A proper fix for fleeing ships

  • Ever feel screwed by ships who just keep on fleeing for hours and you are unable to catch up because the ships are the same?

Have no fear, I have the solution for this.

A weight system. The more supplies / crates / loot / skulls you have on your ship the heavier you become as a ship, the slower you will become.

This is pretty much a critical implementation because I am getting sick and tired ( and everyone else) if the only way to catch a ship is with it's pants down when it is anchored near a island... Everybody has figured out the the sailing system by now and there is no advantage to be gained once both ships are chasing. Galleons just go with the wind if they are being chased by a sloop, and sloops just sail against the wind when being chased by galleons... GG

  • No need to fix what ain't broke.

  • Learn to sail OP.. and the reason they're running is that they don't want to fight.. Perhaps instead of trying to find a way to force others into your play-style, how about you go find others that want to mix it up?

Seems simpler than asking the devs to add a snowflake mechanic for you.

  • @little-squash

So you think it is great as it is right now? Or is there some valuable knowledge I don't know about yet which should give me the ability to catch up to another ship of the same type.

  • @cptchickenship Fast forward to a game where nobody wants to hunt treasure because it will make them a target AND a sitting duck. I'll pass. Maybe find something else to do than waste hours chasing down ships.

I have an amazing idea too! The second you fire at another player, you pay a 100k starter fee. And your ships sinks. And, you start slowly losing life, forcing you to keep eating bananas, until you die. Also, when dead, new PvP death tax should be put in, another 100k fine, plus there's a 5 hour lock out period before you can leave the ship to come back to life.

I think most of us including you can get behind these much needed changes.

  • @neller2000

You guys are just seriously stupid, guess I am talking with people with no more then a single brain cell.

So this game is about grinding chests and not fight other ships? Alright, cool. guess I brought the wrong game then.

    There Fixed it for you.
Just so you know in those wasted hours chasing someone that didn't want to fight did you know that your probably could have gone and dug up a dozen chests or found a few shipwrecks and probably made 10k gold. But instead 2 crews spent tons of time earning nothing.

Here's an idea for you, If you cant catch them in about 15 mins do something else.

  • @cptchickenship FYI, name calling and insulting people is a good way to get your thread shutdown.

You are right, it's not broken, but it could be better.

  • @cptchickenship I would put my hope on chain-shots with which you can destroy the sails...

  • @lifewcoke

Yeah whatever, I didn't start the flamewar over here, I just came with a normal suggestion and got spit over...

  • @cptchickenship What are you 5? Who cares what a bunch of random people say on the internet. Grow up.

  • Yeah, I find this annoying for sure.

But like most things, it should be solved by adding a layer of complexity to ship combat that has a counter. For example, there is something kind of "missing" from the front of all of our ships, and I'd argue that thing could be like some kind of line-rope you can shoot onto an enemy ship that both slows it down and allows you to "tight rope" walk it, to board the ship.

Of course, the players being pursued should be able to destroy this rope with a couple of sword slashes.

Assuming they have a sword equipped ;)

As it stands right now, the players being chased actually have an advantage, because they drop explosive barrels or their teammates into the ocean to board the pursuing ship and drop the anchor for a quick getaway, or even possibly sink the pursuing vessel. Pursuers need something to even it out, even if just slightly.

  • So this game is about grinding chests and not fight other ships? Alright, cool. guess I brought the wrong game then.

Its about both... but when you chase someone for an hour, you are doing neither. You aren't fighting and you aren't grinding gold.

  • @cptchickenship A fix for fleeing ships? Wow. Newsflash for you....not everyone plays the game the same way as you, or with the same intent. Where do you get this knowledge that "everyone else" feels as you do?

This game has other aspects to it besides the continuous hunting and attacking of other ships. If someone is intent on doing something else, like trying to fulfill a voyage that they have acquired, why should they have to "play" with you? Outrunning other ships in an effort to avoid a fight, which detracts from the mission they are currently intent on completing, is just as much a part of the game.

Having read many, many, posts on this forum, I can certainly tell you that not "everyone else" feels as you do, and by the same token, I can also tell you that not everyone else feels as I do. Play the game your way and let others play their way.

  • Ever feel screwed by ships who just keep on chasing you for yours and they won't give up even though their ships are the same?

How about we don't make it easier and leave it as is, so folks can't get easy kills/sinks/loot off those that have been playing the PvE game.

Game goes both ways and if you want to be a jerk and waste hours of someone else's time then they sure as heck will do everything they can to make sure you don't get rewarded for it.

If you think this game is about fighting other ships you'll be disappointed. You can look up Rares description of the game too, it mostly centers on the PvE, then it mentions added danger of PvP here and there. Good luck getting the game to last at all.

The majority of players don't want to get ganked. What exactly do you think is going to happen when they all finally had enough and leave, taking their fat wallets with them?

This game is not a PVP ship to ship death match game and has never been advertised as one in fact lots of people keep saying this is a PVP game and well thats not wrong but go watch the Rare dev videos or go read the microsoft store page for the game or the box.... Its an open world ADVENTURE game with the risk of ship to ship battles and player vs player fights the PVP is meant to be a small part of the game but ever present the fact is there is so little content right now thats all there is in the game outside the 3 fetch quests....but PVP should never be the focus of the game and should also be second to PVE content.

  • @cptchickenship sail better... they are running for a reason... look atthe map try to plan where they are headed and go there... swing into the wind and hard turn into them when you are closer...there are ways to take their loot... but you cant win them all

  • really? i mean really really? this is just silly, cant believe pvp monkeys (i love sinking ships dont get me wrong and the pvp in this game is good) are moaning just because they cannot catch a ship, so im on a sloop and have say 20 chests and a galleon comes at me, yeah im not going to fight and lose the chests are you kidding me of course im going to run and hand the chests in.

  • @cptchickenship said in A proper fix for fleeing ships:

If you can't catch them its because they're obviously better at sailing than you. This isn't even a problem, they just had good sail management where as you didn't.

  • Oh, this was a serious post. Yikes.

Yeah, I am sure the same players that are already complaining about being nailed all the time by strictly PvP'ers would love to be weighed down as well. Makes sense.

Nobody puts a gun to your head and makes you chase for hours. That was your choice.

not saying one way or the other regarding pvp/pve, but this is just wrong. Both ships have equal stats, which means if both crews are competent sailors, there is no way to catch them. which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but its true regardless. if one is chasing me I keep my sails to the wind constantly and if they make a veer to "guess" where I'm going, then i just go somewhere else and their little mistake just made the gap bigger.

  • Ships should have every right to flee; not all of us like PvP and we should be able to avoid it. Forcing ships to have to face it, no thank you.

  • @cptchickenship so we play the game as intended i.e search fr treasure, get bounties, clear out forts and maybe the optional pvp remember PVP is not forced in this game it is optional and you want to go i cant catch this ship RARE please hold my hand and give me a way so i can catch them pwetty pwease.

this is as bad as that clown who just pvps and whined that it was not fair if he destroys a ship and it has no treasure on board and he should be guarenteed gold for sinking a ship regardless whats on it because it wastes his time.

stop looking for easy pay days.

  • Solution! (not really)

I think it would be fun to have cannons on the front and back of the ship that ONLY allow you to shoot yourself, not cannonballs. I mean they are hard enough to aim already at moving targets with bobbing seas.

sure, it might have issues, but could be fun

Yeah, shadow them in the distance looking non-threatening till you see them pulling up and looking busy on a big island. Then go for the kill. If they are inexperience, youve caught them with their pants down using good strategy. You cant wonder why someone is running if youre looking blatantly obvious can you, but then, you knew that already.

  • @cptchickenship Yes because understand their perspective, they don’t want to fight but some guy keeps chasing them. Whoever is better at sailing wins. Trust me, my crew has chased down ships and been chased by ships, it’s a matter of who work sails and communicates better. If you get left in their dust then improve your sailing so next time you get them.

  • I've been chased by galleons on a sloop many times and I honestly don't think there needs to be a change. I enjoy leading galleons into land mass.

There is no only way to catch a ship as you mentioned. Get your sails to catch the most wind longer than the other ship and you win. If you can't catch more wind than the other ship and out-steer / out-smart them, maybe the skill gap is too big between the two ships.
