We need 6 player+ crews NOW

  • I am currently sitting here, waiting for one of my friends to get off his computer for me to play with the crew. I have read in an interview that the devs feel like we would prefer a 4 man squad over any more because it would be a ''more intimate'' experience and that ''4 is the magic number''(and a lot, maybe most, seem to disagree). The problem is that not everybody wants a casual, slow-paced experience in a a looting, ship managing, pirate themed game, where the thing that invites me (and what invited 7 of my friends) to play the game was the teamwork, effort, and immersion that the game could have provided with the difficulties that a 6+ member crew could (and still can!) provide. It may require a new, bigger ship, but I'm ready for whatever, as long as we get a larger max crew size.

-here is the interview with IGN.

  • Nah, we don't need that. 4v1 is already bad enough. Besides 6 people on 1 boat is more than 1/3 of the server. At most there would be 1 other 6 man crew on the server. Good luck finding them so you can have a fair fight.

  • @dedzgaylol

Ships with that many players on them would destroy the already questionable balance that currently exists.

    I don't see this happening.

  • While I agree there is a balance issue, I don't disagree with the assessment.

There should be drawbacks to big ships though. Easy to beach. Harder to turn. Less acceleration.

Sloops were the main pirate vessel of choice because they could get in/out quickly and then lose big ships in the shallow waters.

The Queen Anne's Revenge and the Wydah were anomalies rather than the rule.

  • 5 is good. Anything more is too much.

What was common sense in real ife doesn't help balance out SoT servers. I don't mind they put in 6 player ships, but then you should have exclusive 6 player ship servers. With upgraded difficulties. I don't want to meet a 6 player ship with my solo sloop.

I wouldn't either, but you wouldn't fight a ship that big. You'd turn tail and run ... and those ships would have little hope in catching you.

If you're in a sloop - you're primary gameplay should not be to engage bigger ships.

  • @captainsloopdog Yes but why should we waste more of our gaming time running from those crews. Some are so aggressive they just want to blow anything out of the water that they can. I don't mind getting ganked from time to time... but it gets old fast and ruins the experience for me. I think the best solution is to make pve servers with bot controlled ships for the casuals and pvp servers for those wanting grandiose battles and pvp combat. Then it would be win/win.

  • 6 lol yeah 6 vs 1 great :d

    I don't think you'd find a lot of good 6 player crews.

Plus, there could be drawbacks to a ship that size.

    • Make them easier to beach. A smart captain brings them into shallow water and they sink themselves.
    • Cannons up close would be impossible to aim at smaller craft.
    • Slower.
    • Easier to see on the open ocean.

I agree that there should be some AI controlled ships. I mean, this is a piracy game and there are no merchants/traders to plunder?! Absurd.

Personally, I think they ought to make a trading engine - and some players can try to earn money through trade as opposed to piracy. This would allow pirates to actually attack merchants - as opposed to killing other pirates.

    I dunno.

But I think ship variety is SERIOUSLY important.

  • I’m all for 6+ crew. How you going to be a pirate solo. If you wanna play solo I think they should make a separate server kind of like Fortnite. They give you the option if you wanna go solo amongst the crowd you can or just stay solo. But please!!!! Add 6+ crews

  • @captainsloopdog

Neh, the real problem is that 6 player ship bring six player crews on land with the too. With 4 players this is already an issue when attacking a Skull fort. You easily take down everyone with a six man crew. So again, I'm all for you getting your six man crew, but you gonna play it on specail 6 man ship servers. They should make separate Galleon and Sloop servers too imo.

  • @caelumnl

I can see that being an issue. I don't know how to handle it.

I do know that ship variety is boring at this point.

Maybe as they expand the game - they can have more dedicated ship types. A merchant vessel that is more defensive or speedy, but no real offense for trading. I don't know.

So much potential in the game - but so much seems wasted based on their design choices.

For the record, I have essentially only solo'd at this point and encountered no real issues. Been lucky.

  • @captainsloopdog

I too played mostly solo and I have been only downed/attacked once by a galleon. I have no problem playing solo either. But I haven't done anything special yet either, that involves active PvP, something the devs are also aiming for in this game, like attacking a skeleton fort for the key to some great booty. If you got a 4 man crew with 4 times the cannons and guns, you are already not having a chance by yourself or a friend, let alone against six people. It's a fun thing for the right game, but this is not that game. For a triple A game, they keep it all kinda simple, which ain't bad. It's just a design choice. Having 10 different kinds of ships tramples right over that choise. Different hulls that do the same thing, cool. But don't overcomplicate stuff. This is not that kind of game.

  • We'll have the 6 Players Crew for sure when the Lifeboats will be introduced.

For now I'm pretty sure the next ship we'll have it's a 3 players ship!

  • Server size is also a problem to be fixed. We need more. And for the balance issues, Solo players shouldn't even go to activities designed for 4 man crews ( yeah I know, it sucks for solo players ) as they are too hard for only one player, and the chances to encounter one dominant ship destroying all the other small ships are high.

The game looks to be clearly fit for team play (3+) and I suggest finding a lfg discord server/subreddit to get the full experience.

Games are made to appeal to the larger part of its community. Whether solo players of crew players are the majority, is what I don't know.

EDIT - I do think that making 4 to 6 member crew only servers could be a solution. Definitely.
AI ships and crews should also be mixed with Player Crews; Rewards fitting the difficulty of the AI ship (with the difficulty being shown by visual effects/decoration on the ship) sounds like an amazing idea to me.

  • If they expand the server size 5 is the max I would suggest, 1v6 is a bit ridiculous, 1v4 is doable, 1v5 is a perfect challenge.

I agree with this. If they were to increase the player count to 6 on a ship/crew, then it needs to be its own separate mode. I do however think 4 is just shy of being an easy sail, however, if I were to face more than 4 I can see why they wouldn't want that.

Its a hard thing, opinions are going to differ greatly, where a specific server would be the only real option.
