Incentives and end game

  • @glacefrostclaw they are selling a product. If they want people to buy it they should be upfront about everything they’re getting for their money. So far all they’ve shown is three different fetch quests and the only ingame rewards for your playtime are cosmetic skin changes of the same equipment everyone has and is stuck with for the entire game (that’s not just from the beta, I’m talking about everything they’ve shown in their yt videos as well) With game mechanics and content like that I’d expect this to be a cheap mobile game you play as you wait in the airport terminal, or a F2P game like team fortress 2.

  • @lordmasterrazor team fortress...hmmm for the many hrs of enjoyment that game brought me compared to some of the c**p I have spent more on, 60$ (it's closer to 90$ in Canadian bucks) for it would have been cheap when it launched.

  • If you want a buffy vertical progression game there are plenty out there for you. Sea of Theives is not going to be that, and that is a good thing. Ubisoft in fact is making a very vertical pirate game due to come out soon, Skull and Bones, maybe you should play that game.

This worries me a lot. This equality thing is detrimental to depth if you ask me. I've don't see myself grinding for cosmetics beyond a first set of clothes.

Yeah you will get bored quick then. Luckily there will never be vertical progression 👍 and even if there was it wouldn’t be for atleast 6 months, that will give me plenty of play time before o part ways 😂

This game is going to be so awesome. The best part is that anything vertical will take so long to come in that I would probably already be done with it, along with others

@rosinok I just hope there is ship customization planned outside of cosmetic, theres so much fun to be had there. It not just that, the world looks amazing but feels static. I can't light fires, I can touch shrubbery. I can imagine a lot of hidden stuff when I explore these islands, but if I never find anything outside of markers that are used for riddle quests then that's gonna catch up eventually. Imagination only goes so far.

All those are good ideas, except the first one. Thank god the ship will only be cosmetic for months 👍

  • The upgrades will always be cosmetic. There is no plan to make this a vertical game, ever. This game is about playing with people, not about becoming more powerful.

Equality is not the issue. Reality is.

Anyone miss the days when games weren't casual? Where effort actually mattered. What if the clothing and cosmetics that I want is dirt cheap and I obtain it right from the beginning. What do I do now? What is the purpose of playing then? This game needs to allow us to set goals or we will quickly lose our will to play. You see if gear actually mattered, we'd go for more expensive things, but unfortunately gear doesn't matter so we'll get what we like. Our goals become limited and there isn't any incentive to do anything else.

It's like the developers think we're going to be excited playing dress up and creating outfits all day. Lets see how this goes. Hundreds of customers are watching the release of the game and the reviews that will come out of it. I can only assume the open beta has many people worried with what the game has to offer. If people begin saying it's just like the final beta, this game may sink. Everyone who cares about the game should worry.

The main problem is people think they need to buy stuff instead of just playing and enjoying the game.

And people want vertical progression because they aren’t any good. If they need an advantage then ok. I don’t need one because I already know I am better than anyone who needs an advantage 👍

What kind do you have in mind?

It not just that, the world looks amazing but feels static.

That's reality and yet here we are having things to do. Imagination and hope helps us keep our sanity lit.

I can't light fires, I can touch shrubbery. I can imagine a lot of hidden stuff when I explore these islands, but if I never find anything outside of markers that are used for riddle quests then that's gonna catch up eventually.

Vertical progress catches up quickly as well eventually. All that matters is how much stuff we have and how many ways we can interact with that stuff.

    Imagination only goes so far.

True and yet that is what allows us to develop everything. Without inductive reasoning, there would be no imagination. This is what we have to imagine things.

    • Something silly would be nice.
    • Maybe something adorable too.
    • Something that tells about the mood of the mate or what they like.
    • Blood type is important to some cultures to present so why not an item that honours this?
    • Something with tactical value for sure.
  • @trenix90 I think the game has plenty to offer at launch as of right now and they intend to keep updating it. I remember games like this where it isnt a "destiny" style game grind for strong weapons. I think that they will continue to surprise us all in the future, keep faith you guys, lets worry when it is warranted, lets wait until the game is released.

  • I think there's a middle ground. Somewhere where any upgrades or items you get will both be a help and a detriment.
There's no reason there have to be any straight up upgrades, say, larger sails for more speed. They could be smaller, like have your cannons below deck, with higher damage, but less view and less aiming.
Same goes for basic pvp. Obviously, games, where those lvl 100 diamond armored 20-foot tall sword go around 1 hitting everyone, isn't cool, but having little things like different weapons that act differently (NOT BETTER, DIFFERENTLY) to suit your playstyle.
Maybe your not the best at pvp, so you buy yourself a battleax, so instead of being fancy you can just rush your enemies and hope for a win, or maybe you want a knife that can stab fast, allowing you to do higher sustained dps, at the loss of range.

I think all we want are customizations that MATTER. Obviously, there are some 10-year-olds out there who just want to dress up like pirates and prance around for hours, but there are other people who want to customize they're pirate and ship to suit how they play.

All I hope is that when the game comes out, we don't all end up with identical weapons, making every engagement the same as the last.

    Thirty-seven in April, actually.

And what if this IS the dress-up and "prance around" game? After all, those 10 year olds (and 37 year olds) deserve games just as much as you, don't they?

Are you sure this game might not just be a little more for them than for you? :p

  • @casesugar401098 That would be really cool. I had both during thw 2 consecutive scale tests that they carried gear over for. But I could never confirm if they did anything. I wasn't very good at being the treasure hunter.

But now that you mention it, once i did start looking, I had a surprising number of "clunks" on the first shovel full. whaddayakno!

  • A big problem I noticed is players aren't used to playing for the sake of the experience; everyone expects there to be some preset goals you need to reach, or some structure you need to progress through.

Sea of Thieves really doesn't offer any sort of "true" progression; it's a game that's based entirely around players who keep coming back because of the stories they tell their friends and the adventures they had, not because they got to the next level or got a shiny new cosmetic.

  • @rosinok
I just have a lot of fun sailing around finding treasure and out smarting other pirates!
