  • One of the videos where they took questions mentioned fishing and he made a face like "that's ridiculous", while the others thought it was a good idea. I get that he's the studio head and all, but when the community is overwhelming in it's support of the idea, and the designers think it's a good idea...it might be time to get off the high horse.

  • @blackbeard-lufy send him some red wine before pitching this idea to him again. He'll reconsider 😁

  • I would like perhaps hunting with harpoon, fishing could be part of the merchants alliance quests too, but perhaps it's too much work for a not very "pirate" job.

  • "Not part of the pirate experience" ?
Well, running after piglets and chickens neither and yet...
And i'm not sure bananas was your typical pirate meal.

  • @lobofh Their mantra is playing how you'd like. Withstanding the fact that fishing is most definitely "pirate", we should have the choice to create our own story.

  • I want to fish with a net or pole or spear.
You should have to cook it to eat or keep raw to sell.

  • @blackbeard-lufy
How do you envision one actually doing the fishing in a game like this?

  • @little-squash
1.) Cast fishing rod into water.
2.) Wait for bobber to get pulled under.
    3.) Reel in fish.

I'm not looking for a complicated and/or intricate system.

  • Roasting fish on the beach and drinking grog with friends sounds pirate to me.
Fishing would just be another activity to do while hanging on the beach.

    Competitive fishing.

  • I wouldn't take Craig's comment too seriously guys. The vibe I got from their response was that this is something they are definitely gonna add down the road. Keep in mind they want to cycle in/out trading companies to keep things mixed up a bit.

I'd wager the Gold Hoarders and Order of Souls are relatively permanent staples on that front, but bet the Merchant Alliance role as the third trading company will get cycled. It might very well be a fishing trading company one day, sending you on voyages to track down, catch, and return specific fish.

They could also add it as an npc-based quest instead or after they replace the trading company with something else. Lots of room for fishing to get into the game. For a GaaS, ya don't wanna just blow all your ideas for launch and then have nothing left for players to enjoy for the next several months!

  • @blackbeard-lufy
So would this basically be a way of acquiring an additional in game commodity - fish - that could also be used as food instead of bananas? Instead of finding bananas in a barrel on an island, you can pull fish out of the water every so often?

^^ Aim, cast, and wait. Trigger to reel in. As much as I generally dislike quick time style events, I'd be okay with them for larger catches (like sharks).

  • Surely the devs shouldn't be speaking about "the pirate experience" but instead, "the pirate era experience".
If we have quests for merchants (the opposite of a pirate), that's great, it's something for the less PvP-interested players to do.
Should this not be broadened with more small features (such as fishing) that could encourage different types of game-play & create more to do?

  • Im not sure catching chickens, pigs or snakes is 'very piratey', but thats ok though

  • @little-squash Sure. Good ideas.

  • No but catching pigs and chickens is....

Until another player shoots them while they are fishing. :P

  • I think fishing would add a cool element. You'd be fishing while keeping an eye out for enemy pirates.

I think it would be cool if it were not a quest though. You would just randomly fish for fun and for the health benefits eating the fish provide.

Heck, maybe even make the fish you catch have something to do with help defeating the Kraken. You can do it without fish, but perhaps it's slightly (only a tiny bit) more helpful.

Since this is an open world, not everything has to be a quest.

  • Capturing pigs and chickens is apart of the pirate experience as well?

  • Pretty sure Craig as the Head is just going along with the running joke that he frowns on their gud ideas

  • @m3r1zl340k Bad joke.

I hope that's the case. It would be strange to me for one person to be so out of sync with the rest of the team.

  • Come on Joe, make this happen... we want to fish!

I have to give a shoutout to @MysticDragon297 and his great work on his concept

Pay some folks some OT and get it in for launch!

  • Fishing is really boring thing. Imho

  • Honestly, some of the most fun I had in AC:Black Flag was harpooning sea creatures. Nothing like trying to take on Ol' Moby in a dingy with harpoon tooth picks lol....Even my wife had fun going after a huge hammer head.

  • just going to leave this here....
Fishing concept: New Merchant Alliance Harpoon

  • I think it would be great too, we have sleep & sit emote so I think sitting and fishing would work. Fishing off jetties & deep sea fishing (chicken as bait?) Boom barrels could be used though I'm sure even in Pirate circles that would be frowned upon. (Kraken company excluded)

Maybe it would cause reduced player interaction but I don't think harpoon fishing/boat attack would.

  • The only fishing I'd like to see in this game is harpooning. That is true pirate fishing.

Anything that pulls people out of engaging on the high seas and reducing player interaction should be avoided.

  • @blackbeard-lufy
Don't look at it like that, or say things like to fire him. They're people too :) Different people have different jobs, that prioritize different things. That answer was a perfect representation of how these things collide. Dont focus on what he says, focus on how to change his mind.

I would like fishing too, despite knowing plenty of people who wouldnt enjoy it. How to add fishing in a way that is appealing to everyone? Or to make it more than sitting stagnant like it is in other games. And not as controversial as whaling, or too gruesome as that doesnt fit the game.

I had two ideas on the subject, as a part of the merchants alliance you could be sent to find fish species with a fish bowl. Perhaps even exotic species that are larger ?

Or an additional trading company that solely focuses on providing fish, and so they send you on voyages to different locations where certain fish can be found.

Having to get bait, and then some sort of fishingrod or fishnet to capture the fish at certain locations. As you would progress, you would catch bigger fish worth more as they provide more.

By no means are my ideas perfect, far from it. But I think if we want fishing to be added we should focus on giving feedback, ideas, suggestions. Make Craig, thegameboss, duncan change his mind. Let us slap eachother in the face with fish Craig, that is the piratey thing to do.

  • @erinom3 It was a joke matey. They're obviously not going to fire the head-honcho. I shouldn't have to change his mind when it is one of the very most requested features from the community and not game-breaking in any way, shape, and/or form.

  • I think it would be a missed opportunity if they didn't add fishing. You could have harpoon fishing and regular fishing rod fishing. For the bigger fish you just carry them onboard as you would any chest or box but for smaller fish you have to deposit X amount into a box before it is tradeable.

Maybe even add another scenario for seagulls to fly over an area like with sunken ships. You see seagulls flying over an area you sail there but instead of barrels or a sunken ship you see a bunch of small fish trying to jump out of the water to escape sailfish or sharks?

  • In Zelda Wind waker we were able to fish. For what I know, Link isn't a fisherman. Same in Black Desert Online so what is the problem about fishing in a pirate game?

In fact, the first time I saw seagulls in the air, I thought it was a fish spot like in BDO.

And if Pirates stay the majority of their time on sea, it's difficult to not think about them eating fishs.

Please Rare, just make something about fishing in this marvelous game.

And who remember the pleasure of Sundays morning in WoW?

  • @blackbeard-lufy
Well, if he's still of the opinion he is. Then clearly we should, right ?
He might be the one to think tea crates are piratey, how ever will we convince him of fishing ?! Haha
