Cannons on Bow and Stern

  • Worked in real life, how come we don't have them in this game?

Would be great to shoot at a ship that you're pursuing or that's trailing you.

    Thoughts?

Edit (based on some comments): I like the idea of a grappling hook launcher facing forward and a small anti-personel Cannon facing rear, maybe not full-size cannons.

First, no disrespect but this is a dead horse topic if you are not aware.

Second: balance. Having them as options would destroy the sloop vs. galleon play.

  • My only worry would be that it would cause and imbalance between the sloops and galleons, although saying that I seem to remember that the fronts and rear facing cannons were smaller than the normal ones which might be okay but it might also mean you need a separate barrel of smaller cannon balls.

  • The only way this could be balanced is to add some sort of smaller cannon (swivel gun) on the bow that shoots anti- personell rounds. On the stern I wouldn't add any cannons. Instead I would opt for an explosive barrel dropping system of some sort...

  • Overall, no. It's a noob trap. The side guns are far easier to use for the sake of combat than a front facing one. Second, it would cause many fights to devolve into ramming fights, which are already pretty lame. Third, it would overwhelmingly favor the sloop over the galleon, since the sloop is easier to turn and control speed for. If a sloop ever got behind a galleon, there's really no hope for the galleon other than boarding. And this is in a time where sloops are already far stronger than galleons.

Though, I would actually be okay with this if it only fired a grappling hook.

  • Or you can learn to use your cannons on starboard and broadside like you should ;). Also I presume this is for the sloop because the gallion is very capable to utilize. It’s very simple to sink a gallion with a sloop, all you got to do is have skill and make sure they run out of supplies before you do. If there had been cannons on the bow and stern it takes the fun out of the game just allowing you to for an example to chase a gallion while peggin then in the stern which is unbalanced an unfair to as if the gallion would also to have cannons on the stern, the cannon can’t aim low enough to hit the sloop so basically it would just be a feature to harass gallions

  • @toonator or you can drop the explosive barrel in the water -_-

  • Not a good idea. For the sole reason it would seemingly eliminate the strategy of having to position your boat to use the cannons. Now having an accessory you can upgrade to drop barrels off the back would be cool.

That's true. And in hindsight, a dropping system on the stern would become a big sniper target. Maybe also some kind of swivel gun on the stern? In all honesty I wouldn't add any weapons on the bow/stern.

  • @toonator I’d keep the ships the way they are, all you gotta have is that skill in order to sink the gallion ;)

  • I had the the pleasure of testing another pirate game over the past year that included the bow and aft guns, and another that had the barrels you could drop off the aft end to damage a ship behind you. These were great features, but the games themselves could not measure up to this one. I’m sure Rare has studied both those games and at some point in the future might consider adding them if there was sufficient demand and it was feasible for them to incorporate them into the game.

There were also small guns on the sides and bow that were only used to damage a ships sails to slow it down. The other ship had to repair the damage by sending a crew member into the rigging.

Are these elements necessary for this game. Not really.

  • @wolff34 it’s too late to change anything now, they’ve committed to the models they have put into the scale tests and betas. There’s no sense in changing what they already have, and honestly the ships are perfect the way they are and there’s no sense in changing it.

  • @Fal-BlackFlame
Fully agree. That was just for infomation.

With all due respect this is a topic that has been debated already, more then once. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong in asking the community for anything that might improve or solve some issues with the game but they already made up their mind on this. In all honesty and friendly manner I hope people will see this messege and won't make another post on this. By now I think it's also safe to say that the majority don't want the bow/stern cannons. Worked in real life sure, but for the sake of a better gameplay feeling, I'm sorry to say but it's not a good idea.

If you want more or a deeper info on this, feel free to check one of my replies in another thread about this issue, starting with "Fully agree": https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/37515/3-player-ship-model-included/111?page=4

  • I like the idea of ship upgrades that assist the way that you play, but only at the cost of being unable to use any the other upgrades, so you only get 1, for example:

1 - Bow Chase Gun - For the PVP player who enjoy the thrill of the chase, a front mounted cannon.

2 - Stern Chase Gun - For players who want to repel a PVP player whilst on the run, a rear mounted cannon.

3 - Side Netting - For the adventurous player on the move, side nets that collect floating barrels in the water, collecting the resources into the currently unusable lower deck barrels for players to use while on the move.

4 - Naval Ram - For the brave and the bold, a Naval Ram that prevents forward damage from ramming attacks while increasing damage to ships rammed.

5 - Increased Storage - For those in the long haul, increased storage supplies to store more cannon balls, wooden planks and bananas.

6 - Secure holdings - For those who need some extra security, adds a crew locked compartment that prevents non crew members from obtaining loot, forcing opposing ships to sink the vessel to gain your items.

7 - Forward Mounted Spear Gun - A weapon that attaches itself to a ship, preventing it from gaining ground while allowing the shooter to reel in the vessel. Takes considerable time to load and for ships hit to hold F to remove the hook.

8 - Swivel Guns - Smaller cannons that have limited damage against ships but are deadly to players and skeletons. Great for clearing out smaller PVE enemies without wasting cannonballs.

9 - Heavy Munitions - Advanced weapon supplies giving the ships crew a heavier version of the blunderbuss that consumes 2 weapons slots and consumes cannon balls, providing players boarding ships the option to inflict damage to a ship without relying on their own to open fire. Would also have the option for small scale hand grenades that consume 1 weapon slot.

10 - Captains Parrot - A parrot that can be released after anchoring to find random / hidden items on an island. Useful for finding a players hidden chest, random chest/trinket/bottle spawns.

11 - Fewer supplies - Decreased supplies on board a vessel but gives the vessel increased handling and speed.
