Why do pigs die of starvation?

  • It might be the single worst mechanic in the game. Snakes don't die if you don't feed them, chickens don't die if you don't feed them, but if you have a quest to go pick up 2 or 3 pigs, they're gonna die before you can find the third. If you take more than a couple minutes to get back to your ship after setting a pig down, it's going to be gone by the time you get back. Or even better, you get into a tussle on the way to the outpost to turn in your pigs and you don't have the time to run down and feed the pigs from your already small stash of healing items, or you die from a cannon shot.

Can you PLEASE remove the need to feed the pigs? Leveling the merchant alliance is already the worst part of this game, the pigs dying without even making any noise to let us know they're hungry just makes it worse.

  • Because chickens and snakes don't eat bananas. I solved the mystery!

  • @oneeyed-w1lliam Lol

  • They need to at least increase the time of when they need to be feed again

  • @arampagingtire It is pretty annoying having to manage your pigs whilst looking for other items on islands. I've lost a few because I've been "exploring" a little too long.

FYI - pigs begin to cry when they're hungry. It's quite distinct.

  • Yeah, its a very annoying mechanic, especially with black and gold pigs. I'd settle for an increased starvation timer to give you a chance to come back to your ship to feed them.

I'd settle for it but I'd like to see it gone.

  • @gigglesnarf I can't see why this is a mechanic at all. Why not have some form of mechanic that makes you pet the chicken or something with the snakes? I hate having to feed the pigs. If you go to any sort of large island to get the pigs there's a 90% chance you'll lose a pig or 2 just because of this starvation BS.

Also, I can never tell the difference between the pigs squealing for food and squealing just because they're noisy as hell, just like the chickens.

They do give us warning before dying. They start to cry an a very distinct manner.

  • I agree, snakes and chickens should require food as well. Maybe do wooden planks for chickens and cannonballs for snakes.

  • I thought it was upset because it needed a bath... but alas the poor thing drowned.
Ah well, plenty more where he came from and the crew now has Salt Water Bacon!
    Win-Win really.

  • @arampagingtire definitely not the worst mechanic in the game but should be looked at.

In my opinion the worst mechanic in the game is a pirate game where the pirates never open a treasure chest.

  • Never lost a pig because I pay attention, but I'd rather not have to do it. Takes 8-10 minutes for it to sit down and make that god awful squeeling noise, then 1-2 minutes before it dies. Time your runs better for the time being if you don't want to lose them

Honestly there should be no mechanic for any of them having to eat.

True, that title is saved for everything about respawning

  • I think the animals have different tiers of difficulty, the chicken are the simplest.
Then you have the pigs you must feed and the snake you need to not come to much closer without playing music or they will spit on you.

So I think it's ok, anyway I've noticed that the pig need a medium-long time to die for stravation, so isn't to hard, the important is listening their squeels and if they are laying on their belly.

Just feed them before you go back on the island and at your return they'll be still alive. With me works.

  • Well pigs a greedy little S***s. Also they do make a clear screaming noise when they are hungry and keeping them fed is not difficult. :)

  • Please, keep quiet...or they will add wheat and mouses!!!!!

  • @hruodbhertsasha Not only does feeding the pigs not guarantee that they will be alive by the time you get back because the timer is seemingly random, but sometimes you don't have the luck to make it back in 5-10 minutes while you look for a freaking gold pig that just won't spawn.

Also, needing to feed 3 or more pigs means that you have to spend your already limited number of healing items to keep them alive, yet there's no need to feed the chickens or snakes anything to keep them alive.

  • @arampagingtire ha detto in Why do pigs die of starvation?:

Never got this kind of problems, as usual I find all the pigs in the same area.

Today for example, I've made a contract with 2 pigs and 3 snake, I've consumed just 5 bananas for keeping them alive and I've easy refilled them at the outpost.

But in general, I agree that it is annoying that you have to feed them

  • I've only dealt with pigs once but I didn't see an issue when I did. I was in a galleon so I'm unsure if they were being fed by others but they seemed fine throughout. I did have a moment where they were starving but that seemed to go on over 5 mins. Only time I lost some was to a snake someone our next to them.

Personally I like it. It makes sense to feed them and gives people stuff to do other than play music whilst the captain gets you between islands. Obviously as a solo it's harder but that's kind of the point in doing solo anyway

  • ...Because you're a cruel meanie that doesn't feed your pigs, apparently!

  • It's the worst mechanic in the game and needs to be removed.

  • I don't like it much, mainly because I get sad if an animal dies. It also becomes a royal pain in the proverbial if you get sidetracked or have to avoid your destination for some reason.*

*Basically, other players who's intentions are otherwise unknown, but unlikely to be friendly.

  • It does feel a bit enticing. One bites unless mesmerised, one requires food or they die, but what do the chickens need? What's the puzzle there?

Maybe the death is too much, but in case this is removed, what would the replacement puzzle be?

I think the voyages should meet the competence of the character and the size of the crew. When the character or the crew changes, the voyage generator is affected too.

  • @arampagingtire Although I agree with your post, pigs not only oink differently for food they also sit when hungry.
This is fine for a crew of 4 where someone can always keep an eye on the pig(s) but unfortunately a crew of 4 is not always the case.

  • I feed the pigs and they still die not long after they ate ?? I lost 4 in one voyage now I refuse to ship them now

  • Its supposed to be a challenge just because it makes it harder does not mean it should not be there. This does not need changing you need to work out how to meet the challenge.

  • And don't store the snakes near any of the other animals... I learned that one the hard way :(

  • @arampagingtire no, this can stay in the game, makes it not that easy

  • @shofficer https://i.imgur.com/9KCIeJi.gif

  • I enjoy the fact that each thing to deliver have different interaction with it.
    Snake, Pigs....
Why not chicken ? Is the first thing you take in the game, it allow for newbish to get into the game easly.

  • @arampagingtire said in Why do pigs die of starvation?:

the pigs dying without even making any noise to let us know they're hungry just makes it worse.

The pigs start to squeel and sit with their noses up when they're hungry. Turn off your Justin Bieber and listen to the game perhaps?

  • @arampagingtire They do make noises when they are hungry, just feed them. None of my pigs died during a quest, don't know how do you manage to starve them to death, the noise they make is so annoying as well
