Port camping

  • Hey so if i'm correct, a group of lets say 4 players can just camp in a port next to the chest selling guy right, and lets say for example I came back from hours of doing quests and have a lot of chests to sell and i get to the chest merchant.
Can an enemy crew just camp people in there and kill them, then steal the chests and cash it in for themselves? shouldn't there be like a safe zone if that's the case.

I'm guessing there will be those boring players just camping there to ruin people's hour long voyages and just steal their stuff in a bit of an unfair way. thank you

  • So let us give you a real honest opinion. Can it be done? Sure. Will it be done? Possibly.

However, firstly this is going to be super boring for the team on the island. You will have to find someone, wait, hope they chose your outpost over 5-6 of the other outposts, then attack you. As a captain of a ship you have the option to choose what outpost you go to. If you see a ship or a mermaid, go to a different outpost. Keep your eye on the horizon and you will be ok.

There will not be safe zones. It takes away from the dramatic urgent feeling that someone could come attack you, which is what they want!

Edit: Another thing to think about is how you are discussing Hour long voyages. Those voyages are long for you doing them, that time to sit and wait at a port... wow. No thanks for this pirate. Now if you are in the water sailing back I may get the urge to come see if you have anything and attack, but you also have the option of dropping off treasure here and there.

Good luck figuring out your adventure path!

  • If someone sits for hours doing nothing at all in hopes someone is dumb enough to sail into a busy port then i guess they can do what they want.
Me personally i will just sail past and make them wait longer.

  • If I see people on the outpost they are usually greeted by a volley of cannon fire

  • @nightmare247365 This took less than 4 mins after seeing a ship approach on my way to outpost.

I wouldn't spend too much time on it. This poor guy was just a victim of circumstance. Nyuck,Nyuck, Nyuck!

  • @salazar-armando You gotta be smart about it, look around the island for a ship, or mermaid. Because of this, we always send just one person with our cheapest chest to sell the first one, by himself to scout it out.

I don't think during the main game many crews will do this, there will be quite a lot stuff to do, and any crew risks sitting at an outpost for hours with nothing to do if they do this tactic. Especially if people turn in only 2 chests, it really wouldn't be worth it for crews to camp out for hours with very little reward.

You'll see it sometimes, I doubt itll be very often.

  • @nightmare247365 before you step on land make sure you don't see any mermaids thats a sign of an player.

  • @cebelicus But you also said "4 minutes" and "on your way" that means you were out on a voyage not just sitting there waiting for the poor guy! Also that Mermaid smoke cloud should have been a dead giveaway. Poor poor individual did not know what hit him.

  • @de4th-fire I did mention that in my previous posting.

  • Not sure if this is supposed to be a passive aggressive sideways post about safe zones or not.

If so, go find a different game. This is not going to have safe outposts.

If not, then I will share my experience from the last beta with you.

I tried this technique twice last beta. Once by myself, and I tried it once with a crewmate. Both times total around 4.5 hours camping two different outposts.

First time I had two ships come into port with chests during a 2.5 hour camp. Second time I had zero during the 2 hours there.

I’ll just let that info marinade with ya, and expect you’ll draw the same conclusion I did to your question.

  • @nightmare247365 Only your crew can see the siren/mermaid smoke plume. You have to keep a close eye in the water to see an enemy one on the way into an outpost. Near impossible at night.

  • While this was a more likely occurrence in the Alpha, Beta and stress tests, I think it will be less likely to happen when the full release happens. From what I gather, these early access sessions only allowed us to play on a portion of what is supposed to be a larger map. I'm thinking with the full sandbox in play, it will be less lucrative to just wait it out and hope a crew stops by your port to cash in their goods. You're likely to make more coin if you just go out to quest, or loot/plunder other crews on the high seas.

  • @nightmare247365 yeah you have a very good point. But it would suck it it happened though, maybe they could like figure it out like this:

if the crew with the chest enters the port and they are like close to the chest seller, (just have like a collision box there or something) and then if someone kills em very close to it and cashes in the chest that him/his crew didn't get maybe they could make it so he gets less gold from it or something? idk just throwing ideas, but yeah it probably wont happen very much. thx for the quick reply!

i did it once while semi afk

the only difference, was that i was on a solo sloop and i opted to scuttle, removing my ship from the island i was on

i didnt think anyone would actually turn in and i honestly wouldnt do this as my main way of pirating, it wasnt even as fun as when you pvp on the water

  • Try circling the outpost to look for ships or mermaids if you see either there is a crew ashore. So send scouts to check. If there are campers then leave and go to a new outpost. There’s always a way out man and always a way to come out on top.

  • @salazar-armando I would not say that it would not happen. I will say that in all the alpha/stress/closed beta tests that I have played in, I have yet to have someone camp me while turning in chests. Others like the poor guy in the video may have had someone do that, but I think it is far less likely that you think.

It does not mean that Rare may not change it in the future. Game plans are not to change it, but if the player base becomes increasingly campy then I could see them putting something into place. Until then, I would be very very surprised if it happens very often.

  • @nightmare247365 or maybe they should give your crew a bit of reputation for digging the chest out, and then the other half of the reputation it gives you it when you cash it in. so if they steal it, they wont get full reputation or something... Idk I'm not the best idea machine but i guess it wont usually happen.

it will make funny content for youtubers though so not too bad

  • @salazar-armando
Yep it's a solid valid and well planned tactic..
As well for the forts, developers already said it's a valid option for a crew to just wait for others to clear it and then attack the players after the clear fort notification.. that's the reason it exists.

They want us to be able to frame others. And this makes you be more aware and careful doing things..

  • @salazar-armando We camped the Gold Hoarder and its fair play really, it can be spotted a mile away too, you will see their ship or if they are right next to the gold hoarder, they can get in 1 treasure normally.

  • The counter to this is very simple.... sail near an outpost and look in the water. If you see a mermaid waving back, there's someone without a ship on the island. Then either assault the lubbers, or just sail on to the next outpost.

Ambushes really only catch the unwary.

  • I think the camping would be annoying but there are multiple outposts so that shouldn't be an issue. also having a safe zone would be nice but it would ruin the game. imagine someone stealing your chest and then go into the safe zone and watch you cry about it? you gotta think that everything can and will be abused. this is why allowing certain things in all video games becomes pretty challenging cause there is always someone to exploit it.

  • @salazar-armando

It’s rare to have this happen. It won’t happen much. It’s not a problem mate!

  • I think its best to start your runs with the seafarer chest or the one with the lowest reward.

I was doing the calculations. The rate of return is not profitable. I also calculated 4 man crew camping 1 person at 4 most popular outposts for better results. With an average of 10-15 crews per server. I figure 1 crew will return to port every 1 hour. Also hoping they are on a specific journey returning loot to only 1 place.

I am confident my skills at FPS and attacking are slightly higher than most players so I can take out 2-3 pirates before they get the drop on me. Its best to put the barrel near the dock where most pirates sail too. Better reward.

The odds are even more slim when the game comes out. Its best to just be a pirate at sea and chase them to port.
