Its all about giving gold more porpuse. Horizontal Progression Adaptation.

  • There it comes, the horizontal progression again. Im sorry to bother you guys with this topic again, but I really want to express myself about it.

I love the idea of horizontal progression, I just think that the treasures are a little undervalued in the game.

I found myself battling and trying to escape from another ship for a REALLY long time just to protect the goods that me and my friends gathered, until I realized it was porpuseless. There was almost no reason to keep on fighting those more experienced players, we gave up, sunk and lost the treasures that we spent hours gathering. After all, I didn't wanted to buy that jacket that much. And that got me thinking that gold could have a little bit more of a use in the game.

People are always complaining about gaining advantage in combat over the newbie pirates, but the point is that not everything have to be related to combat advantage.

I mean, there are other ways to make the money more valuable.

One is by being able to buy expensive ship modifications like:

    • A canoe support, for traveling back and forth from islands with treasure and stuff (even for fleeing from a battle). Stuff like this won't make you win a battle, also it could be extremely fragile and it also should be possible to buy more than one (one for each side at least).
    • More depth on ship customization like changing raillings, wheel, lamps, captain's chamber decoration, map's table style, cannons style, etc. As ships are more easily noticeable than players, I think its a fundamental part of the horizontal progression. Also, it shall be really great to change when you are tired off of your ship.

On "Inn-side Story #25 - Customisation" video, the devs mention a post-launch update about having your own ship, I hope they are bringing in stuff like what I'm suggesting, and who knows, other types of boats to buy? (PLEASE)

If that is the case, then players who already had much money would be able to buy too much things when the update comes out, and that breaks the point of progression. But what if the things you buy for your ship could only be bought with Gold Bars? This exchanging of Gold and Gold Bars could be dynamic and expensive. It would make money more valuable and therefore treasures more valuable. Also, some kind of mechanic to prevent grinding would be welcomed.

Buying specific guns and/or ammo that are more effective on skeletons but useless on players would make the money more valuable.

Being able to buy anything that will bring you a new and exciting mechanic, will definetively make the money more valuable a give more porpuse to most of the existing features of the game without having to unbalance the game.

I know there are just a few simple ideas, but I really want to know what you guys think about that!!

Also, the Sniper Rifle needs a zoom sensitivity slider. Rare, please fix.
Btw, the broken scope lens is funny but I wish I could have a normal aim on the scope by buying a different skin, can that be considered an advantage?

  • I agree. Without any reward system or sense of progression / achievement. The game becomes boring and repetitive within hours.

I agree. Without any reward system or sense of progression / achievement. The game becomes boring and repetitive within hours.

Only if you play it like you play any other AAA titel out there.

This game is fun and making everyone laugh I group with...this is a game that is simply ment to be played on a friday night with some friends and allways results in "do you remember..." stories everyone is fond of.

If you handle it like a Skyrim or like a Destiny...you will play it for 2 weeks maybe, for the honeymoon phase (as its called). But if you simply handle it like a playground you visit with friends, it will be a funny experience each time you log into it.

    Imho.

  • @kustho I look at this like a massive sandbox I can build my own adventures in. The problem with many games is the sole focus on progression IMO. It gets in the way of fun to be had and replaces it with obsession over stats. With a game like this where everyone is on a level playing field your stats rely on your personal skill in game which I love.

  • @kustho I agree with you, but that's not exactly my point. The game sure will always be fun, but being able to be introduced to new mechanics allows you to do new stuff over time, its not about getting everything asap just to become the best pirate, its about having even more fun for a longer period of time. Also, if you care about the treasure you're carrying, then the game gets a little bit more exiciting :D

  • @bloodfrenzy187

    I agree 100%

But many players want that carrot (called progress) in front of them to keep them playing. Like the guys in WoW that stand next to a bank all night so that everyone sees them in their shiny armor.

Many older players love the "back to the roots" feeling of this as I do.

  • @bloodfrenzy187 That's true! That's why I was talking about adding and acquiring some cool stuff, not game changing stuff. It makes the game dynamic and even more fun.

  • @onyxhill

For me...and I speak for me alone...it is REALLY exiting.

I get goosebumps when I see sails at the horizon...and double so when I have chests on my vessel.

When I get engaged in PvP...or engage from my side (that happens, specially when I'm borred) I know that it is my skill as a player that makes the difference between win and lose.

EDIT: even in PvE...I am stressed when I play it, I hurry and allways watch the horizon. This creepy feeling of allways having to look behind my back...thats odd...but it is more then enough to make me addicted to it.

    Strange....I know.

  • We need items that provide small enhancements that can be purchased from merchants. Nothing stackable or greatly game affecting but something like an eye patch that lets you swim 20% longer under water or a hat that makes bananas grant 15% more health would hugely help with character motivation and customisation.
These upgrades could also be applied to ships, so having a crew member with the storm compass means that every now and then the ships compass works briefly in a storm.
Nothing game breaking but enough to give players something to work towards.
