Maintenance every 3 days?

  • @dead1nthehead said in Maintenance every 3 days?:

@erikinthebakery Then why not mix up the times a bit so as to minimise one timezones peak period being taken out everytime maintenence happens?

Because Rare are based in the UK. Can't be expecting people to start work at 3 AM. People have lives, families etc. They've obviously picked the time that works best for both user numbers/peak times and the welfare of their employees.

Sucks for you guys. Perhaps they could repay you another way, like an exclusive skin or something, but only if this keeps happening on the regular.

Not being able to play a video game for a few days over the timeframe of one week is frustrating but hardly the worst thing in the world. But if you guys in Aus/NZ keep getting hit with this for months then they should do something for you IMO.

  • @boxcar-squidy Though I do agree with most/if not all of your post, I have a life/children etc as well. I've also heard of overtime. This is a global product. If a company launches into the global world they need to cater for their clients, all clients not just there local ones. They want to b***h about working long hours then only release the game in the UK

  • @dead1nthehead That's a fair point. But so is: where are all the Aussie devs releasing games?

Edit for clarity: as in where do they release games? Where are the devs is another question.

They both lead to the same answer though: your market isn't as important to them because there's less of you. You want Rare to shaft their staff and more of their players to suit you guys. I would too if I were in your boat, but there's a reason it's always you guys, and not just in this game

  • @noruas And always ALWAYS in Australian prime time - I mean come on all - you shaft us for the cost of the game and then we cannot play it cause your maintenance ... is I dunno - slap dab when we Aussies can play!!

  • 3 hours man long

  • @boxcar-squidy Yeah to bloody bad hey haha Did like your pun. Our govenment refuses to put money into game companies as they feel it's a 'waste of time', one of the biggest industries in the world right now (game dev) and my country is sitting on its hands. We would rather dig big holes in the ground and ship rocks all over the world. Anyone who has an idea or start-up here eventualy ends up in the UK or US becuase they actually invest in it there

  • @phillandamy14 Pretty sure it's 5 but moot point

  • @myrm THIS

  • We need New ships

  • @hauntedfox1319 You seem to be missing the dozens of Asian and Southeast Asian countries between India and China.

  • @hillgroover I'm not asking for a better internet connection. I'm asking for servers in the country where they want to sell the game, like PRACTICALLY EVERY MAJOR GAME RELEASE has.

They actually do have Australian based servers, I can tell because I got into an 80 ms ping server the other day, but it doesn't give me a choice to select matchmaking region, so I keep getting stuck on servers with 200+ ping or have to log in and out.

How entitle are you, that you would expect someone to leave their country to play a video game with a decent ping? How entitled are you that you believe that a developer shouldn't have to rectify an issue affecting the quality of service to some of their customers, so long as that customer isn't you?

And finally, I already have no intention of paying for this game if this pattern continues.

5 hour downtimes during the primary hours I, and the majority of Australians will have to play is ridiculous, especially considering the high premium price-tag they've put on the game - significantly more than US players.

They could take steps to break up their downtimes, such as having shorter, more frequent down times, or spreading them over staggered time zones so they don't always affect the same people in the same timezone.

You calling me entitled, for being annoyed at something that doesn't affect you in the slightest, really shows how entitled you think you are.

  • @grayman-666 So stagger the maintenance times.

They want to take my money they can give a decent level of service.

  • @dead1nthehead if the Chinese market ever fully opens up, we'll end up finding out what it feels like and you lot will have it much better.

  • @dead1nthehead Star citizen, Elite dangerous, Eve online etc... All games that have a 1 hour downtime every day at the same set time. Sometimes the servers down for 10 minutes (Basic restart) sometimes something happens and someone pulls the plug resulting in 3 hours of downtime (Very rare cases)

  • "Such a simple game"

Maybe Rare should hire you since you apparently know better than they do about server upkeep and programming.

  • LOL You people.

AWs: "I CAN'T PLAY!". "THIS GAME IS TO BUGGY". "OMG FIX THIS YOU'RE KILLING THE GAME". "I'VE UNINSTALLED THIS GAME"!

Rare: Okay. We're working on it.

AWs: "OMG WHY ARE YOU WORKING ON IT!? I CAN'T PLAY NOW!!!!11"

  • @mykemichail no I'm not there are 7.6 billion people on the planet

  • @mykemichail my point was 2 billion people is not even half of 7.6 billion half would be 3.3 billion

  • Maintenance is always a good thing me hearty!

  • @hauntedfox1319 And my point is that I wasn't calling India and China half the worlds population, but between the timezones of India and China, there is half the worlds population.

  • Community: There are too many launch issues! Unacceptable!

RARE: Okay, we'll do server maintenance to alleviate the issues while we fix.

Community: Maintenance downtimes?! I paid for this, I should get to play whenever I want! Unacceptable!

Elite Dangerous does not have a one hour downtime every day. It has a regular down time of about 30-60 minutes at 7am GMT once a week, every Thursday.

  • @myrm I admit it's been a long time since i last played that game. I was sure they had downtime everyday close to the release date. I guess things have changed since.

But you get my point that games do have downtime, but i do agree that Rare's downtime is a little excessive 9-12 (3 hours) unless they're updating servers or adding updates etc... including running a quick internal test to make sure it's stable.

  • @hauntedfox1319 Half of 7.6 billion would be 3.8 billion....

    Stay in school kids...

You calling me entitled, for being annoyed at something that doesn't affect you in the slightest, really shows how entitled you think you are.

SoT can be purchased digitally so it can be purchased and played in what I would hazard a guess at around 85-95% of the world, wherever there is decent Internet access at least - do Microsoft need to start installing servers in every country in the world then?

I don't know you, so why would I tell you to move country, not once in my post did I suggest you move to another country! Twist my words in your head all you want but it doesn't change them. I don't know if you're old enough to move, I know people that can't wait to leave Australia that's why I parenthesised 'chosen to', but I still wouldn't suggest you move, you've completely misread/misinterpreted me there, besides that had nothing to do with Internet connection it was in response to you demanding the price be a third of what myself and everyone else paid for it. I suggested you take up the Internet access issue with your ISP or the government so maybe take a moment, gather your thoughts and read my reply again.

When did I say that a developer shouldn't have to rectify an issue?! You do realise that is exactly what Rare are doing with this scheduled maintenance and I completely support them, you would know this if you actually read my reply!

How does this not affect me exactly?! 5 hours is 5 hours no matter where you are in the world! I was completely unaware this downtime was happening - I'm not blaming anyone but myself because it was me, no-one else but me that didn't check Twitter, Facebook or the SoT website, so when me and my mates all got on to try and play we were just as upset as you were. I however, did not take to the Internet and mash my head against the keyboard and spew out shallow demands about the price of a product that has nothing to do with Rare; Microsoft, the publisher sets the RRP (and the price they sell it at in their own store), other stores can chose to sell it at whatever they want. If you're referring to the price on the Microsoft store, it's the same price as it is here in the UK so there's absolutely no merit in complaining about it either. There are plenty of other places and ways to buy the game cheaper.

They already have taken steps to 'break up their downtimes' why do you think it's spread over a couple of days(?)!

Like I said, it was 5 hours... it was actually just under 4 hours because they finished their maintenance and had the game back up and running within the time they announced. So you're saying you should only have to pay a third of the price because a game was up and running for 97.6% of it's first week?

    A few things to consider:
YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL! This affects EVERYONE.
The scheduled maintenance IS NOT 5 hours EVERY DAY!
It WILL NOT be 5 hours every time there is maintenance.
It WILL NOT be every week.

If you can't find something to do for those 5 hours on Tuesday then I suggest playing a different game; watch a movie; read a book; take your pet crocodile/kangaroo out for a walk and chill the hell out!

  • @mykemichail said in Maintenance every 3 days?:

On Australian East coast (where 80%+ of the Australian population lives), this is 7 pm to 10 pm.

This is just ridiculous. You want to charge AUD$100 for the game and then make it unavailable when the majority of people will be able to play it.

I am in Australia too and the maintenance period is c**p, I agree.
But why do people keep harping on about a $100 price tag. Shop around, its like $79 in stores like Big W and JB etc. Finally, why not embark on a Game Pass free 14 day trial and experience Sea of Thieves for Free!! If its so shallow like folks are saying that will be ample time to enjoy it. Or, why not spend $10 a month and be a member and enjoy it all year long, plus 100+ other games.
The only reasons people pay $100 is either:

    • You don't know about Game Pass
    • Your thick
    • Your a legend and want to support Rare financially.
    • Your too lazy to shop around

Comments not directed at any one in particular, just a culmination of so much s***e I've read today on these forums.

  • @boost-king I don't have an Xbox One. Only PC.

I can't find any information about how I register an Xbox One copy to my Xbox Live account without an Xbox One.

I guess I could go to my brother's place and log into my Xbox Live account on his Xbox, register it, and then go home and play it on PC?

Xbox Game Pass doesn't give me the ability to play all the games that you could play on Xbox, and out of the ones that are supported on PC, I'm really not that interested in most of them. That's why I bought a PC...

  • @mykemichail I might have to look into that. I also play on PC, it was essentially ready and waiting for me to install thanks to game pass.
Not sure how it works if you don't own an xbox console. Anyone have any ideas?

  • @hillgroover Anyone who works a regular 9-5 job is going to have exactly 2 hours from the time they finish work till the time servers go down for maintenance.

Hopefully these 5 hour maintenances won't last long, but, as I was saying, scheduling to ALWAYS be during the exact same time zone is fairly unfair.

They could shuffle it around a bit, even just 3 hours forward would be great. That would be:

Australian Eastern Standard Time - 4 pm to 9 pm - so people can jump on after 9 and have a few hours to play.
Eastern Standard Time (New York) - 5 am to 10 am (most US citizens would be at work)
Pacific Standard Time (California) - 2 am to 7 am
GMT (London, Paris) 9 am to 2 pm
CET (Paris, Berlin) 10 am to 3 pm

So quite literally, the only people who would be effected by moving it forward, would be the unemployed and kids on school holidays.

You're not special either mate. Maybe we should schedule the downtime in the only 5 hours you have to play the game.

There's 24 hours in a day. Most people will spend 8 of them sleeping. On weekdays they'll spend around 8 at work. That's an 8 hour window people have to actually enjoy the game and 5 of it is maintenance.

If you can't miss out on 1 hour of your gameplay time so some other people can actually play the game then there's something wrong with you.

I should also mention, regarding the ping issue, that there's already servers in Australia. Microsoft has had them for years.

In fact Microsoft has servers in practically every developed country in the world.

The issue is caused by a lack of match making region selection. I really don't want to be matchmade to a server in Europe to which I have 300 ping.

  • @boxcar-squidy no duh that was my point he said 2.7 billion was half the world
Maybe learn to comprehend what you read

  • @hauntedfox1319 Yeah ok, I'll learn to read when you learn to do maths.

You said half of 7.6 billion was 3.3 billion.

As I said, stay in school kids

  • @mykemichail I dont get the point of your "schedule".
If you wanted to point out, at which times the maintanence would be,
it makes no sense, because u got paris twice with other times.

You should use the local time of each timezone if that was your point.

Im fine with that times, for me its while im at work ;)

  • @x1-two sagte in Maintenance every 3 days?:

@myrm sagte in Maintenance every 3 days?:

Personally, I welcome the maintenance times. Shows they are working hard to fix the proplems that have been reported rather than ignoring them and running with the money. :-)

Maybe. Or you could say that announcing the second and third maintenance phase and its longevity already means that they have no confidence in fixing the issues in the first maintenance phase.

That would be pure speculation. It could also be that Rare is thoroughly examining operations and taking their time to do it right and not rushed. Better have planned maintenance in extended windows than more unplanned downtime or even complete data loss. Like when you reroll a new pirate, ... but thats another topic.

  • @boxcar-squidy being able to read and comprehend are two different things maybe you should have payed attention in school
