Sea of Thieves weighs only 9GB?

  • I am downloading the game and I think that weighs very little. Someone knows something?

  • Just a pre-download mate, might not be the whole thing. If it is, then it's super optimized because I think the betas were more.

  • Yes, the standard Xbox One download is around 9GB. Xbox One X and PC Are around 20 as they pack higher resolution textures and detail.

  • I'm not a professional but here's my explanation... Most likely 2 reasons: compression and a lack of different types of textures.

Compression: a lot of a game's storage size is based on how compressed the files are. Compression allows good performance and smaller file size, but hardware has to be decent in order to process it at a decent rate. This game is strictly for today's generation of hardware, so they didn't have to decompress it for older hardware.

Textures: SoT's entire setting looks 100% the same. There's only one big map on one world. Everything has that same cartoony art style. The lack of different textures helps keep the game size down a lot. This also explains why the Xbox One X version is double the size because of the 4k textures.

  • Hello,

I wonder about how Xbox one will fare, say 2 or 3 years from now as content gets added... It will most likely be a limiting factor in terms of development, an average pc could run 2 instances of Xbox one S.O.T at the same time.

Hopefully Rare handles that well also!

    Cheers,

  • Probably like World of Warcraft, only need to download the world and everything else is on their servers. Also they probably reuse a lot of assets.

  • Compression, PC Version is bigger however it needs to run on many different built systems and builds. Extremely complicated compared to Xbox which can run the same on million of devices.

It looks like everything is server side and we are pretty much viewing the game through a window. So not much is required except graphics and any affects that would take forever to download.

  • @ghost-0f-dawn PC version is 60GB!!!
Sixty haha. I’ve been looking at getting it tonight on PC about trying it on Xbox game pass first. Bargain for £1.39 for a month and get to try this out 👍🏻

  • @layleeloo Homie its not 60GB is 18.9 GB. 100% sure

  • @July18delta12
    Yes.
    Optimised well.
    Xbox non 4k assets = 8.1GB
    Xbox 4k assets = 18.9GB
    Pc = 19GB

  • @samoclarkey ?? Been on multiple websites tonight and many are saying saying 60GB of space required on PC?? A couple have said 20 and several saying 60. Who knows? If I like it on XB I’ll just get it on PC regardless of size 👍🏻

  • I just checked it on my PC, the Windows 10 App Store shows that it needs 19,6GB, 60GB sounds more then unlikely, even with many content updates.

  • @layleeloo seeing as it is PlayAnywhere, it should be available on your PC now anyway :)

  • For what it’s worth a game like monster hunter world is only 13gb on my Xbox one X. Pre rendered cutscenes are usually a big part of a game having a large file size. Gears of war 4 has a 100gb plus download because of all the 4K videos etc.

18gb for sea of thieves on my X is perfectly normal for a game of its type. Fallout 4 was only 18gb at launch if i remember correctly too.

  • @layleeloo you dont need to get it on PC,

    i preordered my through xbox.....

then i logged into the windows store on my PC and the game was already purchased. i just downloaded it and installed it.

love the fact i can play on both PC and Xbox without having to re purchase

    win a ding

  • @layleeloo Required yeah but the downloads are what I said I work at Microsoft :)

  • @blessed-karma Ah really? I didn’t know you could do that. Even better then! When I want a long play can be comfy on sofa on the XB but when I want it to look and run as good as it can all maxed out I can use PC. Best of both worlds. Thanks for the heads up! 👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻

  • @triheadedmonkey Thank you for the tip :)

  • @layleeloo Totally agree,
i played the Alpha and Beta on xbox and loved it,
then i upgraded my graphics card and got a new SSD and Monitor for my PC and on release installed SOT.
looks AMAZING and runs flawlessly with max graphics.

but i am not much of a PC gamer so after 2 or 3 hours of play my left hand started to cramp so i quit, turned on the xbox and then sat on the couch playing for a while longer with my feet up

hope it goes smoothly for you
Good luck on the open seas

  • @blessed-karma could always use your controller on your PC ;)

although, to be honest, sometimes it is nice to just kick back on the sofa rather than sat at a desk!
