Upgrade costs

  • Ahoy mateys!

As much as I love this game and have convinced many friends to get it, it is getting hard to keep people playing. I personally don't mind the progression system being cosmetic. To me it leaves the PvP up to skill. Player X won't win most times because he has hundreds of hours to sink into the game where Player Y has a full time job and family but is better skilled but loses because equipment. It's a nice, and I'll admit it, casual game to grind out and enjoy for some, and for others who have the time there is the Legend status to work to. That being said, there does seem to be the lack of content. As much as I love this game I can't deny that. And it is getting harder and harder to keep people hooked with some of the prices. Sailor upgrades are a bit high but having my faction levels higher and learned strategies to get the strongholds done in an efficient manner we get gold at a decent rate to keep them hooked. Everyone is getting to the point of their pirates being upgraded but the ship upgrades.. It looks daunting at how high the cost is vs the gold you're making. 70k for the basic shaders and 140k for "upgraded" shaders? Even myself, I'm at the point where I'm deciding whether I even go for the "basic" set, or do I grind the faction who's "upgraded" shaders I want and just sail around in the basic ship? But then 420k seems like a lot to grind to and to look basic for that long feels a but daunting and off putting. Is it just me?

Let's keep the hate and disgusting comments out of here and just voice our opinions and be reasonable. Thanks! (:

  • I agree the ship cosmetics are dauntingly overpriced. I haven't bought anything yet, have about 20 hours of playtime and have saved up 45,000 gold. I know I'm not a pro gold farmer, but I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to grind gold to obtain those cosmetics and feel I am not making any progress. It's too grindy ATM. I'm also disappointed to see so few cosmetics available for our ships from the beginning. For a cosmetics only game there needs to be a LOT more diversity in the options available.

  • @scarecrow-404 There is no balance in the rewards for the quests and what you get, so I wouldn't expect any better from the prices of the items.

I really enjoy the game but if it wasn't an opportunity for me and my brother to meet up occasionally (both are full time job and family players) I would have left it already until the content is corrected.

Let's just look at it this way. You get 0 gold missions, get a map, two tops and go get the chests. in each chest you get 300 if you are lucky. You upgrade and start paying for quests, the only thing that changes is the number of chests, it just takes you longer, but sometimes the payoff is not worth the hassle.

To do that for days until you gather enough to buy an overpriced whatever is not fun, it's a job. I already have one of those, fortunately.
It's just not worth the trouble in my opinion.

  • It's quite easy to understand, cosmetics are super expensive because there is so few to choose from. So, in order to avoid players to get everything is a short span of time, they had to make them super expensive.
What i can't figure out is why they didn't add at least twice or thrice the amount of available cosmetics, with much more level requirement steps (now it's either "available from the start" or "requires max lvl in a given company", that's poorly poorly designed).

For a game where cosmetics are so predominant, to me, Rare failed to deliver in that regard.

  • U earn enough money to get the 70k and the 140k if u wish. I bought the hull and sails and already am on 55k. And my ranks are 27-25-25 so time enought too get too those hulls. Also u have 3 monhts before the big patch comes, for us people who have enought time too grind its along wait but for the people with a job etc have time to do there thing.

  • They are quite high, but it doesn't take very long to get 70k+ gold. One fort will give you 10-15k. I can get around 10k in about an hour soloing (only 3-4 captain chests and a couple of villainous skulls). Although I have been extremely lucky with my drops I feel.

Really you're looking at a week of play to get a ship upgrade (if you played a few hours each night say). Maybe a little longer. That doesn't seem unreasonable, considering it too me 3 months of grinding on GW2 to get my ascended set :(

    So its fine )

  • I feel like the cosmetics for your character are fine, since making them too low priced would make pirates with a full set of clothes and doodads seem less experienced. The ship cosmetics do need to have a lowered price though. Somewhere between 20 - 30 thousand for each.

  • I agree the pirate costs are reasonable. They're low enough to keep you chasing the carrot. Then I must have terrible luck with drops. Even on the step gold hoarders or the riddles i rarely get captains chests. I get more lucky getting villainous skulls. And the strongholds, there you need a group, my friend and I got a strategy for 2 of us to do it. But it seems like when there's a group of 3 or 4 it seems like the strongholds aren't up or we get caught up fighting another ship or 2 at the stronghold lol. It's just getting harder to keep a group going in the game because it all seems so daunting because the prices. I agree the level 50 faction costs at 140 could be reasonable, gives a sort of endgame addition to the Legend endgame. But it doesn't seem reasonable currently because the "standard" upgrades are too pricey to make the endgame upgrades feel special

  • Seriously saying that something is too expensive because you dont have all of it in a week? I say double the price so that it really means something when coming across someone with a decked out ship.
I want it all without the effort! Just sad...

Learn to read Troll. We don't all live in our parents basement, able to play 18 hours a day. You shouldn't be half way through every faction's reputation purely to buy ONE beginner's cosmetic. I understand having to grind for more legendary cosmetics, but these c****y beginner's cosmetics should be fairly easy to get. And I am very curious where all the cosmetics they showed off in the videos and Beta's are at, the shark and the skeleton w/ sword and shield figure head for example.

  • @latham06 First thing’s first, nice answer calling someone a troll like that. I have a lot to learn if i am going to keep up with the toxic players of today, so thanks for the heads-up!
Btw, i moved out in 1991.

Second... I hate to p**s on your parade but if you think that because you have 25/25/25 you are half way, just sorry...

And ofcourse third... I am about 16/15/12 and i still dont think i am entitled to anything. I remember a game a while back where getting an epic-grade item actually meant something, in that same game today you get an epic item every time you kill a boss with a group of five and all players have multiple legendary items.

I fail to see the point in playing if you cant even wait longer than a week to get cosmetic items that have zero impact on the gameplay.

Patience is a virtue but that is clearly just my opinion...

You were clearly trolling and started being toxic. Nobody ever said we wanted all the upgrades in one week. Nobody ever said we didn't want to work for it. But we want intermittent sets to grab while we work for the "epic" sets since you want to use WoW. Yes, the end game sets should be a grind to get. But the mid level sets shouldn't feel like the same grind. And there should be more than 2 tiers to work for. Obviously the first would be cheapest but least appealing, but at least you're earning something, it'll feel like you're actually doing something rather than the same 3 mindless tasks and just getting gold meanwhile your ship looks just like everyone else's because the costs are ridiculous, especially for the lack of choice we have.
