Upgraded Weapons?
I'm all for minor improvements, like clearer/farther spyglass, tighter blunderbuss pattern, farther range on pistols, less digs for shovels, louder/farther music effect for instruments, compass that spins less in storms. simple non breaking improvements. But not better damage. I would like cosmetic cannon colors or flame effects for cannons possibly colored flame to make your ship stand out. I'm in favor of piece of gear that keeps the combat on par, but make gear effects better where applicable in a common sense way

Do you guys think there will be upgraded weapons/cannons?
No
I feel like the game needs something to work for and spend coins on that will give you some sort of advantage besides just cosmetic items.
Your experiences and skill are your only advantage. There is no intention to have any vertical progression to mechanically give one player an advantage over any other player. This notion is largely derived from many years of nearly every game conditioning players to feel this need. Look back at games like Super Mario Bros; did Mario level up his jump to jump higher? Did he level up and become faster? It has been a very long time in the gaming industry where a game truly made the "reward" for doing things simply the experience of doing them (e.g. the gameplay).
The premise of Sea of Thieves is for the game systems to create opportunities for emergent gameplay. In other words to provide players a shared world with some things to do and then introduce stimuli into it and allow the players decisions and actions dictate the gameplay (e.g. the gameplay emerges from players responses to the world). The cosmetic horizontal progression is meant to help give you that sense of reward and accomplishment, however, if that is the only thing you are putting value on you will likely be disappointed with Sea of Thieves. A large part of the focus on the emergent gameplay is to make those experiences the reward.
Those stories of how you were on some voyage, anchored on the southern beach head of Cannon Cove and exploring the island looking for a painted kraken. When out of nowhere a shot rings out and as you turn you see where it came from you see another crew charging toward you. Narrowly escaping back to your ship while franticly yelling to your crew to hoist anchor and make ready the sails! The 45 minute battle at sea while you and your crewmates scramble about the ship making repairs, bailing water, angling the sails, and strategizing how to out maneuver and out think the scurvy dogs that are after your booty. If those shared adventures hold no value for you; I feel you are missing out on a very large part of the game.
