Idea: Cannonball chests.

  • Simple. 2 types of chests. Works like normal chests, for the most part.

    • One small chest carryable by one person. Contains 5-12 balls.

    • A bigger chest, must be 2 people to carry. Contains 15-25 balls.

    • Must be delivered to a barrel on the boat wich makes the chest dissapear and the barrel filled.

    • Can pick cannonballs from the chest to inventory.

    • Chest dissapear when empty.

    • Can work just as well with the 2 other resources. (Bananas and planks.)

This is my attempt at getting people to, somewhat keep their boat because getting resources wont be as time consuming. Since as far as i know, there is ZERO penalty for losing your ship. Alot of people, me and my friends included, just scuttled our ship when we ran out of cannonballs and had no treasure to deliver.

    It just doesnt feel right.

  • Or... carryable barrels... I'm just imagining the pure horrible exploitness of carrying a banana barrel onto a skeleton fort hord battle or strait up stealing other pirates supplies... by the barrel... on second thought... ignore this.

  • I could see purchase supply barrels from the shipright God knows she has enough supplies. But I think if we take the two ideas and smooth them together and we get a consumable barrel of supplies we can find/purchase we might have a working mechanic.

  • @kigretheviking I disagree, the fact that resources take time to collect gives them an associated value (or time-sink.) This makes reckless engagements have an associated cost and gives you reasons to scour islands for them, or floating barrels or shipwrecks.
I became used to the mechanic quickly and began to optimize my habits to increase our inventory. Personally I'm not bothered by it and think it actualy adds to the games design.
If my only goal was to sink every ship I ever see and grief 24/7 I would agree with you but then I would be wrong.

  • @senilegold

Another method of getting resources wouldnt hurt imo.
Just imagine finding a cannonball chest when you really need one? :)

  • @senilegold I see where your coming from. I usually yell out to my crew to make sure they have empty pockets before going ashore or diving. But I think I remember seeing that there would be an increase in server population and that means increased PvP time and more resources spent and the current foraging system might not be able to keep up.

  • @kigretheviking I personally prefer just picking them out of barrels, they come in abundance and you have more important things to carry in your arms like gunpowder and chests. Definitely want more chests but ones that are worth the effort of grabbing.

  • @psychohaeman Not necessarily a bigger map if 2.5x bigger (my guess,) could lead to less encounters. Plus many sailors have my mind set of i get more reliable ways to progress then hope you have chests and don't plan to attack unless you attack me or your a potential threat to my safe harbor.
But yeah having to run was actually fun, I ran out of boards once, cannons twice and those situations where I had loot and no option but to run were fun and tense.

  • What do you know, carryable supply crates are actually a thing. Prepare for banana refueling stations at skeleton fortresses :P

  • Cannonball chest with 50 slots exist. Just get a quest to deliver 50 cannonballs for the merchants and ignore the quest and keep the empty chest. Pretty useful to have one you can throw down on the deck next to your cannons.

You can take them with you to an island so you don't have to go back for 10 but 60 cannonballs if you want.

  • I would have fun with cannon ball crates, I co-sign this idea.

  • Cannonball/Bananas/Planks chests are already in the game. Just do Merchant Alliance missions or find them around as random loot.

  • @arcangelo87 @Mofl-III This post is 10 days old. We hadn't played the merchant alliance yet.

  • @lonegoatknifer, yeah, noticed that too late.
But maybe some players here (like @Lord-Sphinktus) still don't know that. Maybe OP wasn't able to play the Final Beta.

I played all the betas! :) And yes, i am aware that there is something close to what i suggested here ingame. It made me a happy man.

  • My crew and I found a cannonball chest in the Final Beta. It can hold 50 cannonballs and can be placed on the top deck. You can also get one from just getting a cannonball chest from a higher level merchants quest.

The only thing that sucks is having to press R to open the chest. Which brings up two options that need to be clicked on PC. The two options are either taking Cannonballs or storing cannonballs.

My crew found it super handy in PVP and filling up on all the islands we stopped at. Put it on the beach or a dock, and you don't have to jump on your galleon/sloop everytime to fill up the barrels.

  • Shortcuts to gaining supplies appear to run contrary to the game's design philosophy.

If you run out of cannonballs, you have to go find some cannonballs, pick them up and carry them back to the ship. If you don't have enough cannonballs for a fight, then don't fight.

There's a lot of similar threads about supply shortcuts, and whilst well intended, I believe that many of the suggestions come from players who aren't prepared to so supply runs due to being impatient, lazy or just keen to keep their ship at sea.

Personally, I'd be disappointed to find a chest full of cannonballs. However, as logistics play a big part of the game, I can see the value of a cannonball chest, but you're still going to have to manually pick up the items and transfer them to storage.

  • @thelagmage but isn't that the pirate way??? I quite like the idea of being able to steal supplies from other ships.

  • I think every possibility to have almost infinite resources should be avoided (filling your deck with banana, wood or cannonball chests).

I don't know if there's a cap on the normal storage in the game...?

  • @toonator in the final beta there was a cap of 100 pices each kind of ressources in every barrel.

  • Anyone have any idea what a fully loaded cannonball crate sells for to the merchants?
