White Knights Get Off Your High Horses

  • There are no more cosmetics I'm interested in purchasing. I'm almost rank 30 with all factions and the quests are now boring as hell. I still enjoy the combat, but I'm betting most of you don't want me to dedicate my 30+ hours a week in-game to blowing you out of the water. There is no reason for me to get treasure. None. Just sinking and slaughtering everyone is my enjoyment and reason for playing.

I won't stop having fun because it upsets some people. There is no compromise. It's up to the developers to give me a reason to stop killing everyone on sight. If there were a reason for me to hunt treasure, I would.

I love the world of SoT. It's beautiful, immersive, engaging, and complex enough to be trying at times, but still fun overall. The mechanics and base game are great. The quests get boring rapidly. Adding more variety in the quests, NPCs, and treasure hunting would be great, but it won't solve the gameplay loop. Eventually you will be able to buy everything.

There are various ways to solve this. Gold sinks are one way to do it. Buying consumables is another. Developers constantly releasing new cosmetics is a third possibility. I mentioned my personal idea earlier. Be it through loss and regain or acquiring new stuff they all boil down to some form of progression.

I'm fine with horizontal progression. I love that only skill divides the winner and the loser. Give me some damn horizontal progression then. Cosmetics earned through PvP. Ship cabin decorations or trophies. Changing the cargo models in the hull based on how many of which items you've turned in during the session. Unique hats or peg legs that drop when you die for the victor to pick up. Rare, you gave us the tools, now give us the content to play with using those tools.

TL:DR No longevity. Broken gameplay loop. All that's left is PvP. Needs content / progression. Gave suggestions.

  • What white knights? Literally everyone on this forum is complaining about something.

  • If you had gear with stats to work towards, then the only one's dying would be the one's who never stopped PvPing in the first place. But for some reason none of the white knights want stats. So happy greifing!

  • @ersatz-nihilist There are plenty of threads like this too.

    Don't believe you.

  • @ich-bin-whitey Glad to see you didn't read any of my suggestions.

  • You're still missing the ultimate cosmetic, a legendary ship.

If you don't want that one, I guess wait a few months until time next DLC

  • I still think there is no excuse for just aimlessly killing people not even looking for loot- I agree with the main point.

The game needs at least more to work for and especially new activities/quests asap to keep people engaged.

I am working towards Pirate Legend fearing that literally all I’m gonna get is the d*****s title and little/nothing else.

  • @quixoticfolly No. That was TL;DR by far. Kept my attention for a couple sentences though.

  • @ich-bin-whitey Then don't attribute c**p to me that I didn't say. I don't want gear stats or vertical progression.

The "white knights" he's referring to are the ones saying that SoT has a HUGE amount of if one simply finds it. OP is saying that the current content is shallow and repetitive ergo the only excitement is from PVP

  • @quixoticfolly "You" was being generalized in my post, tough guy.

  • @quixoticfolly those poor real life pirates centuries ago probably complained about the same things.

  • @picklebeard22 They had p*********s to spend their gold on. While my buddies on Teamspeak and I think that turning the second floor of the outpost inns into a brothel is a great plan, I doubt Rare would be on board.

Out of sheer curiosity, aside from the fetch quests (that slow down leveling up dramatically for some reason around 25), one raid, one kraken. What else is there? Because if im missing anything I would really love to know. The music and drink is fun for the first few hours then im usually told my most crews not to play because they are sick of hearing it lol.

because with no stats, new players can jump in the game and not immediately be stomped by every player with better gear until they uninstall

  • As far as I know no one in the mid to upper tier is happy. Progress within the guilds crawls to a near stop after rep 20. More gold than options to spend it on and like you said the quests really are all the same so it gets beyond grindy. But the next big update is three months away. So everyone who is already bored is pretty much stuck waiting for new stuff to buy.

I'm not to that point yet but give it a week and I'll be right there with you, more gold than I can carry and all the cosmetics I want. I get why there isn't a vertical progression system but they really should have thrown in more stuff for us to spend gold on for launch. More weapon types, magic weapons, more ship stuff.

The progression within guilds shouldn't have slowed either. Higher level quests should offer higher level Castaway, Seafarer, Marauder and Captain chests that pay out more gold and give more rep to lower level pirates who turn them in while a normal rate to pirates who are at that level. That way there's more of a bonus to helping friends who are new to the game, they'll get more rep and loot.

  • Very much agree that we need more variety in cosmetics, nothing that I want to spend my gold on atm, ive only spent gold on the order of souls lantern so that I could be the police

  • amazing how you lasted until level 30. I got to 12 but that's mostly from robbing people. It starts to get boring as well.

  • @captain-surgee I really do love the feel of the game and have a bunch of friends in my clan to play with. What's really amazing is the amount of time I put in the alpha and beta sessions, but at least those offered new content to test and tons of random players to whip into an efficient crew.

  • Anyone who unironically uses the term "White Knight" should be automatically disbarred from having an opinion.

  • We need more than just cosmetics to sink gold into. We need resources or something that can only be attained via questing and treasures and is capped. Otherwise you can always just stockpile it out, get more gold than you'll ever need or get ahead of progression in some way where you no longer have to participate in the gameplay loop. Simply adding more things to buy, is good, but not that answer to solving this problem.

  • @nihilent I completely agree which is why I keep pushing my idea. Basic ships would still be completely viable, but it gives you a major gold sink and allows a variety of playstyles and expression.

  • @quixoticfolly I got a full crew too. 2 of my friends and my wife. They were all super excited to play. After today they've said they don't think they wanna play it anymore. We raided 2 forts, we sank 3 galleons, 1 sloop, did 2 voyages and had a really awful (not fun, too easy) fight with a Kraken. I already feel tired with it. It's really sad because I was like the biggest fan.

Including complaining about the people complaining! ;p

  • @quixoticfolly I doubt there wil be a brothel as the game is pegi 12 :P but i also wuld want that as it fits the pirate theam.

Isn't it odd that theft and murder are literally the point of the game but sex is still taboo.

Your not supposed to approach this game with content that you chew through sequentially. And most people didn't actually "play" the game, they just farmed treasure chests until they got bored. It would be like picking up capture the flag in halo and both teams ignoring each other just turning in flag after flag and complain they are incredibly bored. You forgot to engage in the aspect that makes this game fun, murdering each other.

  • At its current state, I don’t think a content update in...........June.......... is going to save the game (excluding knights). If they can patch in content, (at this point the addition of a coconut would seem substantial) every few weeks, they might be able to maintain some form of a player base.

  • @quixoticfolly
So more cosmetics should come into the game according to Rare, so at least this should not be a problem over long time.

But you ideas for upgrades and progressions seem to simply don't fit into the game concept.
It was said that SoT will have horizontal progression only, so buying ship upgrades to be better simply makes new players worse equipped, which would frustrate new players a lot.
Just to get this clear: If the game concept would be different, your ideas don't sound bad at all.

But stuff like cosmetics which can be unlocked only by playing PVP a bit (not excessively kill ridiculous numbers of players) sounds good for example, that could be a thing in the future.
On the other hand dropping random loot for players who kill you will most likely cause A LOT of grinding on players which prefer to avoid PVP - that could backfire.

As for the repetitive content: Yes, we will see how Rare adresses this, as there are a bunch of players arguing about this.
For other players random exploring gives enough fun over a long time, so i guess it's up to Rare to set the course.

But honestly if the game bores you right now you could maybe put it away for a while and keep an eye out for interesting updates?

  • @sirliborius Balanced upgrades that leave a basic ship viable in combat are horizontal progression. They only increase variety in combat and playstyles. Also, I think you misunderstood the special cosmetics drops. Yes, they drop when you die, but that includes death by skeleton, shark, drowning, etc. They would also be generated as hidden spawns or quest rewards, so hunting players wouldn't be the only way to get them.

I'm not bored with the killing people. I'll continue sinking ships, but probably only ten or twenty hours a week. I was in the Pioneer program too, so I've already spent literally hundreds of hours exploring the map. I doubt most people will spend that much time though.

  • Rare watch out pvp players lose fun!! welldone continue with the good work :)

  • @gr3y-g0r3 You score zero on reading comprehension. Stay in school.

  • @quixoticfolly I prefer earning money son, relax ;)
