A complaint about the Merchant alliance Voyages.

  • A time limit? really?

OK guys the go to 4 random islands to find a white chicken and a red speckled chicken then take to a random and specific outpost already stinks bad enough but does it really need a time limit?

Seriously finding a message in a bottle that's been laying on a beach for goodness knows how long and I just happen to find it in time to be asked to deliver 2 chickens or pigs or etc etc by 7am as I watch the sun setting... Really?

I've failed the few I've tried before I've even found what the contract is looking for.... so I haven't even gotten to the part where I hear you need to feed the pigs to keep them alive... Did you guys go out of your way to make them as unpleasant at possible?

  • Merchant Alliance is horrible.

The quests (that you can't 'chip away at' alongside other quests) are boring (so far).
The crate/coup system is horrible. If a pirate can hide A Shovel, Watch, Compass, Scope, 10 cannonballs, four trees worth of planks and a whole banana plantation, then they can 'hide' (carry without CARRYING) 1-2 coups. (Or perhaps Ships could be modded with cages to hold any livestock. We certainly don't need a Brig on the Sloop (so it could go there) and there's enough space below the galleon. We wouldn't even need crates at all. Just pick up flapping chicken, and the shove him in the pen. Do the reverse when you need to sell.

The lack of direction is annoying--people can try 2-3 islands before finding even the wrong colour chicken.

The whole idea seems poorly thought through. The experience is disjointed and awkward. If they had a note on each order saying: Chickens have been seen nearby on Islands X and Y, then fine. OR, let players activate one quest from each of the three factions at once.

The coup stuff is the worst bit, though.

  • currently I'm gold hoarder 18, souls 13, and Merchants 5... and I'm only 5 because I happened to find 3 crates, I think they were sugar, tea and Spices?

  • Chickens have been found in the following locations:

    Barnacle Cay
    Cannon Cove
    Chicken Isle (duh)
    Crook's Hollow
    Marauder's Arch
    Old Faithful Isle
    Shipwreck Bay
    Thieves Haven
    Twin Groves
    Wanderer's Refuge
    Salty Sands

Pigs have been found in the following locations:

    Blind Man's Lagoon
    Cannon Cove
    Devil's Ridge
    Kraken's Fall
    Lone Cove
    Old Faithful Isle
    Paradise Spring
    Rumrunner Isle
    Sea Dog's Rest
    Shipwreck Bay
    Shark Tooth Key
    Sunken Grove
    Thieve's Haven

Snakes have been found in the following locations:

    Crooked Masts
    Devil's Ridge
    Lone Cove
    Marauder's Arch
    Picaroon Palms
    Sunken Grove

    Hope this helps.
There are some great tips on tackling the merch quest on this forum also, run a search if you fancy getting into it. It's a bit daunting at first, I quite enjoy doing these now, lol. Left my friends Gallion because they wanted to do fort raids, I just wanted to go and create my own lil Noah's Ark! haha

  • The merchant coups/cages should be purchased rather than handed out or just part of the ship.

A risk/reward thing. I can buy a few cages - and use them but I might lose them to another pirate.

But having to take a quest before getting any cages is silly. I think those cages should be free with the quest, but otherwise - I should be able to buy cages.

  • @captainsloopdog a dit dans A complaint about the Merchant alliance Voyages. :

The merchant coups/cages should be purchased rather than handed out or just part of the ship.

And if you lose one, you can just cancel the voyage, making these quests even more tedious.

There should be no limit to how many coups/cages you can get, charge a small ammount of gold for it, I don't care, but we should be able to get any kind of cage whenever we want.

Some kind of journal with a page being added for every island you set foot on would really be nice, that way you could take note of which kind of animal you can find on which island without having to cheat and go look lists on the internet.

Pen and a notepad? lol. Jk I like this idea. An in-game journal tracking recently explored islands, it's wildlife, commodities and hazards would be nice.

[edit] do you really think looking at the list online is cheating though? seems like efficient use of time to me.. If you explored the whole map and had a full journal, would you deny another player or a friend that knowledge because their journal page for cannon cove was empty? sorry mate, can't help you, you cheater. Go find it yourself. You're a tough pirate, lol]

    Merchant Alliance is horrible.
If they had a note on each order saying: Chickens have been seen nearby on Islands X and Y, then fine.

I have no problem with the way it is, I took it upon myself to start charting what animals are found on each island, most medium/large islands have 2 types of animals, either chickens and pigs, pigs and snakes or chickens and snakes, so I suggest every island you go to you start writing down which animals you see there, then when you get a voyage you can consult your writings. I feel like its part of the explore the seas concept, and I don't need my hand held.

  • I certainly agree Merchant voyages are probably the most tedious of the lot, because you HAVE to dedicate one voyage per sailing, you can't just pick up the chickens, slap down another voyage and go from there (unless you find messages in a bottle). I definitely want all the types of coops to be sold instead of alotted per voyage.

They're also the most annoying to do because I think I've run into more griefers while running Merchant Alliance voyages than any other type. The type of people who will just camp an outpost (that you NEED to get to before a certain time... which at least is somewhat decent), and blow your ship up just cos. You can't just join a different server because you lose the voyage, and the time you spent sailing to the islands just to locate the livestock. You have to go get your chickens again (I'm not even sure if you're allowed to get more crates from other merchants), and sail to the SAME outpost where those same people are waiting for you or any other ship to come and f**k with.

  • The problem my crew have with Merchant quests is theyre naturally far slower than the other two, purely because of the "Deliver Here" portion.

The others can all work in tandem, clearing the Journey table when target killed/dug up.

TLDR; Merchant Quests are poorer than Hoarder/Souls because the return trip is a "dead weight" trip with no ability to turn it into additional income.

  • @ssg-felony Here, let me get my world's smallest violin. If you don't like the quest style, then don't do them, simple as that.

  • I have a list of the islands we've visited on my desk along with the animals on them ive written out.

  • The Merchant Alliance just feels so incredibly clunky in design, and it's probably because it was the last faction to be pushed out and it didn't even get that much testing ahead of time.

You can't even start a quest unless you're at an outpost since you need to pick up cages, and then you have to pick up the cages to bring them over to your ship. Then you sail somewhat aimlessly trying to find an island with the animals you're looking for (unless using a user-created cheat sheet), and it just feels silly that this is the only thing to really do.

IMO the best way they could make it feel better is if we could have it serve as a side-voyage like the bottled messages, and then we could also queue up a Gold Hoarder or Order of Souls quest alongside it. That way we can focus on the treasure/skeleton bounty but pick up animals on the side as we see them. Then it makes more sense as to why you can only pick these quests up once per Outpost visit, and it encourages heading back to outposts more regularly between excursions.

Like I enjoy that MA stuff can be found frequently in shipwrecks and powder kegs can be sold for ~120 gold apiece. The bottled messages make it even better. If we could just have the MA feel more like a side thing than a main thing, that would help make it feel less tedious to raise it up.

  • @ssg-felony I have levelled my MA almost solely from skeleton fort loot. It seems to be easiest at the moment.

  • Straight up they should be delivery missions not go find the product then deliver it. Paid based on cargo type and distance traveled.

  • @ssg-felony Mermaids Retreat has all the colored chickens and pigs you need

  • @epicdejavudoo said in A complaint about the Merchant alliance Voyages.:

Ya but where do you find the coups and pig cages?

I mean is it possible to stock up on a bunch of cages?

  • @rdizz said in A complaint about the Merchant alliance Voyages.:

I like this; or alternatively have the MA merchant/quest giver able to sell you the cargo for the MA quest you have active (unless they are the merchant for the island the quest delivers to, because that would be silly) so you can hunt down your own stuff for maximum profit, or buy the stuff and deliver it receiving less profit and potentially risking your own money on the venture.

The cage system is really overly clunky currently.

Actually instead of "buying the cargo" you should have to pay a deposit. A sort of insurance incase it never makes it to its final destination.

If another player or crew steals it, it should also be considered stolen and only sellable to a shady dealer somewhere. And this is where we introduce the "pvp" faction of sorts.

  • @rdizz the hard part will be making it worthwhile to deliver it rather than just sell it to any other MA merchant, if you buy it for less then "list" price you'd just sell it back immediately and print money, but if you buy it for list and sell it for list, the only thing you get from the contract is reputation. The cargo would need to be worth more to that particular MA merchant, or the contract itself would have to pay out a bonus amount on completion.

  • @maamar - I love this idea.

It might even be awesome if we got to write in our own logs. Rather than the game giving us the answers - we go in and jot down notes for ourselves.

    In 100% agreement!

I think that you should be able to capture goods, find goods and turn them in ... but for the merchant guild ... I think they need to be merchants.

A trading system ... and if you're being a merchant ... your flag shows the merchant logo. Then pirates know you might be carrying the stuffs.

Being a merchant should be have strong benefits too. Some reason to be a merchant delivery boy as opposed to a pirate.

    LoL!!

  • @captainsloopdog Have the wind direction flag on top of the mast show the symbol of whatever kind of voyage the ship is currently on? Make it seem less like the ship is always trying to surrender? :P

@captainsloopdog Have the wind direction flag on top of the mast show the symbol of whatever kind of voyage the ship is currently on? Make it seem less like the ship is always trying to surrender? :P

Exactly. I made a big post about FLAGS.

The other thing I would do is make it impossible to fire on another vessel or pirate unless you "raise the black".

You have to hoist your colors if you want to engage someone.

Granted, I'd add a lot - a parlay system (ie. you can negotiate out of the fight ... like real pirates) and the like. But ... I'll just take more content right now. Any new content. :)

  • @captainsloopdog Or a "voyage" type you don't need to buy from anyone, it's always in your inventory you can put on the table to vote for, the jolly roger, hunting other ships, when it's your active voyage, you fly the jolly roger and when you're close enough to another ship your crew can see a little spyglass style coloured glint on ships that have treasure on them. (Because pirates can see when your ship is running low in the water and filled with booty) would also give pirating crews less reason to m****t players who don't have any treasure on board yet.

  • @santach - That's my kind of thinking! Listen to the man, Rare!

  • Completely agree. This quest system needs some work. It's just unfortunate it wasn't in earlier testing much so we're only now really seeing the flaws. I like the idea of just being given cargo and being told to transport it. Make the distances further than the other two factions and keep a time limit. Keep it tense but reasonable and comparable in profits to the other two factions.

Also the loot is pretty much worthless to pirate right now. I sink you and steal your chickens. I get like 14 gold per regular chicken whereas if you had finished the voyage you might've gotten 200 per chicken. I want that gold!

  • @padd said in A complaint about the Merchant alliance Voyages.:

@ssg-felony Here, let me get my world's smallest violin. If you don't like the quest style, then don't do them, simple as that.

    You're right I don't like them so I don't.
P.S. if the MA sent you looking for that small violin its probably going to be a long night for you.

  • Can't take credit for this idea, but I can pass it along.

What we've been doing is while we're first stocking our ship, we also propose a Merchant voyage, get the cages, cancel the quest, propose another, get the cages, and so forth until we have at least six cages. As we do our other voyages for the other two alliances, we grab every critter we come across. Once we turn in our chests and skulls, then we get more Merchant quests and see what our cages hold to fulfill them, canceling them, if we don't have what we need. At the end of our session, we just sell the remaining livestock. I'll have to test it to see if there's a difference in the gold and reputation we get for non-ordered sales, but we were getting over 100 gold for our random chickens and a decent amount of reputation, too.

I've consistently had luck for pigs and chickens of various colors on Crooks Hollow & Thieves Haven. Seen various snakes on both too - I make those islands my first 2 stops on all Merchant Alliance voyages.
