"Delete Pirate" Shouldn't DELETE Your Pirate, and It Shouldn't Be the Only "Pirate Setting"

  • @koolgoldfinch Even if they don't change anything they at least need to add a message. "warning: this will delete all faction progress". Clarification is never a bad thing. thankfully i was cautious and looked it up which is why im here.

  • @notsid-probably said in "Delete Pirate" Shouldn't DELETE Your Pirate, and It Shouldn't Be the Only "Pirate Setting":

So.. let me get this straight.. the setting that explicitly says "delete pirate" should NOT do the very thing it says it does?

Wh..what were you expecting? To be able to just set sail as any random pirate each day?

You should see a game like Rust. You don't get any choice for how your character looks whatsoever. It's tied to your steam ID and can never be changed or rerolled.

This point is weightless. If it says delete pirate, it should delete your pirate. It should not, and most definately not without informing you beforehand, delete your in game progress. That would be the option to 'delete all game progress', or 'delete save file'.

Yet another example of Rares evermore infuriating ineptitude and complacency of design. A game should never, ever, EVER allow the deletion of all progress without making it very clear that was what was being done. At some point in implementation, someone on what presuably is a team of very experiened and talented developers should have pointed out that it would be very poor design, but apparently that did not happen.

  • @notsid-probably said in "Delete Pirate" Shouldn't DELETE Your Pirate, and It Shouldn't Be the Only "Pirate Setting":

@koolgoldfinch so I offer a reasonable alternative and you don't even give it a second thought? Got it. Remind me never to offer a compromise.

Are you a developer to offer a compromise?
He's asking to be able to replace a character. Fair question. Is the opposite going to affect you in any way at all? If you suddenly meet a less hideous pirate and it used to look differently? Are you gonna be outrage and report him? jesus...

  • I'm more concerned about whether or not Rare/Microsoft has backups of our characters saved somewhere, Right now it's far too easy to launch into Sea of Thieves & delete your character with less than 5 clicks, no password/pin number is required for deletion. If someone's account got compromised their pirate would be gone in 30 seconds.

I mean its your own responsibility to protect your account and 2FA can go along way but its not foolproof. Now that I'm thinking about it, It doesn't even have to be a compromised account, it could just be a stolen PC or Xbox.

I just hope they have some kind of safety net protecting our progress. That's mostly the reason I would prefer progression was account based, not character specific. If account progression was solidified, I'd be perfectly fine paying $5-10 to redesign/reroll my character & keep my progress.

  • @koolgoldfinch Or they could just give you a way to change your characters appearance...

  • Yeah makes no sense that we cant change how our avatar looks... My dude is ugly as SIN and want to change badly lol

  • @koolgoldfinch I hope they make this a premium feature ... Pay x amount of dollars to change character model.... Is do that asap

  • New pirate, new story.
If you delete it, you delete the story behind and also the in-progress.

The best option will be to be able of having lot of different pirates. For RP purpose for example...

  • Agree 100% not sure why progression is gone also.

  • I agree fully!!!
I think I got shafted huge on the selection. I didn’t think my pirate was a ginger and missing teeth!!!!!!
I would love to see a zoom of some sort as well. It’s hard to believe that nobody thought of these things.

  • I simply can't understand how it is not immediately and completely obvious to everyone that deleting your pirate means starting over. Why would deleting your pirate not also delete your pirate's reputation?

  • @koolgoldfinch said in "Delete Pirate" Shouldn't DELETE Your Pirate, and It Shouldn't Be the Only "Pirate Setting":

So, the menu is this game is pretty barebones as it is (har har, I'm punny,) but the option that bugs me the most is that there's a whole section of your Settings Menu dedicated to your "Pirate Settings," yet the only "setting" is to Delete your Pirate and start over with a new one. Not only does it delete your current pirate, but it deletes ALL THE PROGRESS YOU'VE MADE IN-GAME!!!

That is ridiculous. If you delete your pirate, it should delete the base skin of your pirate and let you pick a new one, but it should keep all the progress you make in-game. All of the stuff you get already takes forever to get, so to erase all that progress with no indication from the game telling you that you are losing all that progress is downright ludicrous.

Additionally to that, the "Favorite Pirate" should always be an available option, not just before you pick one on the randomizer screen. Related to the Favorite Pirate, instead of spawning it in as one of the random options each time, there should be an option to "Switch Pirate" without deleting your current pirate, allowing you to either choose a brand new one from the randomizer, or look at your favorites list and choose one from there.

No matter what though, NONE OF THESE OPTIONS SHOULD DELETE IN-GAME PROGRESS. Fixing these issues would not only make the character customization feel more in the player's control, and it would flesh out the Pirate Settings menu so that the "settings" you can mess with is better than just a self-destruct button.

I 100% disagree. Your pirate is your pirate, if you reroll you restart. I have rerolled 3 times. No I am the pirate I want to be. Sometimes you just have to try them on. Like shoes.

  • Quick idea:

Have a witch who you can visit on the islands. She'll charge you 10,000 gold coin to change your looks. You keep everything, and you come out as a new person

  • @notsid-probably said in "Delete Pirate" Shouldn't DELETE Your Pirate, and It Shouldn't Be the Only "Pirate Setting":

@koolgoldfinch to be honest I like that once we pick our pirate, then that's who we are, for better or worse.

Unless you're one of the super lucky people, like myself, who have had their characters randomized for no discernable reason.

  • @koolgoldfinch Really? You do realize the pirate you choose is supposed to be who you would want to be as a pirate. I don't mind that aspect of it. It is cool to see what everyone's character looks like and know that it was the pirate that they thought was the very best. Some people spent hours doing it. Honestly why does everyone think everything should be super easy. If you want a new pirate. youre going to have to play again.

  • It should be "Change Pirate" and fully agree!!

  • It will likely come with the cash shop

How do you know that is the very best pirate those people wanted? OP chose a pirate which, he now realizes, isn't the very best.

Besides, I don't know about you but I only remember the pirates which my friends have created. Even then, when they change hairstyle or clothing, they look like a different pirate.

I never remember what other pirates look like, because every other pirate I encounter, I focus mostly on staying alive lol.

  • @scurrvybob said in "Delete Pirate" Shouldn't DELETE Your Pirate, and It Shouldn't Be the Only "Pirate Setting":

how about this then. since most of the presets are fat, skinny, normal, and with hair and everything you can change.. why not let people fatten up their pirat ? stick a cake in the tavern..people can eat it to fatten up their pirat or leave it if they want the skinny ones..everyone wins :D

edit: then your pirat could get skinny on long voyages and if you wanted you could to go eat more cake when you got to an outpost :D

i like this kinda like the beard mechanic in witcher 3 get a hair cut and shave and then leave town and your beard grows back. same here with what you said eat get full as you want or fat and then say each crew member has 2 voyages and they complete them all they come back skin and bone i like it gives more fun to the outpost and such gives you a reason to hang out in tavern besides grog. oh and the OP what did you think delete meant? i assume always delete means everything that it may be asking or saying it deletes to delete YOUR pirate is to delete YOUR pirate meaning YOUR progress.

best pirate? they are the pirate how good the pirate is depends on the player its just an avatar basically and its memory and experience is your account and the stuff you achieve so deleting it is deleting progress imagine your life is a game you get deleted from it you die and with you goes all your achievements cant take them with you. others may remember your progress and such but as for you it would be over because you have been deleted now i am off to bed i can barely think right now.... mmm cant wait for breakfast...

    Me to.

  • @scrub-toaster Well I remember my friends pirates as well. I can recognize them from afar without seeing their names sometimes. It makes your pirate far more special and it actually feel's like it means something to pick out your pirate. So if you really want a new pirate you have to think carefully? Do you want to lose the legacy your pirate created? I think its completely fair. You want a new avatar well start a new game. It puts a value onto your character after you put a lot of time into them. I feel bad for people who just chose without taking any time. That's too bad, because I love my pirate.

@notsid-probably said in "Delete Pirate" Shouldn't DELETE Your Pirate, and It Shouldn't Be the Only "Pirate Setting":

How about we meet in the middle, here? I think having the ability to freely change your pirate as many times as you want is a bit silly, but perhaps if certain items were hidden in the world, and if you got a full set, you got 1 pirate reroll. If you've played Dragonball Xenoverse, you're already familiar with what I'm suggesting, here.

How about that? Does that sound like a reasonable compromise?
This is what it should be as "delete pirate" To me even without reading about it, I knew it was going to delete everything I've done so far, it should delete the pirate and everything with it, though I'd like to reroll what my pirate looks like without having to do all the work to get it all back, I know I'm stuck with my pirate for better or worse through thick and thin. Oh well not everyone's going to be happy about it. 100% agree multiple slots for more than one pirate with their own level.
