands and through risk-mitigation and experience with the PvP, you can make your voyages safer and more fun for yourself and those who play with you. Happy sailing.

  • Great advice!

I'd suggest always being wary of your surroundings too. Keep checking for other ships from your crow's nest. I'd also suggest looking for ships whilst you are on an island.

By making a habit of this, you'll very rarely get snuck up on and can escape when you see another ship heading towards you.

I've not been caught with my pants down in ages! Stress free soloing is key!

  • Good tips matey!

I second @Porkin5 's advice, awareness is a key skill. You can never be too paranoid in this game.

On a particularly piratey moment, I sailed in a straight line to a ship on the horizon, maybe took a few minutes to reach them and the whole journey there I was thinking, "Why haven't you spotted me?".

  • My top crazy tactics & also what I saw other players do and thought it was outside the box and good :-

    1. If on a sloop half mast it round an outpost get your mate to jump off to hand in chests or if solo stick it in a full lock and do the same watch as they chase your boat and laugh.

    2. As you said I return after every quest.

    3. Stock up on gunpowder barrels and return the favour on the crew that harassed you , I barrel below water line creates about 5 insta holes and can easily sink the galleon.

    4. On a particularly long mission pick a point with a friend on the island to stash the loot a cave or bush then if your sunk return to get the hidden stash.

    5. always leave one s****y chest or skull on view , most players see it and do a grab and dash .

    6. Sail round a storm using it as cover from view.

    7. on a sloop get close into the sandbanks , I have sunk many galleons by letting them run aground then doing a sharp handbrake going back and sorting them out whilst they are repairing.

    8. One bloke I saw scuttled his ship then hid on the island and tried to mug us handing in chests , great move

Yep I have not been caught since day one playing and I have had some right conniving Thieves try.
-Keep your head on a swivel. Get in the crows nest at least once between short trips.
-Don’t lose track of time on an Island, check your surrounding for ships coming in.
-Always position the boat so that it is in position to drop the sails and leave at maximum knots.

    • BOO! Look behind you!
-Hand in your loot after every voyage. Dont lose it all to other players, storm, Kraken or even a server issue.
  • Great tips so far, everyone. I've seen some pretty amazing Sloopers out there who evaded my team quite a few times, and they do so by taking advantage of every tool they have -- not by being the best shot, or what-have-you. Sea of Thieves is first and foremost a game about great strategy; if you aren't great at PvP, or don't like fighting other ships, this game has a lot of options for you, but you need to know they exist or you'll get stuck.

Make it a point to learn the tools available to you, whether in the game itself, or in a menu, to make your experience the best it can be.

And one other important tip: Whatever happens, stay positive. In a game where the worst thing that can happen to you is coming in and leaving with nothing but the experience you had, any chest you get is simply a bonus. If you can play an entire day of this game and earn nothing but have had a blast, then you definitely know you're playing the right game for you!

  • Another couple of tips I would like to add:

    • When at an island park your ship towards the wind or an advantageous exit and hit the anchor, raise the sails, then raise the anchor. This will keep your ship in place, and make for a speedy exit that only requires you to drop sails to move.

    • When being chased I've lost a number of pursuers by pretending I haven't seen them, heading to an outpost from the direction opposite to its main pier, then breaking line of sight and continuing on to another outpost. A number of times they have been fooled and try beat you to the NPC's to find you aren't there. Breaking line of sight in general is a good strategy.

  • I get more nervous when I see other sloops as a solo sloop captain. Galleons are easy to get away from.

Rule #1 to Sea of Thieves.. Never trust anyone, even the ones that seem friendly. I never fire first, but I trust no one.
