How to show friendly intentions

  • Alrighty m80‘s!
Everybody is trying to figure out how we are able to show our intentions, when encountering another ship.
    Here are my suggestions:

    1. Raise the cannons all the way up.
Easily visible and it takes some time to lower the cannons, so there is ample time
to change heading and make a run for it.
Edit: This seems to be out of question for many Pirates around here, but i still think it is a clear sign and easily visible for everybody.

    2. Shine a light. Either using somewhat of a morse code with your lantern or turning only one light of your ship on.

    3. The Wink-Emoji

What i want to say is that there are plenty of ways to communicate good intentions non verbaly without implementing flags or anything into the game. We (the lasting community) just have to commit on one way of doing it.

  • @power-hansen or just stay away from other people.

  • @power-hansen Ahoy! I usually play on Xbox and I either do the emotes like 'Wave' and 'Make Friends'. Also, if I'm close enough I might try to talk to them with game chat.

  • On my sloop, I will turn the helmsman lantern off and on 4 times. Then when close enough, do a pirate wave or send the ahoy message. If they still seem hostile.... Well, my cannons are always loaded.

  • @bane-1gdt That is of course a valid way to do it. But since this is a topic here on the forums and think people really want to interact but don‘t trust anybody anymore.

  • @oneeyed-w1lliam That‘s what i‘m talking about! Nice one.
Now we only have to get everybody on the same page.

  • @offsidepage Talking to one another is the easiest way and was used in the beta a lot. In the final game not so much unfortunately.

  • @power-hansen that's the thing lifting cannons up is a no go, because I've noticed even when flashing a light or using a emote people just can't be trusted. Really there is no point trying to be friend players that are not in your crew simply because if it comes down to gold or friend they pick gold eveytime.

  • @bane-1gdt I think that, with a lot of people hopping on to SoT simply because it’s a new thing, this sort of behaviour is inevitable.
Many of these players will leave and i think a small, dedicated player base will remain. I‘m somewhat adressing my suggestions to this dedicated group.

Ofcourse having a mic makes things a bit easier conversation wise, lol

  • @oneeyed-w1lliam Not being a trolling, greedy a**hole makes it even more easier.

  • I’ve found that light flashes and the wave emoji work particularly with sloops ( I solo sloop myself ) but galleons.....forget it

  • @power-hansen None of those work. I am currently on a mission to never shoot others. Do you think a single player reacts to raised cannons or me not wearing weapons? They all just want to destroy my ship when I get close, I even chat to them about my intentions. The player base is toxic, you can't change it.

  • @power-hansen When the Legendary Captain update finally arrives (In about 3 months), those types of players should hopefully get bored with the game.

  • @ick3y-uk I‘m also solo slooping most of the time and i‘ve always avoided Galleons anyways. To be fair, i‘m avoiding nearly everybody. :D

  • @offsidepage They are bored already but miraculously keep posting about how bad the game is and how hard it is to reach legendary status.
    Can‘t be that bad then.

  • True I too avoid when on mission but some of the best experiences I’ve had has been teaming up with other sloops at skelly forts, teamed up with one the other day and even gave him a ride back to an outpost with the loot, it was a tense ride but we were both honourable

  • I do the cannons up thing a lot, I try telling people in game as well.

This is pointless .. every other player just wants to kill you on sight,
got chased by a galleon again today. I had no loot, I slowed, told them, got killed.
spawned, they found me, killed again.
so I changed servers ? just more of the same.
so no your idea of showing you are not a threat has no place in this game in its current state.
    sorry :)

  • @power-hansen SoT breaks through the mold. it's a game thats not like the other games. People are used to games that cost alot of money and micro transactions etc. So alot of players also hate this game because it's not like the others.

  • @offsidepage

    your statement is incorrect..

Fortunately outrunning a galleon is super easy just turned into the wind and wait for him to give up.

  • @willy-pordobel
We shall not give in! Ultimately the good will prevail!

    Let me quote JFK here:
„We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained, and new rights to be won, and they must be won and used for the progress of all people.“

    ONWARDS TO VICTORY M80‘s!

  • Imo they should add a large black flag, larger for galleon, ideally customizable by player(s), with more options for the galleon.

By default the black flag would be high up, showing up you're up to anything thus would fight for your loot/life, lowering the black flag could mean you'd be open to discussion or to surrender your ship, if you want to give up the fight.

Of course players could still trick others into a trap by lowering their black flag but shot a volley of canon balls when in good position anyway. Hence putting canons in the highest angle would help showing good will.

  • @meurtrisseur Good idea! My intention however is to use a method that we can use with the tools available right now.
I‘m also searching for something that can easily be written down in the pirate codex, something like „Cannons high - Good guy. Cannons low - No go!“ or something. :D

Every single player you have ever met in SOT has tried to kill you? Ouch. Unlucky. Unlucky indeed!

    Good Idea!!

  • @power-hansen "Cannons raised unto the sky? - a request for parley ye dost spy." ? dost?doth?douthe? my "ye olde english" probably needs some work.

  • At distance ill use the light flashy thing. As you get closer guns are loaded and directed. When real close ill issue verbal warning and evasive action to avoid the inevitable bomb swimmer. Intentions fairly clear by then.

  • Sometimes I log in to do PvE content, other times I log in to do PvP content. When I'm after PvP content I'm not after loot, because you hardly ever get it, I'm just there to have an interesting fight. Unfortunately I don't tend to watch out for secret signals when doing the PvP.

At the same time I don't expect people to not attack me when I'm doing PvE. I'm all for people attempting parley or friendly communication, but a lot of the time I'm just in the game for the gameplay that involves killing someone else, and considering there's only 6 ships on the entire server, I'm not usually willing to pass up an opportunity when I finally find someone.

  • There's actually a really good post here with a nice set of Rules of Engagement, I think they should really be pinned somewhere. https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/46426/revised-rules-of-engagement-for-the-open-seas

  • I generally raise my cannons or just avoid them at all costs.

There was a couple times I've exchanged light flashes with people too, that was pretty cool lol.

  • Cannons raised, flash the lantern. Seems to be the international sign of peaceful intent. We can all agree on that like we can all agree none have to honor that sign and can remain openly hostile towards the peaceful ship.

I like many others would rather our intent be known in advance. I operate under the rules of engagement, don't fire unless fired upon. My cannons are loaded of course and I'm ready for a fight but I don't seek it out.

  • Flash a lantern, play a shanty, have your tankard out. "Ahoy", wave emoji, make friends emoji. There are plenty of ways to show others you are friendly, so I agree we do not need anything added to the game to show good intentions.

No chance I am raising my cannons though, that's just asking for trouble. That would be like wrapping yourself in meat and going for a swim with sharks.

  • @santach
“Thine cannonth raisest towards the sky - no harm shall come from thy”
“Cannonth pointing yonder - Matey, it’s time to plunder.”
