Only 2 chicken coops?

  • Just a quick question... Me and a friend had to catch 3 chickens, but we only got 2 chicken coops from the Merchant. Can you normally get 3 chicken coops, or do you have to find the 3rd one yourself on some island?

I've seen them lying around islands, but ofcourse when we needed them they were nowhere to be found.

  • On the quests that had me get 3 chickens, the Merchant gave me 3.

  • Thank you for your answers, cheers!

  • I am still trying to figure out how to catch them Lol

  • @baldy-bush Quick movements are key haha. Also, keep hold of the LT button on your controller (sorry, I’m unsure of the correct keyboard key) while you’re chasing them. If it’s in range for the right amount of time it’ll pop in without you having to press the button when prompted.

  • Merchant missions.

You should always be able to get exactly the right amount of coops, cages, baskets and boxes that you need to fulfill your order from any merchant. It is usually advisable to get a single merchant voyage, propose and accept that mission then "draw stores" from the merchant that sold you the voyage.

Now plan your voyage using either knowledge you've gained from previous animal seeking quests or a "cheat sheet" like this one - SoT map. I tend to find it best to go to the bigger islands as there are usually more animals.

To actually catch the animal pick up the correct receptacle (coop for chicken, cage for pig or basket for snake) and go ashore. Once you spot what you're after chase it and when you're close enough for the writing to pop up e.g."Golden Chicken" press and hold RT or left mouse button for a few seconds until the chicken or pig is caged. Now return to your ship, not forgetting to feed you pig when he cries.

Snakes are a bit trickier because they bite but at least they don't run. Approach them slowly, whip out your instrument (a musical one) and play them a quick tune to send then to sleep. Now put them in a basket and return to the ship. Keep an eye on them and if they start to wake up drop them and play another tune.

  • I personally think this system is quite lame.

So you have to buy the mission from the merchant.
Walk across the island to your boat (your boat is often not right next to the merchant)
Propose the mission on the captains table.
    Vote it active.
Leave your boat and walk back to the merchant.
    Take one coop.
Walk back to your boat and leave that coop.
Leave your boat and come back to the merchant.
    Take one coop.
Walk back to your boat. And you are on your way.

Thats a lot of effort. Why can't there be coops just lying around all over the merchant isles?

  • @pseudospring And that’s just assuming there’s only two animals to hunt! I was on one last night that has seven different animals to capture. The trips to the ship and back here he most tedious part 😂

  • @statueelch34166 So far I find that is a lot of time to risk in the event of a server disconnect or enemy pirate attack.

  • @pseudospring I was fortunate enough to be able to hand this one in without too much trouble. Me and my crewmate did turn away from an Outpost that had two Sloops docked up on the shore though. It's not worth the risk when the cargo is precious...
