Ship Combat Tactics - Video Series

  • Put together a series of short videos, 3 to 5 minutes long, talking about about Naval Combat and how to approach the different kinds of fights you can get in at sea.

Part 1 covers the basics. Cannons, clubhauling, crossing the T, things like that.
Part 2 goes into a bit more detail on tactics, and talks more about boarding.
Part 3 deals with fighting off galleons in a 2-man sloop.
Part 4 is about escaping a galleon in a solo sloop.
And Part 5 is about chasing down sloops in a galleon.

The credits for the footage used in each part are in the video descriptions.

Keep in mind this this stuff is largely theorycrafting, as even though I watched a frankly unreasonable about of the game for the past couple of months, I didn't do any actual playing until the open beta, and didn't get into enough fights to back up all my ideas.

P.S. Couldn't figure out how to post this in the Guides & Tips category...

  • @toboshii It was actually a well put together video

  • @toboshii nice videos dude there really help full

  • i hope the club hauling part mentions how its the worse thing to do in battle

After watching part 3, Ill just say this, ignore everything with club hauling, it only works vs inexperienced crews. Nicely made videos. Some info is from the inexperienced and will just guarantee you lose the battle vs an experienced crew.

  • @nanach In my opinion, it's only a problem to use in a galleon, or in close quarters. If you've got enough room to get the anchor up before the enemy ship is on you, or if you're using it as a chase opener, I think it can be very effective. That said, I maybe wasn't as cautionary as I should've been in the videos.

  • @toboshii Clubhauling really shouldn't be used. It's an extremely novice tactic that only works against other novices. For instance, clubhauling to turn 90 degrees on a chasing galleon is bad because they can see this and react by simply moving to the side and raising their sails so that they are positioned with cannons facing your ship's stern or bow. And now that you are anchored here, they can even force you to respond by raising anchor and moving directly into more of their shots by positioning themselves in front of the bow.

Almost anytime a clubhaul would be useful, it would just be better to raise all sails and turn. It's honestly not even that much slower if your team has drilled it, and it opens up more options such as red-caping the enemy ship (dropping sail right as they try to board so they fly past you), or pivoting with them as they angle past you.

Remember that tag-teaming the sails is significantly faster than doing them individually. Two people on the front sail, and then those two people moving to the mid sail, that would be more than twice as fast as just having one on the front and one on the mid.

  • Nicely done. Have you done one for hand to hand combat too?

  • @honusdan I have not, but this gentleman has! https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/33162/training-with-subzarr-advanced-swordplay-guide

  • @cpt-kazuto This is really good to know. I'm planning on doing a second round of these a few weeks after launch when I have some actual experience under my belt, and comments like this are really helpful for learning what to do in these fights.

  • @toboshii there some things to take in mind. Yes the galleon is always bad to do it in, unless its to emergency park, or just try and club park on a dock for fun.

Sloop can raise it quickly, but vs an experienced crew, they will still get aboard.

Now in the situation where your running from a galleon. They will catch you very quickly unless going into the wind. If you're going into the wind then you pull away from them very slowly. If you club haul at this point with enough room, it means that your changing a coarse into the wind. Remember their ship is also at its slowest, so its maneuvering ability is higher. It will turn without far overshooting your ship, and now its got the wind to its advantage. The best approach I've found vs galleons giving chase is to use the islands to your advantage, try to get them to run aground in the shallows, or force a turn they cant make with their current heading, the point is to get behind the ship, you had that part right, but should also avoid its front. Once the enemy ship is stuck, impaired, or the helmsman has become confused on what to do, they become easy to take down. The key is to somehow cripple their movements and the crew losing their composure so you can take advantage of your maneuvering. If done right its almost like sneaking up on a ship unprepared.

  • @toboshii No prob. The video series is pretty good as it is. You're definitely above average in your knowledge. The anchoring just stuck out to me as someone who has already poured hundreds of hours into the game.

I'd experiment with raising all sails a lot. It's really, really effective to just sit in the ocean perfectly still and just pivot with ships that want to move around and shoot you. Remember that you don't have any momentum to counter-balance like this, so your shots should be steadier than theirs. Also makes sloops have zero chance against you as their maneuverability isn't much faster than a stationary galleon's turn.

  • @toboshii Really nice work. Your title edits (the fades) are well done. As a heads up you misspelled "Combat" in video 4. EDIT: Just went back and looked, all of your titles say "COMAT"

  • Awesome Video mate hope there is more

  • @toboshii Well done. Needed something to kill the time between now and launch. Thanks mate!

  • @Toboshii Toboshi, aka the best SpyParty game caster in the history of game casters!

I saw the name and I couldn't believe it was you : )

You were one of the reasons I got into SpyParty and I am glad you are doing well!

I don't think we ever met or spoke on SpyParty but I would watch the casts you would do of the tournaments and such. Tobo is a good guy everyone and he deserves your support even if you are an advanced player!
