Game Still Won't load, DCOM Error, event id 10001

  • Problem - Game will not launch, splash screen comes up for 5 seconds and game closes with no error message. Windows Event viewer/system shows -

    Unable to start a DCOM Server: Microsoft.SeaofThieves_2.74.9691.2_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe!AthenaClientShipping as Unavailable/Unavailable. The error:
    "998"
    Happened while starting this command:
    "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.SeaofThieves_2.74.9691.2_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\Athena\Binaries\UWP64\SoTGame.exe" -ServerName:AthenaClientShipping.AppX1tppsmwxvf2km3jd8xq57zc8r6c65hfj.mca

    I've completely removed antivirus, disabled all firewalls. Uninstalled game, re-installed 4 times. From other forum posts people suggested:

    1. logging in with microsoft account to machine - tried both ways.
    2. uninstall/reinstall xbox insider app - never had it on comp to begin with, but did that with same result
    3. loading a different windows store app - done, other apps work, SoT doesnt
      4)Checking router settings - other user with game is on the same network and gets in to game with no issue
      5)Installing windows update KB4088776, done. No Change
    4. Log out of all windows app/xbox services and tried. No change

    As you see I've put in significant effort, looking for other solutions as multiple tickets with tech support has resulted in nothing so far. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

  • See lots of people having this problem, can a moderator please flag the technical department and get them a fix?

  • @cash-masterson I'm sorry you're encountering these problems, I'm not in any way tech savvy but I do recall a few players having similar problems during the alpha and beta, there is this webpage which i wonder if you've found - this did happen to me and the way to resolve it was to change my PC login from a local account to logging in with my MS credentials, which it seems you have tried.

    Also this post on reddit which is 1 month old -

  • @cash-masterson

    Have you tried throwing your computer out the window, preferably from the second floor or higher?

    If not, maybe a complete format would do ze job?

  • @katttruewalker Thanks for the info. I've already looked at that post from the Sea of Thieves support site, but I haven't looked at that reddit post. It seems that I've already done all of the things they listed on there, however. I suppose there's no harm in double-checking that all the drivers are up to date, though.

  • @kigretheviking If my computer wasn't worth $1200, I would have already thrown it at my rich neighbor's window and stolen his computer.

    But yeah, I was thinking about just formatting my computer, but I want to make sure I've tried all possible solutions beforehand.

  • UPDATE: I also ended up getting this error, event ID 10016:

    The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
    {D63B10C5-BB46-4990-A94F-E40B9D520160}
    and APPID
    {9CA88EE3-ACB7-47C8-AFC4-AB702511C276}
    to the user {===} SID (S-1-5-21-3921558415-1670555452-926294644-1001) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

    After attempting to open SoT, it gave me an error message saying I cannot run the game, and that I needed to reinstall it. I ended up reinstalling the game but then I just got the same error message again.

    This seems to tie back to the whole "DCOM Server" issue. If anyone has a solution to this issue, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Just did a search for "DCOM" on the forum and there are several people posting the same thing. It looks like you have tried everything that they have suggested, can a Rare employee please get some feedback for these users or perhaps run a teamviewer session to debug the cause?

    Here's another user having same issues - https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/38888/help-me-please-game-broke
