Hi, i have a bad english and 'im sorry for that. I have a question: How can the galleon's faster than a sloop? It's a bigger ship, so, why? A galleon is heavier than a sloop. Thank you for reading and please, comment this topic!
Speed of ships.
@blackpiwate well physics on a object that is flowing on water is diffrent they how they work on ground. bottom line the havier the object is the more it will float on water meaning weight isn't a factor.
and since the gallon got larger sails the wind effects it a lot more.
with the wind going the same direction your sailing gallon faster im not sure how they made it with wind not going with the direction your sailing but they should be same speed.
althought keep in mind sloop got MUCH better turns so if you escaping from a gallon use it to your advantage.
hope i was helpful :)@blackpiwate you will find with the wind behind you a galleon is faster than a sloop (it has more sails after all), but sailing into the wind, the sloop can outrun the galleon. @KattTruewalker and I tested this the other evening after being persued by a galleon. We were able to pull ahead and eventually they gave up. :D
@xtherealpants sagte in Speed of ships.:

@brotgoesblack i dont think your looked well i said its not a factor for speed its a factor for floating...
While the explanations given above aren't quite accurate, in the real world larger boats are able to move faster through water than smaller boats, even though it seems counter intuitive. Look up Hull Speed.
Basically, as a boat moves through the water, it creates a wave that travels along with it. Bigger boats make bigger waves, bigger waves travel faster and allow the boat to travel faster since it is in essence riding this wave. If you try to move faster than that wave you are basically trying to go up hill and all that extra effort gets you nowhere. So each boat, has a maximum speed based on its length at the waterline.EDIT: Additional Info. This is just for displacement type hulls, like the boats in Sea of Thieves. Other types of hulls that are able to lift out of the water and hydroplane do not adhere to the same rule.
