Disappointed at how uninspired/barebones it all is for a AAA game

  • Genuinely gutted by the game. I love the sailing, and really enjoy the "forced" teamwork for running a galleon. The simulation/fun balance is spot on for me. The sea, the lighting and the weather are amazing it's just a shame pretty much everything else is so lacking. The fun is already waning with so little to invest in.

The party system is awful, you can't just have friends drop in and out. After a huge amount of messing around we figured out that the party is locked to a size, so me and a friend can't start and invite others as they come online, which is terrible. Even worse is that if someone drops out we get randoms joining the remaining players. This just results in a terrible experience for both parties, I'm not being "mean" I just want to mess around with my friends and not randoms, and i'm sure randoms don't want to be where they are not really wanted.

The missions are essentially the same thing just with different shaped objects to turn in, it's like the ending of Mass Effect 3 all over again. It's so disappointingly uninspired, did you really not realise this? The merchant missions could have sent you somewhere on a strict (tight) time limit instead to test your sailing skill. How about NPCs/players trying to raid you and steal the goods or slow you down, maybe the game flags you (like the skull forts) to show you have valuable goods. But no it's just get this and bring it back like everything else...

We completed a skull fort last night and the loot room really highlights that everything is basically the same, just a different shape and given to a different person.

Even worse is that you can't do anything else at the same time. You have to start the mission, run back to the quest giver for cages, then get the animals, you can't just pick them up while doing a treasure mission at the same time. Hell, the merchant faction could have just been an animal/goods turn ins without any quests, maybe make you buy/hire the cages so there is a risk/reward element to carrying lots of cages.

The game is actually horribly un-casual too, there's no tutorial, but worse is that you basically HAVE to cash out and complete everything currently active or you lose hours of progress you can't return to later. Everyone has to start together and end together, which is not how many people tend to play. Losing found maps/items is frustrating too. My friend turn up unexpected and I had to ask him to watch for 20 mins while I finished a 4 chest bottle map and returned to port with 10+ big chests. I'm not sure what I'd suggest for this, but it's still not great.

I really don't agree with the lack of a character creator, your system is randomly generating from the parts you designed and would have been chosen from anyway so what difference does it make? But whatever, I can live with it, however you could have at the very least added an option to choose a sex first and made things 50% faster instantly. Why not make the "Favourite" option weight the results, or have a "More like this" button.

What truly baffles me is that the "hard" to make stuff is amazingly good, the framework is there and I love it, just barely anything is hanging on it. The world is empty with nothing to discover, there is essentially one enemy type, and that one enemy type has the most basic AI possible, progression feels hollow, missions all feel the same, and PvE combat is just boring.

I don't want to be harsh but the game feels like it's at the very beginning of Early Access, with a sound concept/engine just waiting for the actual "game" to be added.

What happened Rare, is this really your best? You're a well established AAA developer, you can't make NPC ships? You can't make more than one enemy type? You can't make a decent grouping system? You can't make more than 4 figurehead meshes? You can't do better combat? No Parrots in a pirate game...really...? No story at all? No interesting progression? So many basics are just not there, I am just shocked.

You seem to have cut every corner (other than the sea/sailing) and yet everything is still so shallow.

I'm passionate because I care, the game has SO MUCH potential, and i'll be gutted to see that wasted due to (and I hope not true) a lack of creativity, or even worse, a lack of ability within Rare. Rare was literally THE BEST during my late teens, and frankly i'm horrified to see where you are now, releasing hollow shells like this. There are still glimmers of that amazing past, but sadly glimmers aren't enough. So many are clearly testing the game via Game Pass, and I can only imagine the huge drop off once those 2 week trials run out and people feel there's not enough to justify that subscription. Both Sea of Thieves and Game Pass will suffer unfortunately.

  • and another wall of text post to the pile

  • @omega-131313 A forum might not be the place for you if you're not willing to read...

  • Whilst I am enjoying the game I agree with almost all of this

  • I disagree about the game being un-casual. I found it all remarkably intuitive starting out. There's nothing you can't learn without a little explanation.

  • @omega-131313
Getting to be a pretty big pile. They'll have to read one of them eventually.

  • @mr-chernobyl

I only read the title... uninstall game if you are disapointed. you are 1 in a million as it seems by the latest rare post. Good luck on farmville.

  • @blackbeardluffy Quality reply there, maybe try and make it past the title before jumping to conclusions. What the hell at the "Farmville" comment? Maybe try and add something productive...

  • @lintaglen this one was one of the good ones tho :P i agree with alot of it. i will still play since i feel like i have to. what if the later content is good and ends up behind a level 50 rep wall. so we grinding these shallow sea's.

  • @blackbeardluffy "I only read the title, and assumed you attack my favorite game with no good reasons for it. uninstall at once stupid. yes you are stupid, not me, me that don't read through posts..."

  • I like what I've seen thus far. That said, it really is hard to understand the lack of content considering how long SoT has been in development. Did they have to start over a few times? Massive Dev team shake up? Lose code and assets?

  • @mr-chernobyl

I personally think they took the wrong route for the game. They see it as a sandbox - players are the content, they're here to provide the framework and some barebones systems for us to play with.

Like you, I think that really undersells the game's potential. The core sailing and co-op mechanics are such fun, but an actual game on top would be indescribably good (albeit a lot of work).

  • @nes-death-angel

I'm still playing (when the servers let me.)

I'm not disagreeing with the post. Check my post history and you'll notice I've been very vocal about how this game is being handled.

i still support it, but I support the idea; not how it's being handled. Rare is falling on their face and ignoring the hands to help them back up.

  • @dimwitmegalodon it’s the right intention building this sandbox. It’s beautiful and the lore surrounding the fantastical world is fun. However they gave us no toys to play with. The whole world is a decoration and you can’t interact with anything.

Can’t make fires, sit in chairs etc. I remember in the beta and I saw a crane on an island. I couldn’t do anything with it but I assumed I’ll be able to use it when the full game launches... you know to raise friends, lower chests without taking fall damage. Nope :(

  • @blackbeardluffy So you suggest we grief players rather than have a better grouping system, yeah great idea, that won't drive off players who have an awful first impression.

Your whole reply seems to be either work arounds to poor systems, or just a dismissive "it's coming later". How about actual fixes, how about devs seeing a system is clearly poor before release...

  • @blackbeardluffy said in Disappointed at how uninspired/barebones it all is for a AAA game:

    @mr-chernobyl

Omg u made me go back... read your post and g********r in my brain.

Okay mate plz just uninstall the game... this game does not need crying w****s...install farmville... be happy. Leave the piracy to pirates. Hows that for productivity !

You're really upset that people think the game could be better.

I think I've narrowed this mentality down - you're like one of my kids when I give them all ice cream. You're so intent on making sure the other kid doesn't have more ice cream than you. You can't stand the thought of it. You're eyeballing everyone else's ice cream, and you're convinced someone's trying to take your ice cream away.

  • I agree with most of OP, the game feels like a framework to be added to.. but its just a damn shame we have to wait longer for them to flesh it out. It seems its the world we live in now.

People are foolish to think Rare does not read these posts, just because they haven't replied. This game represent 4 or more years of loving work, it is their baby! of course they want to know people concerns... why would they want the game to fail?

Play for the time your attention span allows and come back when there are updates.

  • @Mr-Chernobyl

I wouldn't be so disappointed or critical of the developers just yet. Games in this generation compared to the years prior tend to be a bit lacking in comparison. They start off smaller and build up to a better and more interesting end game. Not all games come fully developed or complete. It takes many years to perfect a game. I think for what the game offers and who you end up playing with will determine your experience in the fore front. Feel free to add me and maybe i can change your opinion on how the game feels.

  • @mr-chernobyl the point of a forum is to post your thoughts, thoughts should be short and sweet. look at every other post on here its not a wall of text. no one truly wants to read a wall of text

  • @s0lr3aper I think my concern is this game just won't have the time to work out the "kinks" and turn it around. Sadly, I can see a lot of people trying with the Game Pass and just never returning, burning a lot of potential Game Pass subs too.

  • @blackbeardluffy

I would like to prelude this with the fact that I am not trying to start a fight, but offer some perspective.

Everything “that’s coming later” you say, was supposed to be in at launch. Rare said it would be in at launch. The party system is an issue, because locking someone in the brig does not fix the issue. If I am locked in the brig right off the bat, with no reasoning behind it, I will stay in the brig, and both of us will have a bad experience. If someone used their words, then I would happily get off for their friend. The party system is lacking in many regards, and there is a total of about 6-10 cosmetics for each clothing slot, and about 14 reskins for said cosmetics. This applies to ships, except there are about 2 cosmetics for each slot. In this article they claimed that everything you say was supposed to be in the game, the map was supposed to take 6-8 hours to sail across, that this would be huge. If this update in 3 months isn’t huge, I am marking this under my ‘No Man’s Sky’ list. And while this will have no effect on Rare, I can guarantee that there will be a massive drop in playerbase in the coming year. This game had so much potential, and still does, but it is currently being wasted.

  • Concern trolling has reached a new level.

The naysayers will move on within the next week.

    Good riddance.

This game is already largely successful and will continue to be without you.

  • @omega-131313 Well others seem perfectly happy with my post. If Rare wanted to limit the size of posts i'm sure they would have constructed the forums in a manner that reflected that.

  • @blackbeardluffy said in Disappointed at how uninspired/barebones it all is for a AAA game:

    @dimwitmegalodon
But i narrowed down your mentality aswell... Im a manager in a major retail company and you are just like one of my customers... i dont think im satisfied with this product and the way it works let me cry a lot to see if i can change it somehow! Sounds familiar ?

It's more like "this movie didn't turn out like the trailer hinted", not "I want to use this sandpaper as a face cloth and now my skin is bleeding and it's your fault"

  • @blackbeardluffy you have just earned all of my respect, couldn't have said it any better and as truthful

  • There is a serious lack of content. 15 hours in and I am sick to death of skeletons, droves of skeletons, harder to kill skeletons, gold skeletons, rusty skeletons, blue hat skeletons, red hat skeletons, skeleton quests, random skeletons, running away skeletons.....
    did i mention skeletons ?

  • @blackbeardluffy How do devs know what to work on if people don't criticize? Dancing around issues, patting people on the back isn't productive. The pirate generator is being changed, why is that, because people complained...

I am not demanding anything, I am just bemused at some of the design decisions made. Frantically running around after launch is crazy when many of these issues should have been worked out at planned.

The truth is many probably won't buy it and I thinks that's a crying shame. Without support at launch those DLC plans will likely dry up fast, and what might have been will never come to be.

  • @mr-chernobyl

    • Party System - Already confirmed for private parties coming.

    • Merchant Alliance - I agree with you here. We should have to ship items to other ports in a strict time frame from one outpost to another. This would almost guarantee that there is a ship on the server worth looting.

    • Having to complete objectives in a single sitting is pretty standard in a multiplayer game and even in some other games. (Dark Souls is a SP game that requires this. Once you log off everything but defeated bosses resets.)

    • Have you just sailed around without quests looking for messages in a bottle or other players yet with a crew your used to? The world is not empty there just needs a little extra like clues left by dead pirates on islands or something.

    • They can make NPC ships and they specifically said they are not doing it. Ever. They need to increase player count to compensate though.

    • While skeletons are the only npc enemy type there are like 4 different types at the moment. Makes forts interesting when there is a pond and the tree guys who get buffed in water keep running in. lol

    • The combat is just fine and actually very in depth when it comes to ship to ship combat and boarding.

    • Do you want more than 4 figure heads when you probably cant afford any right now? I have already made enough to buy one because our crew is efficient and have been playing since alpha. We are in the minority and I doubt solo players will get there any time soon.

    • Parrots and Monkeys confirmed already (Did you even do research before writing this?)

    • There is a story your just a new pirate and are not important enough to take part in it yet. Try increasing fame and rep.

    • Seeing as there were over a million unique players in the first 48 hours. This game is doing fine. Even if Half drop of that's still a huge player base.

    • From what I can tell your experience with this game is in small doses and either solo or with a lackluster crew. Find a crew that meshes with you and actually communicates with each other. Nothing is better than a perfectly efficient crew taking down another galleon without taking a shot. The game at this state is not about content its more about player experience with other players. I don't mind the lack of content right now because its MORE than enough to keep me busy until 60 days post launch when pets and legends are released.

Dont bother about him, seriously. He first responds like a brat. And when you replied he went b*****s and suddently cared ALOT what you had to say when he orignally didnt even read the post just the title. Its so pathetic its almost laughable and hes attitude here is that of a scorned child. Good luck bro.

  • @mr-chernobyl ok i stop in the first line from your post were you say ''simulation-fun'' its not a simulator its A GAMEEEE with good grahpics its not be necessary call that simulation-fun this game is for fun .
