Pirates being Pirates

Nitpicking.

There's two types of pirates. The famed pirate blackbeard who was a real pirate and probably teamed up with other pirates as so many did. And then you have the dread pirate neckbeard. This is the most terrifying pirate of all. Not only will neckbeard kill you, he would totally crouch repeated over your dead body's face... if ya know... crouching was a thing.

I enjoy the PvP in this game (which is rare for me), but I don't actively seek it.

It bothers me that I cannot find friendly pirates ... EVER! Every time I try ... I get cannon balls in response.

This is not the community we should be fostering.

Pirates never used almost semi-automatic pistols and sniper rifles and they did not board ships cannonballing themselves. It's not a pirate historical reconstruction game.

The main reason why everybody is hostile is that PvP is the only really exciting activity in this game.

I don't think he's inferring it should be 100% historically accurate ... but using the "but that's just being a Pirate" defense of being a goon is weak. Especially when your response to being called out on it is "well, it isn't historical".

Is it being a pirate or is it not historical? You can't be both.

I'm perfectly fine with "non-historical" stuff. I just pointed that his arguments are pretty silly while referring to the XVII century pirate reality :)

Maybe because people see the romanticized versions of Pirates and skip over all the betrayal that happens, or the thieving and backstabbing and go straight to the adventure part of it.

As well as forgetting that they were criminals and typically didn't come together they were more often forced together under threat of death or loss

@astrodr0naut I'm just pointing out how silly it is to use pirates being pirates as an excuse.
I'm not calling for the game to be historically accurate. I actually like most things about the game, including the PVP.

I've had more bad experiences do to lag and server glitches than with PVP. Most of my PVP stuff has been fun.

If there was a single change I would at least consider making is to have 1 outpost per server to be a "safe zone". Not even sure I would allow turn ins there. More of a meeting place.

If this game wanted to be an actual pirate game you wouldn't be fighting skeletons... or shooting yourself out of a cannon... or having a galleon crewed by four people... or have a Kraken... or be able to swim with enormous chests of gold... or digging up chests of gold (not something pirates typically did - bury their gold)... so come on. Make an argument against people using "pirates being pirates" as an excuse, if you want, but don't start off by claiming that PVP is what's not making this an "actual" pirate game.

@spec24 I agree. So lets just admit that attacking other people is part of what makes this game fun. Let's stop pretending it has anything to do with acting like a pirate.

@samoclarkey First, no, pirates didn't attack each other for treasure. It just didn't happen. There were very rare fights between them but it was never to steal treasure.

Second, its not about being realistic. This game isn't realistic. I just have a problem when people use the incorrect "fact" that they are acting like pirates and it is a pirate game to put down those who don't like the PVP.

@goht Completely agree. Let's admit we do this because we find it fun and we can. Not because it is pirates being pirates.

This is factually incorrect.

It did occasionally happen, but for the most part they did not do that. The larger offenses were captains screwing over crews - like Bellamy did with the Wydah.

yeah and the undead aren't real either. So lets do away with those completely aswell, and just have buried treasure quests and avoid snakes and that's it.

I personally roleplay Captain Gnashmaw as "cautious but trustworthy towards non-enemies until they screw him over. Then they're dead, pirate or not."

If they did away with PVP that would do away with a large portion of the game. At that point, you may as well remove cannons from the ships.

I bought the game at Feburary 1st and still didnt receive an email or a notification from xbox. Can anyone help? Thanks a lot mateys!

The point isn't that we shouldn't engage in PvP - it's that the rationale of "well, it's just pirates being pirates" is laughable (at best) and disingenuous (at worst).

You engage in PvP because it's fun and you enjoy it ... not because "that's what pirates did".

I don't think I was crying about anything. I was explaining what the OP meant.

I didn't admonish you for enjoying PvP or that people shouldn't PvP. It's that the excuse of "be more pirate" is absurd considering that isn't pirate.

Just be honest -- you PvP because you enjoy it.
