gun powder barrel

so, when someone takes a gun powder barrel onto my sloop and blow it up below, i always die, no matter where i am. even if i am just outside of the sloop not even touching it. when i do the same on a galleon. no body dies, i even blew a barrel up when someone was on the same deck level as me but i was the only one i saw at the ferry of the damned. what gives?
