While playing the beta I got a chest that could be carried that held up to 50 cannon balls. It was empty but we filled it up. However when playing later in the day we never got it again?... Will these be random or purchasable in the game? It was awesome.

Randomly found in the wild, yes.
Purchasable, kind of. They're part of higher level merchant alliance voyages where you need to fill them up and deliver them to an outpost. If nothing changes at release since the beta, you can just cancel the voyage and keep the chest repeatedly.

You found it on a message in the Bottle. Go talk to the merchant he gives you a crate you need to fill up with 50cannonballs
Then give it back to the merchant to earn money and rep@rayfromjersey yes i hope they fix that I also exploited it occasionally you can carry hundreds of cannon balls and bananas and beat anyone in battle as when you are both skilled it always comes down to whoever runs out of supplies first
@the-lake-bubba we got one last test sessions, got the chest, then cancelled the quest so we could have extra cannonballs💣😏
I do hope they make it so any item can be turned into the Merchants for money. Right now I think at least animals will only get you money if they're turned into the correct outpost. So say you steal a chicken off of a galleon (which I did), I found that when I turned it in nothing happened because I had no way of knowing which outpost it was supposed to go to. Especially since I hadn't seen the other crews' quest.
@niepel1337 My group found the quest for one in a message-in-a-bottle. Then we went back and got one from the merchant.
