Wet Gunpowder

  • A little suggestion:

Once a character has become wet from swimming, they must perform a longer reload-like action (using the reload key) before they can fire again, in which they clean up the barrel / dry the powder.

Why? To give an edge to crews defending their ship from a boarding party which didn't carefully plan it's boarding attempt, without making it too obnoxious for players doing PvE and swimming up to an island.

This would pair even better with potential future features such as grappling hooks for boarding and row boats to reach islands.

Late flintlock pistols had a sealed black powder compartment that would slide open as you pulled the trigger for the hammer to hit the spark.

  • @sir-rhavi I still don't think it would be that far of a stretch. In any case, I'd love to see the shooting under-water removed. It makes sharks not very scary, and some fighting against people in water from a boat pretty annoying and weird.

The sword is already almost mandatory, seeing how the 5 ammo count is ridiculously small for the pistol & eye, I thought we were supposed to have choice here.

  • I kind of agree with this suggestion and it should happen anytime the player is completely under water, having players boarding and jump into water as soon as they're about to die, to eventually come back asap to shoot you is a pretty lame "meta".

Not to mention boarding players could easily try to reach the ship ammo crate to refill their weapon with dry ammo.

No more shooting under water but with the pistol only maybe, no blunderbuss.

  • As long as I'm fighting skeletons, historical accuracy can take a hike

  • i actually agree completely because of what @VerminPup has already mentioned and the fact that it would make sharks much more threatening.

referring to what @Sir-Rhavi has already mentioned about sealed compartments, i think it would be fair if people were just not allowed to reload while underwater, because reloading the weapon would flood the compartment and thus would not work upon the next shot.

an alternative suggestion to make without the sense of real life; firearms would become disabled until the next shot if the player was previously underwater. upon this shot, a simple splash of water would come out of the chamber.

both suggestion on a much more simpler level. ones that do not punish the player as badly and does not require the devs to develop more animations besides a small water splash effect around the chamber.

My worry when making this suggestion wasn't exactly historical accuracy. But even then, there is something weird about shooting old gun powder muskets while under water. It doesn't feel quite right.

Still, the motivation here is to remove some of the behaviors which can be abused.

I actually often go without the sword, as long as someone has one on my crew. If I'm on my ship or someone else's, I'm definitely going pistol + Blunderbuss as one hit with each is enough to kill a player, and I can quickly run to the ammo crate.

If anything, perhaps this slight nerf would allow players to carry a Sword, a Pistol, and either a Rifle or a Blunderbuss, without it being quite as OP as it currently would be.

I often go without one too, i like the pistol/eye combo, BUT if you've ever done some forts or heavy souls missions, you can see it QUICKLY becomes a "run back to ammo crate-simulator", and if you hinder firearms after getting wet, you're nerfing the people who like the ranged weapons even harder then they are already.

i did a pretty extensive post on the weapons state right now: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/44232/honest-feedback-on-the-weapons/3
