Im playing on pc and night time becomes pitch black, lantern doesn't help either. I'm sure others have experienced this whats the solution?
It's TOO DARK at night time.
@zer0t1m3 I notice it on the bottom deck of the sloop. Even with those 2 lanterns on down there it's still really dark
Screen is on maximum brightness, the screen gets so dark actually you can see it become grainy when there is like 0 gamma.
Yeah but the lantern range is 1.5 meters max. So you're telling me that their goal was to make night time completely unplayable except for a range of 1.5 meters and the thing with that is you cant actually use weapons or anything with the lantern on, it's either or. And also it doesn't make it more fun its just strains my eyes.

I've seen a few issues like this with a few of my mates. They had changed the settings in their nvidia app for pubg. Unfortunately this meant SoT's became darker than a dark thing from dark land with added dark. I would fire up the nvidia do dah and tweak a few things.

Please, please, Rare do NOT raise the brightness. I am so sick of ruined immersion because I literally cannot tell that there is even a day/night cycle in other games. The darkness of Sea of Thieves nights was literally a big selling point for me.
You know, you are a real jerk.
He is trying to get the nighttime visuals to back the way they were before the last patch.Which means THE WAY IT WAS WHEN YOU BOUGHT IT. So you selfish pleading with rare not to change it because darkness is why you bought it is ridiculous.
Currently on Xbox it is literally unplayable at night for some people. The lighting effects have been changed so some areas are pitch black with no discernable shadows or any way to make out any objects.
You are being shot at by groups of skeletons 5 yards away from you and are completely unable to see them to shoot back. Can't fight with the lantern on.
And some caves are pitch black right now. Even when the game is daytime. I am stuck on a quest unable to see the skeletons attacking me in a cave. They are metal/gold so I have to shoot them but cannot see them. They all shoot me as soon as I enter.
Clearly that is not intended and there is no way anyone would want it to be that way.
So whatever you are asking rare to maintain is not the same issue the OP is complaining about.
The VAST majority of modern games have a Gamma correction slider for this exact reason, everyone is playing with different monitors/TVs with different default gamma settings and brightness/contrast capabilities, so it is impossible for Rare to expect night time to be remotely consistent from one user to the next without allowing users to at least configure the Gamma value in-game to find the level that looks right to them, it really is a fundamental necessity for a game like this with a day/night cycle.
Upvote this post over 9000 times so the devs see it ;)

Not dark enough for me. It’s still too easy see other ships in the dark. The first I should know about being attacked night is the flash of cannon fire in the distance that would be amazing. Crews would need to ‘run silent’ so as not give themselves away.Sorry to say it but I'd like it to be darker and put some use to the lanterns in hand and on boat. I can see just as far in the day time as I can the night and find it easy to sail with all the lights off :(
Personally I'd like there to be some risk to sailing at night, crashing into rocks etc, and increasing the demand for light house / beacons to be added into the game for navigation purposes.
Also under the sea appears to be brighter than above, that's a bit pants.
@zer0t1m3
We really need a brightness setting. We are all playing with really different monitors, so it isn't fair at all to give everybody the same brightness.I also don't like, that even deep in caves it's darker at night...
Im playi8ng on a surface pro, and for me Night time is just a black screen. The lantern helps, but its useless if you have to carry a crate of fight. trying to find the ladder to your ship in the dead of night while carrying a crate is next to impossible.
Saying that, I have noticed some crews I have played with seem to run around at night without lanterns like its day time (lucky them). for me, I just stay on the ship if its night time, because I can't see anything anyway.@myrm whistles annoyingly DARKEN SHIP DARKEN SHIP show no white lights topside! Divisional damage control Petty Officers make reports to damage control central!
Lol nighttime at sea was terrifying. Can't tell you how many BMs and QMs I bumped into on the bridge trying to get stupid reports.
It has been a problem for the XBOX on most displays since the patch that they nerfed the draw distance. The in game darkness makes the game unplayable in my apartment during the daytime due to ambient light even with all my brightness settings turned up.
I might buy the PC version if the price drops to $29 but until then I just will avoid playing in the daytime.
It is strange because no other game has this issue and Sea of Thieves did not have this issue two weeks ago. It is definitely an issue on Rare's end.
as far as i know its UWP which means that you should be able to download and play the game when login into the microsoft store on win10 with the same account you login at your xbox. but i might be mistaken. just give it a try.
concerning the darkness. i play on win10 and i dont have a problem. yes the game gets rather dark, i got a window next to me and when the sun shines bright on the screen i cant see s**t. but thats the case with every game that has dark parts. so i think its rather a local problem than a game specific one.
I have no issue seeing ships off in the distance or chests on the beach at night, for me it seems to be too dark in close proximity. Though this could be due to color range, brightness settings or a whole host of other factors depending on everyone's different setup, I would like to see a gamma setting in the game.
@zer0t1m3 For PC, until Rare provide gamma sliders, the option is to adjust brightness/contrast on your monitor and/or graphics card software.
That'll let you set the black and white levels but the midpoints can still be off so try this software if so.

As for the 50% of people complaining it's too dark and 50% of people complaining it's too light - you all need to realise that not everyone plays on the same setup. Different displays render differently hence the need for configuration.
I play on a short-throw projector so sacrifice contrast and resolution for the sake of a large screen size. I'd rather mitigate for this within the game options but if the developers won't provide any then I'll utilise 3rd-party solutions.
Simple video corrections provide no great advantage and aren't cheating. They're just tweaks that some people's setups need for all games and other people's don't.
