Build Your Own Ship

  • What if you could build and design your own ship?

Has anyone played Crossout? That game has a fantastic system that allows players to build their own vehicles for PvP combat. You decide how to build your frame, where to put the wheels, where to place weapons, how to center your weight and how much armor you'll have. This is balanced by only allowing X amount of items to be placed on the vehicle at a certain level. Each item you add also adds weight which slows you down. Every weapon requires X amount of energy and you only have so much to work with.

What it does is it creates a very personalized vehicle that you use in PvP.

What if SoT had something similar? A player would be able to choose how many sails they have, but there is only so much room to place them. They could decide where to place their cannons and every cannon adds a significant amount of weight that slows the ship down. Want to go faster? You need more sails. Want more armor? It'll add weight.

Until you reach higher reputation levels you could only add X amount of items to your ship.

This would encourage players to level up with the factions, would personalize their ships with near infinite customization, would expand PvP tactics since ships would be highly varied, and it would reward players who build a sea worthy ship that meets their play style.

If you haven't played Crossout, check it out. It's free on the XBox store.

  • Great idea, i completely agree with upgrades. So are you asking to head it towards Blackwake? or completely draw up a ship? i dont think that would work as much as just buying the parts on the based ship... remember they looked almost alike back then.

  • @zsneakydude

In Crossout you can build/tweak your design based on presets that you can unlock, players can share their designs, you can have the CPU generate a vehicle randomly with the parts you have, or you can build your entire vehicle from scratch.

I haven't played Blackwake so I'm not sure what that system is like.

  • @jakeguy59 Sorry bud i meant Naval Action, not blackwake.... Was thinking of that blackwake in another topic.

  • @zsneakydude

😔 I haven't played Naval Action either. I'll look it up.

I used Crossout as an example because it's a vehicle PvP game that allows infinite customization. It's also free so anyone on Xbox can check it and see what I'm talking about.

I think a similar system would work great in SoT. In Crossout first and foremost you need to have a driveable vehicle. Then it has to pack a punch in combat. Meanwhile you have to design a build that won't get blown up right away. It makes for a very balanced system.

Having to do this with 17th-18th century boats I think would be a lot of fun!

It would also free Rare's hands from the pressure of adding more ship types. We'd take care of that ourselves.

  • @jakeguy59 The engine involved to be added to Unreal, would have to be custom i believe. They could add pieces and the parts auto connect after you purchase them, lots of pieces. To do a completely Placement engine would require a revamp of the current engine.

  • @zsneakydude

Aye, if what you say is true, the idea obviously likely isn't going to happen then. But, I think it'd be perfect for a game that is supposed to be about customization and playing the way you want.

  • Just don't make it like Robocraft, I think the ship models should all be made by Rare so you don't mistake them. I'm all for ship upgrades though.

Hehe, could make me able to create the "Vasa" ship (swedish ship that sunk on its v****n voyage ;) ).

  • @tzeraph

Hah I was literally thinking about the Vasa when writing this haha

    Great minds think alike ;)

  • Customization that isn't purely cosmetic is very welcome!
