Maintenance every 3 days?

  • @mrtrendall What the hell kinda game are you playing that requires server shut down and maintenence every day?

  • @dead1nthehead 4 hours at the most I should've said, it's 3 hours for 2 of the 3 days. Either way it's not a big deal, go watch a movie or play another game. Maintenance like this is typical for the early days of online only titles.

  • @erikinthebakery your right it is complexed, I feel the server downtime is a little excessive at the moment. new game they need to work on issues to get it running give it a few weeks and see if it improves the game. its good that the known maintenance has been told to us, would be good to know if they are going to make the server maintenance a weekly thing on a certain time and day etc. like most other online only titles.

  • @oneinsightning I'm an xbox player. My description fits many major titles out there today. A lot still being played only because today's gamers are used to being sold unfinished products and know no other way.

  • Really think it’s silly doing this on the first Saturday after release when people have waited all week for the weekend to play

  • the only thing i ask is that the "server status" page actually tell me that the server is not up.

right now the servers are down for maintenance, yet teh "server status" page says everything is unky-dory.

  • @macdeath82 exactly. It's one of my off days ( Saturday and Sunday ) and I can't play the game. They should do maintances in work days...

  • @prodigy-burns Name one online game that has taken their own servers offline every 3 days for 5 hrs. You say its 'normal', I personally have never experienced this level of 'maintenence'

  • @mykemichail Regardless of where you are in the world, if a game needs maintenance or updates/patches, then it needs maintenance, updates/patches. Consider yourself lucky you got the game considerably sooner than other people who don't live in Australia (USA, Canada, Europe). If maintenance was convenient for you, other time zone players would complain about it. This is the global world we live in (unfortunately). The only real way to solve it would be for every country to be on the same time zone (GMT for example) and get used to going to bed and sleeping in the daytime.

  • In 11 days the player base will srink considerably when everyones free trial on game pass runs out

  • @dead1nthehead maybe we have our black dog pack and the mixer skin after maintenance ^^

  • @grayman-666 If it's a global world and a global company/product then the maintenence should reflect that and be at different times so that the time zones share the downtime rather than lumping all maintence at exactly the same time and p*****g off one timzone more than the others

  • The actual status page says it’s down til 2pm today... so 5 hours not 3?

Which is correct.. 12 or 2?

  • @dragostan Hopefully, would rather be playing to 'earn' my skins tho

  • @x1-two or they are just making everyone aware so they can plan accordingly?

  • @crashmatwarrior From the times stated, I calculated 8pm till 1am in my timezone.... 5 hrs

  • @dead1nthehead wow and I thought 3 was bad enough... right at the start of the first weekend gameplay too.

I think they should’ve kept scheduled maintenance to week days personally.

Personally, I welcome the maintenance times. Shows they are working hard to fix the proplems that have been reported rather than ignoring them and running with the money. :-)

Agreed! Most developers would just release their beta and then laugh as we all purchase it for the price of a full release game.

As opposed to what Rare has done, which is just release their beta and then laugh as we all purchase it for the price of a full release game, but can't play it properly, nor in particular primetimes due to five hour maintenance periods.

  • Even mobile games MOBILE GAMES have the decency to give several notices well in advance in game to let players known that a maintenance is occurring on that day. The best Sea of Thieves can do is let you know 30mins in advance in game. Gee thanks....

  • @mrtrendall said in Maintenance every 3 days?:

So every 3 days for a quick purge of the files and some quick patches is really not that bad. Also note that a simple game which runs server side rather than client side will require some serious server power to run smoothly for the amount of players in the game.

quick? Five hours isn't quick, it's the entirety of our Saturday evening.

They have thoroughly evaluated the "prime times" and heaviest server loads. The time period they have chosen for maintenance covers the lowest server load time window.

If you weren't happy with the content they provide currently then you wouldn't be upset by the downtimes anyway. You can't hate on a game that you consider a beta and can't play properly - yet at the same time be upset that they take servers down for maintenance.

  • @mcdoll The thing is with them putting the game into game pass and then allowing everyone a 14 day free trial on said game pass, half if not more of the player base hase not actually paid for the game, it will be interesting to see the numbers in 11 days when everyones free trials run out

    Gotta love game forums.

Community: your game is broken! fix it! reeeeeeeeeee
Devs: We're taking the game down for maintenance to fix the game.
Community: HOW DARE YOU TAKE THE GAME DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE! THIS IS RIDICULOUS. REEEEEEEEEE

This is probably the best reply I have seen all day.

  • Love this thread. I know nothing about maintenance or games or anything but it sure makes my (hopefully) 3 hours go fast reading this Tomfoolery. Think they should just shut this one down

  • @dead1nthehead Most of my references are too old to find, but I recall being regularly kicked out of Smite due to server maintenance when the game was early or more recently Destiny 2 went down quite a bit in the early weeks of its launch one time going for 7-8 hours straight, so 2-3 hour difference on the whole throughout the week. According to the notes however it doesn't seem this will be a weekly thing with Sea of Thieves and the times may get shorter.

  • @mykemichail If you think Rare haven't thought about the impact the maintenance is having on it's player base then you are sorely mistaken, this stuff NEEDS to be carried out regardless of what you think. They've chosen a time slot that works for the vast majority of their players, it has nothing to do with how many people live in India or China (we can throw population numbers around all day but they mean diddly-squat). If you don't have anything else to do for 3 hours on random days then I suggest go out for a walk or watch a movie(?).

As for only paying a third of the price because of where you've (chosen to) live, get over yourself! On a scale of 1 to Paris Hilton how privileged do you actually believe you are?!

If you want a better Internet connection, take it up with your ISP and/or government, not a game developer in another country!
If you read the OP you'll find it does not say 'every day'.

TL;DR - No-one's forcing you to buy the game but not doing so for the sole reason that Rare wants to support it and keep people happy is the definition of back-asswards!

  • Look at this way, first bombardment of people on launch day caused server havoc because it was something like 3x as many as they had in the scale test with 5k per minute. Maintanence 1 basically settled that. Now you have Friday, picking up the launch week latecomers, those that have only had chance to get the game etc and low and behold there was server issues because it was friday night and the game would naturally be more populated, hence maintenance today/sat. Then you get the Tues one to fix any outlying issues made evident through the weekend and perhaps some bug fixes and stuff. On top of all that the devs have been runnning 24/7 since launch and I imagine the scheduled maintenance was to allow them some form of actual significant break.

Id much rather not have the game for a few hours than it be ignored, the servers go down unexpectedly for hours/days in some AAA cases and the devs are left going "errrr we're working on it" ala Bungie and their shoddy work these days.

  • @prodigy-burns We can only hope for weekly as that is my experience with online mulitiplayers such as SOT, only play the 1st Destiny and cant remember it happening all that often, will take your word on number 2. Rare has already scheduled a 5hr maintenence in 3 days so hope is a big ask at the moment

  • @muertoamigo420 Stated times are 5hrs not 3 but yes its popcorn n read time haha

  • @d-muhny umm, what?
Where did I say I hate the game?
I'm annoyed that it isn't what it was initially promised to be.
I can be annoyed that the game I paid $110 for and has f-ckall content in it as it stands, isn't available for me to grind as much as I can in the desperate hopes of seeing if the other 90% of the game is maybe locked behind level fifty with each faction.
I'm annoyed because I like the foundations of the game, but it hasn't lived up to it's potential.

And the downtime is a particular prime time.
It is the prime time for Australia, New Zealand and the pacific.
I never said it was the global prime time, now did I?

Hence, I suggested earlier that they stagger the maintenance times, or offer some sort of ingame bonus to those who have their primetimes always shafted.

    I said hate on.
It was promised to allow you to shape your own adventure. It delivers.
As a global cross-platform game, they obviously will do maintenance during the lowest server population times. It is unfortunate for you that is it your preferred play time.

Now I do agree there is some lack of obtainable/purchasable items. However, I still have quite a lot I would like to buy and cannot (for perspective I am 30/31/25)

  • Is that why servers are down at the mo

  • @phillandamy14 yup 3 more hours.

  • @wintersmith81 that’s the spirit! Nothing in life is perfect!
