I wondered if the reason for the lack (absent) of dreadful or eerie sea creatures might be the fact, that this could cause thalassophobia in this highly immersive game that's also directed to families and children.
Thalassophobia means the fear of the sea, the fear of the unknown and what lurks beneath. Yes, this fear exists.
The only dangerous thing in the deep ocean right now are sharks (because you just can't leave them out). They are still really vague about the kraken. The kraken might not even be in the game during launch.
What do you guys think? Could this really be a reason? Is the fact that rare wants to please every age group with this game the reason that they leave dreadful sea creatures out to not disturb anyone?
Is thalassophobia the reason why there are no dreadful sea creatures?

I don't know what the prevalence is of this phobia. But I would be surprised if this could have influenced Rare during development.
It's a natural human response to the unknown, similar to being in a dark forest at night and sitting at a campfire while knowing there's probably something in the dark woods.
@chrishayate I doubt it. Kraken is confirmed for launch, sharks are terrifying. My fear of the sea would not qualify as a phobia, and swimming in the deep water in SoT is still intense. I don't even like the prospect of flying over the ocean. If my plane is going to crash from 30,000 feet up, please let it be on dry land. I don't think any game has ever even attempted to cater to people with phobias.
@chrishayate What were all of those monstrous skeletons on Krakens fall? And are those in the game? If not I admit it's a bit goofy to show off the bones and none are in the game.

Did you see the Kraken concept art that was posted on Reddit yesterday?
Oh hellz no!
No, i haven't seen them. But now i have. Looks interesting, but everything is still so vague. I think the kraken will be an enemy that we won't see very often or only during special events. I'm talking more about the every day enemies like the sharks.
@lobofh sagte in Is thalassophobia the reason why there are no dreadful sea creatures?:
No, I think the reason is simply that all those criatures need to be modeled, skinned, animated and coded.
But this game is in development for over 4 years now. They did have time.
@RayFromJersey I could see why people are afraid of that. But a 'phobia' by definition is something totally different. I don't think a person with thalassofobia would even consider playing this game.

Those skeletons look extremely similar to the Kraken concept art I posted above.
@toonator Yeah, that was more what I was getting at. My fear of the ocean is fairly intense, but it isn't even close to phobia level. Someone with a phobia of the sea isn't likely to touch this game no matter what, scary sea creatures or not.

It's about causing thalassophobia. Imagine a child plays this and gets used to dreadful sea creatures lurking below the surface by playing this game every day.
But maybe i'm completely wrong here and a game can't cause that, i'm no psychologist, i'm just asking.@chrishayate Maybe playing a game could cause something. But people are exposed to millions of stimuli every day. To change your development course for an eventuality like this is unlikely in my honest opinion.
I for one hope they add Sirens. Not just friendly Mermaids, I mean Mermaids are a welcome sight most certainly. But...maybe I -WANT- my ship to be lead into rocks by beautiful singing voices eh? Take this for an example, they could just add the voices if they wanted to be lazy. Id be happy. The voices say make your screen go blurry or perhapes it fills with heart shapes (Gotta appeal to all ages now!) or gold, simply blinding your captain and crew like a drunk state when near a particular set of rocks or an isle, like the Sirens Song from Sinbad. Thats my two cents...
@ghost-0f-dawn completely normal to feel that way. It's a natural human response.
If you get panic attacks and your body completely shuts down however...
@rayfromjersey For sure, for sure. Like I said its no diagnosis, and if anything its minor. But I certainly do get the "Yep I need to get right out of this water now" shaky feeling sometimes.

Oh me too definitely, and I was in the Navy!

The skeletons are not below water and rather cute than monstrous. Also we haven't seen the kraken yet, at least not ingame.

I do.
There's nothing that starts up a cold sweat faster than accidentally falling off ship from lag or whatever else, and watching the ship take off with no islands whatsoever around you to even try to swim for. Emptiness below me, and all around me.
That said, I'll also be jumping in the water to see if kraken has a full body.

Rare are just waiting for the H.P Lovecraft license.
Haha, would be great.
But i don't think they would ever go all-out with creepy sea monsters in this game. This is just not the game for that, because, as i said, it has to fit every age group. It's supposed to be a family game.@roughleech03117 sagte in Is thalassophobia the reason why there are no dreadful sea creatures?:
@chrishayate it was rumored for more sea creatures to be in game
It was also rumored that the open beta was only 25% of the game at launch. There are tons of rumors. In this regard we can only talk about stuff that is actually there or officially announced.
Game developers take the "it's better to face your fears" approach to phobia. Rare certainly didn't make the sea cushy feeling. Sail to close to the edge of the world it turns red and things get scary. The kraken is going to be scaring the daylights out of people. Sharks jump scare ship wreck divers all the time. No, game developers don't shy away from scary things, if anything they lean into them, because conquering your fears is a large part of where real fun comes from.
@chrishayate well i believe if you watched their qna stream some people mentioned what you asked and they said they want to dive deeper into that stuff
@chrishayate omg I actually mentioned thallasaphobia to someone and they were like what. I can't play Subnautica at all and playing alone does mess with me

The ocean in Sea of Thieves is far from being scary right now. I'm talking about creepy giant squids, huge dangerous whale-like creatures (leviathan) that can do damage to your ship or huge maelstroms that can suck your ship in if you don't circumnavigate them.
These would be among the first things if i made a fantasy pirate game with ocean and ships.
