Currently rank 31 with gold horders, last night I did 12 missions with this rank and received a total of 2 captains chests, the rest were castaway and sea farers and 3 merauders.
The game is great but punishing people with worse rewards as they go along is not a real sound strategy.
A buff to the quality of chests vs. the level of the mission needs to happen... please.
High tier quests should provide high tier rewards
@faith12 I think it depends on luck and location. If you spend 10 minutes doing two missions that return 600g in two chests then spend 15 minutes doing a longer mission that returns 800g in four chests, you might have a higher payout 'per voyage' but not always 'per moment'.
People want to be rewarded for ranking up, and I know they don’t want people to become legends over night. However increasing rewards and at the same time increasing ex requirements would solve both issues. I put the time in and will continue to, I just want to feel some kind of accomplishment for the work I have done so far (monetarily), and continue to do.
I don't know if this has been confirmed, but in my experience as I've gotten higher level voyages I have been finding higher level extra loot on the islands I visit. Make sure you search each island carefully for additional chests, notes in bottles, skulls, etc....
Riddles provide more 'extra' chests on the islands they appear on.
The loot from the voyage itself may stay relatively the same, with probably a slightly higher chance to grant higher chests depending on voyage level, but the loot on the islands you go really seems to be boosted.
Personal examples from a single set of voyages yesterday now that I have 25 gold hoarders..
Shipwrecked' Captains chest - Found on target island, half buried.
2 Notes in bottles- Pirate Captain
- Merchant Alliance, Gunpowder(Easy 1000)
Sunken Ship -Right off the coast of target island(Gold skull, exotic spices, another bottle)
Another Gold Skull found hidden on an island
Now that is additional loot we hauled back asides from the voyage chests we also collected. (which included 2 captains chests)
I could never say that my voyages were so lucrative at lower ranks, and it's not like I'm much better at the game. I'm doing pretty much what I've been doing since the beginning but instead of finding random seafarers chests and normal skulls, I find extra mauraders chests, runed skulls, and the occasional exquisite spice/captain chest.
Speculation: Ranking up(and buying the appropriate promotion) increases a voyages 'worth'. The 'worth' is distributed between the actual reward indicated (X,riddle, captain, trade) and the random loot you can find on an island(or surrounding shipwrecks).
Too many times have people told me to get back on the ship after 5 minutes of searching, only for me to find an extra chest...you have to look beyond the clues! These islands are laden with treasure!
Happy hunting and keep those eyes sharp.

You just leveled up your passive "awareness" skill. Not your character's, but your own. Who says there's no progression?! xD
I don’t disagree with You on the fact that finding loot on islands happens, and is usually not bad(on large islands). However, counting on finding an extra chest or two on a four island mission is not what I’m speaking on here. This particular thread is based on the rewards of high tier missions and the % chance you will dig up one of the different chests. I don’t discredit you, and you make a good point, but when Out looting (a four map mission for example) I would find 1 marauders, 4 sea farers, maybe 1 captin, and the remainder castaways. A total of around 1750 in total loot from the mission alone. If you add in a random captains or marauder. That does not make up for the fact that anytime you dig up a castaway Chest you miss out on 350-850$. This is the point I am trying to make.
Level 20 gold hoarders quest:
Bought for 80 gold
4 part clue costing about 10-15 minutes not counting travel time (time is a resource, is your game worth playing over others?)
1 chest reward valued at 165 goldNet gain 85 gold and big waste of time!
A higher level quest should be worth a larger reward!
NO EXCEPTIONS!
