No drop-in multiplayer...

  • The lack of drop-in multiplayer baffles me. Nothing is more annoying and frustrating than either having to wait around for your friends or having to leave the game entirely to get them into your game. Most of the time you have chests etc. and aren't able to leave immediately without risk of losing progress. It sucks.

This problem was solved in other games in like 2005. I understand that they talked about server issues, and having people drop-in/drop-out all the time, but other games figured it out. I imagine Rare can too.

  • Doesn't take too long to run to an outpost and turn stuff in. I've even dropped a chest or two to play with a friend. If we stop playing together because they have to go, I stay in the same session so that more people from my friends list can join me anytime by clicking "join game" on the friends list.

I believe you can drop in. We had a three man crew last night, one guy left for a while, and then we in invited him back to our game later. Popped back in no problem. Couple things...

    1. you invite them from the Xbox system not an in-game menu.
    2. I'm guessing no random players joined your crew because of server issues last night. In the betas If you have less people than your ship allowed in the beta it would put people with you. They quit and you got someone else.
  • @maia random people can join at any time is there's an open spot, so leaving a spot open doesn't work all the time. I've asked them to leave so friends can join a couple times already and while some people do leave, it doesn't happen every time. I still have to leave the game to get them in, and that only works if someone has left previously.

Losing progress should never be acceptable. Especially when the solution is something that other games have been doing for years.

  • There is. I have had plenty people spawn aboard my ship and in my crew. I just wonder if there is a way to add people to your crew when you encounter them in game.

I think the OP means setting sail in a solo sloop and having another player join them later on without restarting. I don't think you can do this, I have tried. It would be nice I admit but considering the difficulty they are having getting people efficiently into the game (it's only week 1) I'm not surprised that this isn't top of the list.

I think he is talking about friends only. Not randoms. Like a private crew option so you could comfortably play alone and invite people when they arrive online instead of having swap to a larger crew setting.

Has a lot to do with the individual server balance.

Say you started in the server on a solo sloop. Suddenly your party is ready to play. Does your sloop disappear and a Galleon pops out of the water?

What if every other solo sloop on the water does the same?

Seas get pretty busy, pretty quick.

Ah got ya. Im wondering about this as well.

  • @luke-pawlowski they are looking to sort a type of drop in drop out mechanic allowing for better private sessions.

Lets hope they do it openly so you can start solo on a sloop or 3 on a galleon and someone can join anyway so you arent locked to setting sail with 2 or 4 slots only for it to work.

  • @stem589 Spawning with a particular ship should limit the amount you can have. But if you start solo and want to add someone you should be able too. If you want to add someone to a crew of three you should be able to too.

Yeah, I would love it as a feature and I am hoping it will be added at some point. It does seem a bit like an oversight. With the excessively long load times in the final version of the game it is a real hassle having to back out and start a new session.
