Aiming like a slug

  • Hello guys,

I have made a quick test to check if this bug still on the beta and the answer is YES...
On PC, if you aim with a pistol, a telescope, canon or the sniper riffle you will have you mouse speed slow like hell...

    What's the point ?
It's a pirate game, you need to be able to shoot without a wired and bad mechanics

    Ex : PvE
Skeleton in front of you and behind you can't aim shoot the first one, turn around quickly and shoot again
You have if you want to turn around like a normal person to stop aiming and turn around !

My mouse speed in game is 1.5. I want the same sensibility when i aim with anything or at least an option to select if i want speed reduction or not.

  • @fitz0uille The simplest answer is because of crossplay. PC players have their movement slowed when zoomed to be about the same as console players. As you've probably guessed by now, it's so that the playing field is even - PC players would almost always win in a gun fight otherwise.

  • @xx-mirth-xx Do players using controllers not find it slow too? I'm sure I've seen this complaint from both sides.

  • @savage-alien It IS slow for both... but it has been done in a way that is equal to both and no easy way to 360 scope and kill.

  • @savage-alien Ah! Valid point. Yes, I think both console/controller players and PC players have had issues with how slowly scoped items move.

BUT, I think it's a much more glaring delta between scoped and none-scoped aiming for PC players. I still might wager that the sensitivity which Rare has gone with, is what they believe to be ideal for cross-play.

  • @musicmee Except that a large majority of gaming mice for PC have options to adjust sensitivity whenever we want. We already have an advantage, and an adjustment to the game's sensitivity would help ALL players especially those using controller who are stuck into one sensitivity.

  • @savage-alien Perhaps only allow Console players to adjust sensitivity :D

  • @savage-alien That you may but its less of an advantage because the scopes have already been limitedin game unlimited scope plus your sensitivity changes... that would be OVER powered. Rare have done all they can to lessen and mitigate this as much as they can... it's not foolproof but it goes some way to doing this.

  • @xx-mirth-xx has that been officially announced as the designed intent? I haven't seen or heard anything from rare saying they were deliberately nerfing one platforms peripherals to balance the game. It seems like it's just rhetoric.

  • @zalavaaris It kind of has... the team are working at a less than 5% difference in abilities and advantages between platforms... so every little detail has to be looked at and assessed via telemetry and has been over the past year.

  • @zalavaaris I don't believe Rare stated that they "nerfed" PC, but they've definitely discussed their work towards balancing PVP for cross-play, specifically to reduce the inherent PC advantages.

I'll see if I can find some quotes/videos and link in a bit!

    EDIT: here ya go!

"However, PvP between platforms, or more importantly device input, is the big focus point for us as a design team, and already we've been working closely with the game experience team to change the way the guns work to be better balanced for cross play."

    From: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-08-21-rare-confirms-sea-of-thieves-cross-platform-play-for-pc-and-xbox-one

  • @xx-mirth-xx but that could be as simple as making body shots do the same damage as headshots to lower the need for precise aiming. I've heard they are trying to balance for cross play but nothing has been stated with regards to the aim down sights sensitivity.

"We've put in a bunch of telemetry around this, and with the change to guns it's made them feel tonally so much more fitting, as previously they felt more like laser weapons than ancient plundered-and-pillaged gunpowder-driven blunderbusses."

So to me that sounds like bullet drop and wind relates bullet physics rather than making pc players hate using certain weapons due to nerfed peripherals. If they have slowed down the pc sensitivity to the insanely bad speeds they are now for the sake of balance they have made a design flaw. Change the effectiveness in a way that doesn't worsen the actual game play.

Edit: thank you for taking the time to find that article!

  • @zalavaaris True, but when they said things like "change how the guns work", it leads me to believe they are focused on the guns and not the hit boxes for a player.

  • @musicmee That's fine. I wouldn't want them to add a sensitivity slider/option, but if both controller and mouse players find it slow like you say, then it might be worth a slight adjustment or looking into. I'm sure Rare isn't locked into these sorts of things yet, they seem quite open to feedback. Balance is a tricky thing that a lot of games make changes to even after release.

I wouldn't want Rare dismissing any sensible feedback that would benefit all players.

  • @xx-mirth-xx totally true, but bullet drop and wind physics instead of the "laser gun" problem is also changing how the guns work.

  • @zalavaaris Yeah, obviously we're all speculating here and I think the best guess with what we've been given so far is that it's a balancing issue. As the common saying goes, "It's a feature, not a bug".

I'm sure it will be tweaked over time, though.

  • But Xbox have Aim assist (Not sure of that)...
And you can play with a keyboard and a mouse if you want to :)

Edit : if you use Shotgun, you don't have this "Slow mod" when aiming !

So it's clearly a design flaw currently.

I made a ticket but they all time answer the same thing :
    "Ahoy there,

Thank you for reporting this issue! Your report has been sent over to our Test team for further investigation.

Thank you for helping to steer the course of Sea of Thieves.

    Regards,
    Sea of Thieves Customer Support"

When i play a game, i want to have fun with it and with an aiming like that it's not fun at all (For me)
They have to be clear : Fix or don't fix, there is no try !

    Fix : perfect
Not fix : without me (Not a big lost guys :D )

  • @fitz0uille But you don't use a scope like a mechanic with a Shotgun. Spyglass and Scope zoom in and limit your FOV. So I don't think it is a design flaw. One recommendation was to unscope aim and scope again, but this is still a bit slow for that mechanic.

I too am on PC, but I can honestly see a HUGE advantage in playing with Mouse and Keyboard over controller because of the response. Poor Controller players would not stand a chance. I think what others have said is correct, it is built in to the game so there is not a clear advantage for PC Players.

  • I can fully stand behind that it should be a bit slower when ADS but as it is now it's really stupid. If I put my sense really high, I get higher ADS. I have to put my sense in game to 1 because it's so high initially, and when I do that, the ADS is SUPER slow. There really needs to be a better scaling of the sensitivity, or just have a separate slider with a lower maximum.

This is actually a really big issue.

  • @musicmee Also, pirates (or any folk with firearms) back then (as it is seen in the game) typically risk one shot at a time. You can't reload hundreds of clips/bullets, making it balanced and a little bit real.

Yea its an bug and i hope it will get fixed soon

  • @musicmee
PC gamers with a mouse that can have the DPI changed through software can just set up a macro so everytime they zoom in the DPI spikes to match the sensitivity when not looking down your sights. It’s going to be a bit of a pain to make the sensitivities match perfectly hit it can be done.
I heard at one point that they were going to add a slider for sensitivity when looking down your barrel. With the DPI macro in mind not having the slider only further hinders the console players since there is a work around for most PC players and nothing a console player can do with their controller.
This is coming from a PC player with a mouse that can change DPI. I don’t mind if the playing field is leveled in someway, but this is a terrible way to do it.

  • I wonder if all the people saying it's supposed to be this bad are playing on console. It feels really really bad to play guys... it's not fun to use. On top of that, it isn't serving a purpose of any kind because any of the pc gamers that they are worried about having an advantage already do. I'd bet they are all using gaming mice with "sniper" modes that make this attempt at balancing pointless. Nevermind our 144hz that give us an edge over console players anyway. Attempting to balance cross play by limiting the potential of our hardware is frankly dumb and the effort is wasted when we work around anything they can throw at us. It won't work and pc players will always have an advantage... always

Edit: I should also say that this isn't supposed to be a snarky mean comment. It's genuinely feedback from someone who cares for the game. I also want to say with the utmost respect that this game isn't exactly CS:GO. Nor is it star craft, overwatch, call of duty, or any other super competitive game where these small advantages actually matter. That is to say if this actually IS a feature and not a bug.

  • I have several friends who are quite experienced in aiming in pvp games and they tested the beta today for a short while and then stopped after being unfairly slaughtered by console/controller players who had no problems aiming with the sniper weapon. So balancing obviously isnt making it fair.

My honest opinion with the current sensitivity issue: Screw cross-plat i prefer playing only against pc players with proper sensitivity if the current situation is the alternative, because its properly bananas.
