Managing party..Horrible system.

  • First of all. If I start a solo journy, why can I not invite a friend to join me? I have room on my ship..

Second: Me and my friend started a journy on a Sloop, he had to leave and I wanted to bring a friend, but there was NO WAY to invite my other friend to join me. I looked in the Xbox app (windows10) and the only option I had was to invite him to party, he was already in my frikkin party in the app..No where in game did I have a option to chose who to invite.. = I could not invite him to my game from the app and neither the game itself, and after a few minutes a random guy joins me on my ship.. I mean, really?

I triple checked, I could not see any options to invite him. Can someone please explain this to me? :/

  • There's been multiple posts about this, and it has already been addressed by Rare. In short, it is something they are looking at fixing in an upcoming patch. No timeline has been given, no guarantee that they will go through with that fix, but it is on their radar.

  • You are correct there is not a way in game after you enter the game to add more people.

But you can EASILY invite people in the xbox app by clicking on them, and then choosing invite to game.
The only way that option is NOT available is when you don't have a spot for them.

  • For now, your friend has to join a sloop random, see if it's u. No, then leave and do it again over and over till he lands in your boat. So long as your in a open session. We lost a cremate from game crash and his 4th galley join was US,

  • is there a way to join a two man sloop crew and play with a random and then when a friend gets on to play kick them from your crew and invite your friend to the open crew spot on the sloop? Does the brig system handle this?

  • @alymon So they make a game that is meant to play with friends, but they dont think about this before releasing it? Wow..

  • @buurz

1 Thats something they should look into asap, same goes if you are 3 on the galleon and a 4th friend come online. I also think we should have a way to change the ship in game to adjust according to the number of friends playing/leaving. @Deckhands Meaby we should have a megathread on this? 😁

2 If your friend goes on the xbox app select you then he will have the option to join your game

No, not exactly. They very clearly thought about this before release. As I said, they've already addressed the subject and indicated that they are working out how to implement it in a fair and balanced way. It's not just as simple as saying do it and they do it. And there were numerous core mechanics that were designed around the current party system in the game that all have to be evaluated for impact if they change it.

I'm not saying there is going to be an impact or that it can't be done. What I'm saying is that significant changes to core mechanics require full impact analyses on all other core mechanics, significant development work, multiple test cycles and can be very challenging. They also have to consider the potential for exploits and how more devious players might try to exploit the system.

Rare thought it through. They made a decision to do it a certain way. They confirmed that they are considering changes to their original design idea. They've acknowledged they are working on it and will address it somehow with a patch. You may not have liked the decision they made at launch for the mechanic, but there's a lot more to the decision then just "I want" and "Other games do it".

No you can't. You cannot convert from solo to two man. Absolutely, the most archaic party system I have ever used, it's like it was designed in the early 90's

Nice cop out, there is no design decision that can justify such a poor party system

  • @mattydove74 What cop out? Go watch the developer interviews, read the articles along the way. Read the AMA they did on Reddit before launch. Rare has already addressed it and said they are testing options and looking at how they can implement changes to this mechanic.

No thanks, I'm almost as lazy as Rare, but if you want to link them, I will look at them. More effort than Rare put in, since working and logical party systems have been in games since the first multiplayer games released.

  • Yes, totally, but the devs are already on it, Let's hope they patch it soon.

  • @mattydove74
I believe it was in the final video they did prior to launch. The original livestream on mixer that included the unlock for the Ebon Flintlock Pistol. I can't load the video right now or I'd check. You can find it on mixer.com/seaofthieves or linked on https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/24673/sea-of-thieves-video-library

"Working and logical party systems have been in games since the first multiplayer games released." is a demonstrably false statement. Multiplayer games have existed for over four decades. Party systems didn't really develop until give or take a decade... the late 90's.

Either way, each game is unique and the party systems implemented need to revolve around all of the game mechanics. They absolutely considered it. They tested it. I believe it was during beta testing when they realized they should consider changing it. But that wasn't something that was going to hold up launch and it's something they can (and have talked about) patching in.

  • @alymon Starcraft was my first multiplayer and it had a working party systems. Hell even muds had better party systems.

I'll look at your links when I get home, thanks for posting.

No problem. If you can't find it there, let me know. I'll check when I get home as well. We may fundamentally disagree on what we consider a party system based on your examples, but it's been a long time since I thought about muds so I may need to refresh my memory of them. :P

  • @mattydove74
Where did I say you could convert from solo to two man?

  • This is my first post on the forum and feel that this is almost a game breaker for me.

Considering that the social aspect of the game has been promoted at the forefront of the fun we are supposed to be having, the current "party system" really needs addressing and quickly.

On a one crew sloop it is crazy that I have to leave my game and current ship stocks etc when my nephew (who I bought the game for to play cooperatively) messages me to join a game.

We should be able to leave and join as and when necessary. It would make it far more enjoyable.

Hopefully this will be sorted soon as it seems far more important than an initial thin lack of content.

Well done Rare for a beautiful looking game.

  • One of my largest issues with this game is the locked into Xbox live party system and using Microsoft. Yes I know Rare is microsoft and all that. I get it.

But if this game was on Steam (as just 1 example) right now, it would be much larger. The party system is horrid. The ability to move with or to friends is horrid. And it is a game built largely around groups. For being as restrictive as it is to Windows 10 and to Xbox Live, you would think they would at least have that system optimized. Using the Xbox live app is clunky to say the least.

I am glad they are working on a fix. Truly I am, but they seem to be working on a fix to a lot of very core basic things that are needed to drive a good group, party based game....hope they get it worked out. I am pulling for them.

  • This definitely needs to be fixed. It reminds me whem I was trying to set up a local game on my pc with my 28800 baud modem.. but my lil sis keeps on picking up the phone

Well that is quite a bad way to treat people. If you have a friend joining, its all on you. You have to leave and get a session with him. Other guy has nothing to do with that.

  • @kgmshylian I just think the option to disband the crew should be available in the menu next to scuttle ship. You should spawn back in the pub with no crew and have a ui option when you wake up to auto fill the crew again or invite your friends.
