Buttons and general control scheme TLC

  • On the keyboard, sometimes to talk to someone its 'F' and sometimes its 'R' (example to talk to the gold hoarder)

Same thing when you want to exit something, sometimes its 'F', sometimes its 'Esc' (example exiting from talking to someone, exiting the map table, exiting a clothing chest)

Sometimes to drop something, its 'R', sometimes its 'X' (example dropping bananas and things into barrels, and dropping chests)

On the pad buttons are linked to the same thing, 'b' drops chests, exit out of stuff and drop stuff into barrels. On the keyboard its a random-button-hoedown.

General buttons TLC (tender-lovin-care) is storing bananas/cannonballs/planks whether they are in your hand or not. Kinda half way there with the cannons, you dont actually need cannonballs equipped to reload cannons while on it anymore but cant reload when off it unless physically holding a ball in your hand. Whether its in your inventory or not is all that should matter.

Generally picking stuff up, grabbing stuff like ladders and reloading feel buggy because it doesnt 'buff' what youve press (hopefully people know what I mean), so if you press the button slightly too early before grabbing a ladder or reloading a cannonball, it just completely ignores you even though youre holding that button down. Feels budget.

Radial menu on the pc, no need for a mouse curser at all, just moving the mouse in that general direction should be enough. (e.g. holding 'q' and a quick swipe down should be enough to grab a shovel out, not displaying my taskbar and loading up netflix with my mouse curser).

There are other sloppy things as well like you cant sometimes quickly pull out a banana after using a sword for example, you do it slightly too early, it completely ignores you, It should pull out the banana after the sword animation completes rather that having to keep spamming the buttons to get a banana out

Absolutely loving the final beta though and cant wait for the game to release. But these things ruin the flow of general tasks and has that 'clunky' feel people express. It just doesnt feel like smooth control inputs, feels buggy and budget.

I know its a long post but I hope other people know what I mean, little things that could be rectified for quality of life in this game, would make a big difference. Nothing more feels frustrating when pressing the inputs to quickly do something but it just refuses to :)

Ive seen streamers trying to quickly reload and fire cannons and there is an awkward pause where theyre holding the reload button, but nothing is happening, ruins flow

  • Anyone know what Im talking about or agree? or is it tl:dr xD

  • @uvg-reign

I hear ya loud and clear. I prefer a controller for this reason. Plus, there's hardly no competition between buttons when it comes to a controller while keyboard has them all spread out or too close.

    Edit:

Radial wheel: In other words players would benefit from such wheel feature present in Diablo 3 game for example.

Commands: Button commands should never compete with one another unless it was about attack patterns assigned to different buttons (again a Diablo 3 reference).

    Edit2:

I've made a lot longer posts, LOL. Did you know that each topic posted here can hold over 36k letters? ;3

  • On the money with the radial menu on pc.

  • I play on PC.

It toke me about...maybe 2 days to get the routine. Now...I just play without looking on the keyboard anymore.

  • @mythicalfable Ive never played Diablo 3, might have to give it a look.

Didnt know you could write over 36k letters, dont think most people read more than 36 letters though sometimes lol

  • @uvg-reign

That's why my MegaThreads tend to not get readers as much as I'd like. Viewers for sure, but not readers. Especially when there is no TL;DR section. ROFL

The console version has an inventory wheel system in place that works similar to what you described above.

  • Agreed, and I wonder if we were the same reddit people conversing about this :)

  • @paladin-m109a6 Soz, I dont use reddit :(

  • @uvg-reign ah, gotcha. I had a reddit convo with someone who brought your side into it as well, it was a funny bit of deja Vu for me as all of your points are also valid and very similar to this as they're QoL-centric

  • Sorry, spammy, but here's a potential fix for the taskbar "bleed-through"

That was one of my biggest peeves, I'll be trying this on launch if they haven't fixed by then.

  • @paladin-m109a6 Feel free to post anything to reddit thatll contribute from my thread, the less we can make this 'port but not a port' feel good on the KB and mouse the better

  • @kustho @UVG-Reign Same, when i played for the first time it felt clunky and slow. Then i just got used to it, and now i have no problem at all with it.
But getting used to something doesn't mean it has no problems.
I agree with all the problems/solutions above, and if they get corrected the better. If not, it makes no difference after a day of play

  • I would like for Q and E to work as a toggle for the equipment/map radial. Whenever I hold down a key for too long in this game, it seems to do some weird stuff in windows, it's like the game loses focus and is partial minimized or something. Quite annoying. Being able to have greater control with pc would be nice. Making hotkeys for everything without requiring radial would be nice.

And a separate hotkey/radial for novelty items like instruments mug etc, I don't like having to go through Q.

Also, I think many people would agree that escape to close any dialogue is more intuitive than pressing f etc. Especially when reading the map. Pretty much everyone I've played with makes a comment about that.

  • These are excellent points. I couldn't agree more. These are some really simple changes that would make the game feel so much more intuitive to use.

  • totally agreeing that this feels more like a beta with bugs and halfassed UI/keybinding.

just to add to the list of issues: the reload animations and no animation cancel lets me redo thinks a couple of times if not executed precisely (and by that I mean wait till the whole animation is over, srsly try to reload the sniper its ridiculous)

also to go to the submenues to, for example, equip your watch you have to press 'F' in addition to opening the menu, which I cant rebind ...

  • @uvg-reign Thank you for thinking to post about this horrible issue. So many keys to virtually perform the same objective is ridiculous (R = unload planks to barrel, X = unload chest to gold hoarder).

So many times I accidentally hit "T" instead of "R" when trying to load cannons and I'm text chatting a series of "ttttttttttttttt"s or "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"s instead.

The cannons could/should auto load like hand held firearms and only require a different key to unload if desired.

I've seen supposed hotkeys for PC but they fail to work for me. Maybe someone else will have luck with them.
    Hotkeys
    Draw Primary Weapon 1
    Draw Secondary Weapon 2
    Equip Fruit 3
    Equip Cannonball 4
    Equip Wood Plank 5

    Equip Spyglass 8
    Equip Tankard 9
    Equip Pocket Watch 0
    Equip Lantern L

    Equip Instrument I
    Text Chat T

  • Been bothering me since the betas, 100% agree.
