Is it worth $60? [Edit on March 21 after 5 hours played] - Review

  • [New Post 21.03.18] Please Devs, read the suggestions :(

Simple Answer, no. I might pay $30 for it as it is right now.
I will edit this in 11 days again when our 2 week free trial expires.

    Positives of the game

    • The Water, sailing and everything that comes with it is absolutely stunning. We enjoyed a good hour just sailing around the ocean.
    • Storms are epic and actually really difficult to manage for new players.
    • The music you can play and the music in the background really adds to the atmosphere.
    • you can't help yourself but start talking like a pirate, the immersion is insane.
    • Finding treasure feels very rewarding
    • Sea battles take coordination and experience
    • The sunset with the waves crashing looks better than IRL xD

    Negative of the game

    • Gold is meaningless, therefore everything you do to get gold feels more and more meaningless over time. To put it in perspective, for beginning treasure hunts you get around 500-700 gold depending on the chest.
    • A new Bucket costs 2,750, Lantern 2725, instruments 4100, sword 10,000, rifle 13,500, Sails 70,000.
A bucket is the cheapest Item I found, meaning you need to find 4-6 treasure chests to receive your first bucket.
    • There are 4 types of styles you can choose from, Admiral, Bilge, Sea Dog, Sovereign. All 4 cost the same amount and just look different.
    • There is just not much to do besides from playing sailing simulator, admiring graphics, goofing around with friends and having a sea battle every hour or so. (I ran into 4 people in 5 hours)
    • These are the main issues, there are some other ones but not going into it because its already wordy enough as it is.

    Suggestion
    (@ Rare, please read)

    • You can buy weapons with 4 different styles, why not give all 4 different boosts.
    • Bucket example, your standard bucket holds 1 liter of water, you carry the bucket at speed "1", and it takes you 1 sec to dump the bucket.
    • The captains bucket holds 2 liters, you can carry the bucket at speed "2" and it takes you 1.5 sec to dumb the bucket.
    • A other bucket might only hold 0.5 liters but you can carry it at speed 0.5 and it takes 0.5 sec to dumb the bucket.
      Same with Sails:
    • One sail might have higher maximum speed but takes longer to speed up and move around for the wind.
    • The other sail as a lower maximum speed but speeds up a lot faster and is easier to move around for the wind.
Clothing, You can carry more but move slower etc
Weapons, You have longer range but do less damage. etc
The point is it is 100% legit to run around with your starting gear without having a disadvantage BUT as you progress yourself to pirate legend you become the type of pirate you want to be.
You want to be a bulky pirate that can carry a lot, moves slower, has short range weapons that do a lot of damage but take forever to reload? Than work yourself towards that.
You want to be a agile pirate that moves around fast but can't carry a lot and does little damage? Go for it!
You just want to be average joe and enjoy the game and buy only things that change your appearance? go for it!
Meaning you would not take the current fashion stuff out of the game.

Everyone would still play on a level playing field but there would be diversity

  • to simply answer the title.

    Yes

  • @uldra11 I would gladly pay $60 for only what was in the scale tests as I had more than enough hours of fun from only that everything coming in now just adds to the value for me

  • I think the only worry is the lack of content, but updates and dlc will add to that. Content aside I think the immersion and experiences you get in SoT is unmatched by any other game I have ever played, and well worth 60$ alone.

  • I would say this.....The game has had technical Alphas, Stress Tests, and is waiting on a Beta to be announced. Is the game worth $60?

I preordered and I am happy I did. I think it is far worth the money.

I also say screw reading people's opinions and reviews at this time. Even mine! This game has not officially been released so all the information you read is based on either very very very limited access (Stress Tests had 1 guild and not much else to it) and reported things to be in the game.

I advise watching the Inn-Side Story on Youtube. This is the Dev team clearing a large amount of things up. I advise even more playing the Beta as soon as possible. Lastly, if you can always sign up for the free trial of Game Pass when the game launches and try it for free for 14 days. Playing is always the best way to figure out if something is good.

You could always wait until full reviews are out after the launch date too.

  • @uldra11 To put it this way I have put 100 hours in to the "BETA" and still not bored.

So I would say yes it is worth it. Its important to remember this is just the beta, there is so much which has been held back. They have mentioned already that raids will be a thing, and of cause the kraken hunt. I have also seen that all DLC will be free, if true that is self makes it worth it.

I would say IMO, you really want one other friend to be playing the game with, wouldn't of spent this amount of hours playing it on my own. However with at least one friend its sooooooooooo much fun, i honestly have not played game and enjoyed it this much since the first ever time i played WOW vanilla for the first time.

  • Short answer,

    Yes,

Did I already pay the 60? Yes, i pre ordered it after i played a few hours on a scale test.

I was just pleased and so surprised when i got into the game, walked out the tavern and into the world around me.

Turned my pc graphics up to ultra, got a voyage and was off bro, out smarting other pirates on a big galleon, finding a message in a bottle on a shore that i was sailing passed.
Followed the message, it let to 6 treasure chests on an island and a skeleton captian that i killed and got to keep its glowing skull as a trophie

The immersion is unmatched by any other game for sure. We just think that we might get bored after goofing around for 30,40 hours because there is just not enough stuff to do. Most the games we play together for 100+ hours before getting bored.
Also, why can a galleon only hold 4 people? You can easily fit 9 people and have meaningful roles.

    • 1 sails/anchor /board enemy ship
    • 4 canons (full broad side) / anchor /board enemy ship /
    • 2 repair/anchor/navigation/protect boat/treasures if boarded
    • 1 captain
    • 1 crows nest.
  • Wait for the beta... I would say yes, bought this game for me and my brother. I have so many games, but this is the first after a long time, where I don't have to play with a pulse of 180.

  • I would say it is 100% worth the $60 or game or for Xbox users (game pass).
-Has a fantastic community and large population

    • Has a fast operating and professional support team
    • runs smoothly and well tested.
    • Great mechanics
    • cross platform
-Vast opportunities to expand ideas on that are constantly being updated
      -Fair combat and rewarding system
  • Too early to say really. If it's still going strong in 12 months time then it definitely would be worth it...

Hopefully it's not going to be the next No Man's Sky, although after playing the game last weekend, there's no doubt in my mind that I made the right choice pre-ordering the game.

We play on PC :D you think its worth there as well?

-Has a fantastic community and large population

The community actually seems not toxic which is great. Hope it stays that way!

    • Great mechanics

What are some mechanics that stand out to you?

    -Fair combat and rewarding system

Could you explain the reward system a bit more? What can you actually buy with all your gold that is meaningful/progresses you in the game.

  • @doctor-n****e
damn... have to get 12 months for 60$ to be worth it? Hell of a lot of c**p games out then..i woulda paid 60 for how much fun ive had in the way incomplete beta.

Thanks I will do that :) Can you get the free trial for PC or only X-Box?

  • @uldra11 Right now I have heard people cannot download the Sea Of Thieves Final Beta for either unless they have played before. However, when the announcement comes you will be able to play it on either/both PC/Xbox. You just need to download each separately from the store.

  • $60 US, absolutely. However if you're in another country you may have to think twice.

I heard someone in New Zealand say it costs him $120 NZD which is about $90 US

  • @uldra11 Because if you have more roles to do, it makes it harder and more balanced.

That's the part, that really keeps the saling fun. You always have something to do.

  • @uldra11 sagte in Is it worth $60?:

We have not played the game ourselves but watched about 5,6 hours worth of content to have a good Idea what to expect.

If you had played the game by yourself, you surely would´t have to ask what the game is worth :)

  • Thanks everyone for your responses, I still wonder. What can you actually do with all your earned gold?

  • @uldra11 you basically buy cosmetics, for your pirate and ship.

  • @uldra11 in my opinion, yes. But at the end of the day, its your money.

  • @uldra11 you basically buy cosmetics, for your pirate and ship.

Found a YouTube Video and it seems like further you progressed the more cosmetics you get meaning the more you can show off how awesome you are.

Wished for something more than cosmetics but I understand the logic behind (a gun is just a gun, your caracter is not becoming better but the player itself).
Still would be nice if you can could buy some type of upgrades with your gold :( like better sails, anchor, canons, canon balls, larger bucket, better shovel etc.

  • @uldra11 No they won't that people playing first time in maybe a year are in trouble, cause the most early gamer got those things you talking about. You need 3 things to be better in this game than other pirates: Skill, Skill and Skill :P

  • @uldra11 I would pay $60 for the scale test beta that we played. I don't know how to describe the game in any way other than: it is fun to play. Period. It has been a very long time since I played a game that was just so enjoyable to play.

That said, a BIG part of the gameplay is having fun people to hang out with while you play. So hopefully some of your friends enjoy it as much as you do, or join one of the many groups forming on the forums.

  • @uldra11 everyone critcizes based on a STRIPPED Scaletest version. i personaly played the scale tests till lvl 25 (which was the max lvl i think) and sometimes i got really hard puzzles to solve. i think once we had over 30 min to find the spot marked with a hidden x. everyone on the team started searching, because everyone belived the other people were bad, but the truth was, everyone walked past it about 10 times.

i think the game is worth 60$ if the community supports it. i fear that most people will buy this game, and stop playing after 20 hours. I think most people dont like that horizontal progression system. Because why should you buy the admirals blunderbuss, if it does not do additional dmg. People like to gank/farm new players with better weapons. but here everyone has the same possibilitys. i hope everyone starts with a pistol+sword+blunderbuss+sniper

for me the companys are more like this:

    • Gold Hoarders (puzzle solving/treasure hunt)
    • Merchant Alliance (Collecing resources and transfering them)
    • Order of Souls (PVE fight against tons of sceletons)

with order of souls i am pretty sure, because in scale test 2 there was the possibility, that you found one of their quests in a bottle. We immediately did that quest, then we found out that you cannot use them right now. when we did that quest, i thought they would respawn forever.

  • No matter how much more content is added.... at the end of the day its still going to be "sail here, sail there, Find this< people are trying to kill you." that being said I have had a lot of fun on this game with my friends. Its definitely a co-operative game you are really supposed to work together. Even with the "no content" it has been a blast and id say definitely worth it.

  • To answer your concerns about the negatives of the game:

    • "lack of content, the world seemed empty to me after awhile. No hidden story's to discover"
The beta test is not meant to be a reflection of the full game, but a very raw representation of the mechanics. There will be a lot more added plus updates when the devs feel the game needs a little kick to shake away any staleness.
    • "It feels more like a treasure Hunter game than a Pirate game. Definition of "Pirate" = a person who attacks and robs ships at sea."
That is because only one alliance is currently in the game. The merchants essentially give you a grocery list of things you need to bring them as well as animals that you need to care for during the whole voyage. For the order of souls you need to fight skeleton bosses.
    • "No NPC ships or outposts to raid"
There will be skeleton forts that anyone can enter, so you'll either have to work together with others or kill them and keep all the loot for yourself. You can also raid players at outposts or islands before they sell their treasure.
    • "No natives or colonists npc"
Not sure what you exactly mean by that but the only npcs besides enemies are the merchants at outposts. I think the devs wanted to keep NPC pirates or killable NPCs out of the game.
    • "poor boarding mechanics."
Not much that can be fixed with that besides climbing the ladder or ramming into a ship in order to jump on, there are planks which make it somewhat easier.
  • I guess it depends on the value of 60 dollars to the consumer. I don't want to be taken the wrong way here but 60 dollars isn't worth much to me so a couple hours of fun makes it worth it. I don't think SOT will offer as much value compared to other 60 dollar games but at the end of the day it's only 60 bucks so... Yea I think it's worth it

  • Scale test's and beta are two different things. Scale test is to measure the server/code capacity and how well it handles. Beta allows us to test many if not all of the features in game. I'm going to assume that you haven't been a part of the beta or at the very least seen the data mined posts or read up on what's planned as i all i see is "lack of content" and few of your suggestions fall under what is to be expected in game.

Still with the content that's coming, it's still a tad expensive. But it's cross-play,play anywhere not to mention the 14 day free trial for Xbox game pass which will include access to this game.

Nothing against blackwake as i own that game to, but it's not what SoT is trying to achieve. Blackwake is slowly under development. That said it's focus is realism and pvp.

I think this post may help you decide whether you feel the price tag or game pass is suited. http://crewofthieves.com/news-en/sea-of-thieves-february-13th-news-summary/

After that post there has been a few other things not included in that article. I for one hope SoT continues to be expanded on (which im sure it will). But just enjoy your time within the game and don't drop the Booty lad!

  • Its worth however much you are willing to pay for it.
Thats the beauty of the market.

  • OP, this one is for you!
I totally cherry-picked your concerns, but I read your entire post. I just cut things out for sake of brevity. :)

Blackwake only gameplay but very well done is navel battles. At a price point of $20 the average gamer gets 20-30 hours out of it before getting bored.

    • So this is on you, personally. There might be some people who’ve played 800 hours on the game and still going. It just depends.

SOT has ether equal or less epic combat but is criticized for lack of content and is worth triple the price?

    • The quality of sea battles in Sea of Thieves is epic to me. It's true pvp. Everyone is on equal ground (outside of sloop vs. galleon).

Generally accepted rule for all sandbox games $1 = 1 hour gameplay.

    • I have not seen the official rulebook for $-to-gameplay. I think that is a very subjective thing. Minecraft cost me ~$30 and I've put 1000's of hours into it in the past. Same with Skyrim, Fallout series, WoW, etc, etc.
I've also paid $70 for games that I spent less than 10 hours playing. I go game by game.

M&B Warband (sandbox) $15 = 200+ hours of gameplay (infinite)
Kingdome come deliverance (Story driven) $60 = 100 hours gameplay

    • I think that goes against your initial argument above. shouldn't M&B Warband=$200+ by your reasoning?
Besides, I've spent a lot of time in games that, on average, run ~40 hours to beat. Side quests, messing around, trying to break things, and hacking the game give me a lot of enjoyment and can dramatically increase my time spent on it.
So it comes down to... Do you play to beat the game or do you play to explore the game?

Its more about the journey than the destiny

    • This is very subjective. I've played games where the destiny was the goal, hell with the journey (Think WoW). In other games, the destiny wasn't important, I wanted the journey (Think GTA).

lack of content, the world seemed empty to me after a while. No hidden story's to discover.

    • I have been noticing all kinds of hidden puzzles, areas, landmarks, etc. Names written on random things intrigue me. I usually have to stop and look them up. I have a never-ending thirst for WHY things are the way they are. Since this was just the Beta, I think...I know the final game will have soooo much more.

It feels more like a treasure Hunter game than a Pirate game. Definition of "Pirate" = a person who attacks and robs ships at sea.

    • I think it depends on your mood. I LOVE the treasure hunter aspect. It really clicks with me. But, there are days I just want to rain destruction on poor ships. And I try lol. You have total control on how you play this game. Do what you want. If you want to be a pirate by attacking/robbing things at sea, do it. If not, don't. I won't judge either way.

***No NPC ships or outposts to raid"""

    • Yes, I would love to see this put into the game. There are pirate forts to raid, but currently there is little to no content there. I'm hoping for some craziness on these islands.

    No natives or colonists npc

    • Not sure this is a big thing for me. It's a pirate-like game with outposts filled with other pirates. I'm not sure I need a native or colonist. - MAYBE you could say the mermaids are natives, but that's a stretch.

    poor boarding mechanics.

    • This one confuses me. What are proper boarding mechanics? So far I can jump from my ship to theirs, climb up their ladder, walk onto their ship if we crashed into each other, or shoot myself out of a cannon onto their ship. Unless I get some X-men powers, I can't think of too many more ways to do it.... Well.... now that I think of it. I'd like to swim under their boat and bore a hole that I could crawl up through to retrieve chests :D

We play on PC :D you think its worth there as well?

    • Yes. As the game matures and modders come out with graphic packs and HUD modifications, I think it will have a Sea of Modders community who will be able to make the game look/play every more amazing. Not sure Xbox will have that luxury

What are some mechanics that stand out to you?

These are a few that I really enjoy even though some of them are not inter-actable.

    • Dropping the anchor at full speed and swinging the ship around.
    • Scavaging for supplies after a huge battle
    • Ship-map navigation w/ wind
    • STORMS!!!!
    • Calm and quiet waters as the sun goes down
    • Sea gulls and sunken ships
    • Ship of the Damned
    • Shooting myself out of a cannon
    • That feeling when you hear the "thunk" sound when you first hit a chest with your shovel.
    • Swimming through coral, fish, and seaweed.
There are so many more, but they really draw me into the game.

Could you explain the reward system a bit more? What can you actually buy with all your gold that is meaningful/progresses you in the game.

    • This game isn't like most games. It's seems to be a true sandbox with very little end-game. Not saying there isn't any since we are still in Beta, but from what I can tell, it's more about sailing, shooting, and treasure hunting. The experience is the reward for most of it. If you are determined to get the best stuff/gear and have the most of everything, you might not be as interested.
But if you are in it for the experience, you are in for a treat. I would say try coming at the game with a different mindset. If it doesn't work, no loss, but if you like it, you might start looking at other games differently as well.
  • @uldra11

Just wait a week after release and check the forums. It's not like you miss out on anything by waiting. Everyone is hyped and looking at the game with rose tinted goggles.

  • @metasploit4 Thanks for answering basically all my concerns :) From what I saw the game is definitely beautiful.
Did not even think about mods, lets hope some of the modders from the Bethesda titles is interested in this game and are willing to add a lot more stuff to it.
just two more questions. sorry :D

    • You know by chance if there will be a official mod kit?
    • can I get the 14 day free trial soon as the game releases for PC?

@Eph1zul you are absolutely right! Guess time will tell.

  • @uldra11 if not, get it for 10$ w/Xbox GamePass.

  • Yes It Is Absolutely Worth The $60 From The Skully Hoarding Fort Boss Battles To The Raids Within Them An Amazing Kraken Epic Voyages And Beautiful PVP So Much Customization ETC ETC PreOrder Now
