Guns don't work underwater

  • So why do they in this game?

(For some reason even though I swear I hit REPLY, the forum decided to EDIT my original post instead)

Yes, I do. Because the sailing is (semi)realistic and little else about the game other than the existence of undead is entirely unbelieveable.

I was in fact killing skeletons when I heard cannonfire, and deciding that it was a lost cause I tried swimming over to the other ship and the other guy jumped in the water and shot me.

I guess yon posters are not familiar with the concept of "suspension of disbelief" in video games. Fantastical things can exist in video games that otherwise obey laws of physics and other real life elements, as long as they make logical sense in context. i.e. I can bleed and die, ships require wind to sail, cannons must be loaded and fired in an arc, I can carry limited firepower, and in fact can't do anything else when carrying large/heavy objects, so one would expect guns to behave relatively realistically.

    in this game?

    You answered your own question.

  • @tahngarthor Because it is a game and the creators decided it was possible. There are walking skeletons and you find it weird guns fire underwater?

  • Because sharks

  • So that it gives you something to do to defend yourself. Besides this is a made up fantasy world where skeleton's rise from the dead to protect treasure, magic dealers want the heads of dead captains, the Kraken Exists, and the Legendary Pirates are ghosts of their former selves.

Basically, it is a game, who cares if the guns work. Just use them.

  • I hide it between my booty underwater, and shoot fast and hide it again to keep it dry.

  • @helena-nilfhelm I just fire from within my butt, why risk water damage you know ?

  • @helena-nilfhelm ARRRRRRR The Booty Hole...It holds a lot more once you get yer barrel in there! har har har har har

  • Was an easy way out for the devs.

  • To me it feels like the guns just have a reduced range under water.
You have to get very close for the blunderbuss to do anything but tickle someone.
The pistol is your underwater friend.

  • Now that you mention it.... I have never seen a sword fight underwater, hmmm.... maybe we should do away with underwater swords too.

  • Seriously, the guns are the least of your problems. Seen the Gold hoarders face?

Don't be silly, Sword don't work underwater! :)
^ This is a, how did Spock put it "A story with a humorous climax " twas a wee pirate joke! :P

  • @txspadez13

There is no reason why a sword wouldn't work underwater.

It would be less effective because of the resistance/pressure of the water, but you most definitely can still cut things with sharp objects underwater. Firing guns (that clearly aren't air/pressurized gas rifles) does not work at all with ball+gunpowder ammo, and very poorly with modern ammunition.

  • @tahngarthor
    l**o dude it was a joke. :D

  • Actually it was an honest response. Thrusting a sword underwater would not be very likely... and swinging a sword underwater to defend yourself from a shark would be highly ineffective. This why most divers, including pirates in the 1800's had "diving knives".... A cutlass just wouldn't cut it. Heh pun intended...

A sword would be clumsy underwater because of its size. But not technically non functional. As you said, knives work. Swords work, just not as well. Too much water displacement.

Ball-and-powder weapons would be 100% non functional in water. You would do better to use it as a melee weapon.

  • But you are ok with eating oxygen infused bananas to stay underwater?

  • @tahngarthor Have you ever tried to punch someone underwater? Do you know what kind of force that would take? Especially if you don't have a pool floor to support you trying to swing. You are not going to hurt anyone. Your argument is ridiculous and your basis of theory doesn't hold up. Try again once you have tested your theories, then come up with a better concept for a solution.

Complaining just to complain is not helpful. Thanks!

    guns DO work underwater.
not as effective, but low-speed rounds work just fine underwater. Mythbusters showed that 9mm pistols fired a bulet well into balistics gel from some 15-20 feet away underwater. And yes, this is a game.

  • Swordfighting underwater

  • @sir-rhavi
I heard some ninja can slice people underwater just like normal.

  • Swordfighting Underwater 2....

  • @txspadez13 OMG What have I done!

Complaining about other people complaining is even less helpful. Thanks!

You can use edged weapons underwater. You will not be winding up for big swings with them, but rather cutting up close. It can be done, and as another poster mentioned, smaller knives were often carried for use under water.

The point is, edged weapons are not rendered entirely nonfunctional underwater, but firearms are. The gun should literally not work underwater at all. Edged weapons should be less effective, but not nonfunctional.

  • while i would argue that this is a game, i do think that if guns were disabled underwater, it would make sharks much more threatening and the sea much more scary.

  • @Tahngarthor I am sorry, just pointing out your logic is flawed. And even gave you a solution to your underwater combat issue by suggesting that only daggers or knives be used underwater.

As it should be. I mean really, have you ever seen someone shoot a shark underwater with an ordinary gun?

There are specialized weapons for such purposes, but they didn't exist in the Age of Piracy.

  • @tahngarthor I agree with OP, this is a little ridiculous. The guns should not work underwater, you should have to use a sword and with a thrusting motion. Being sniped under water from 100 meters away is pretty lame.

My logic isn't flawed. And having said that, I already agree that only cutting weapons should be functional in water.

I'm even okay with using guns at the surface (even though your gun is wet and probably wouldn't fire if the game were completely realistic). But underwater, no way a flintlock pistol or other similar gun should work.

  • @willy-pordobel The Can of Worms... it's been opened! LOL

i agree with your argument because it would be a good quality change, not because of logic or anything like that. basically, it is best if logic is not used as a leading argument.

  • Next thing you know they will be asking for a more realistic death too. Come on guys it's a game!

Actually permadeath would be cool as an OPTIONAL mode. Just because the only continuity between sessions is the vanity items you've bought, perhaps for this game, it would be "die once and your session is over." But, like I said, as an OPTION.

Lots of "Games" have permadeath options.

  • @tahngarthor look my friend, I'm gonna throw out an idea that might make the shooting under water thing a bit easier to stomach. Now imagine that in this world with the walking skeletons who have unlimited ammo, with people who can squeeze into cannons barely big enough to hold their spleen, and with snakes that can survive 3 heads hots from a musket rifle.... there may be some magic involved. Yes, flintlocks, muskets, and the like wouldn't really work under waterm due to exposed gunpowder... which doesn't work when wet. Do you ever see your pirate pour this gunpower? Nope, I've personally fired hundreds of shots in this game wit not one ounce of powderived making it into my gun. The only explanation is that our guns are magical, using a special mermaid powder (waterproof of course) to allow your weapon to fire underwater, now you can go back to that game and not be so superseded that the weapon fires underwater
