Is this game worth buying an Xbox for?

  • @digitalvertigo Hi there, i can answer you with my personal experience. I have a high gaming pc. I'm following SoT since E3 2016. I preordered the game before the first Close Beta. I played that and the two scale test and always had a lot of fun. Anyway after the close beta i started to read here on the forum about people playing with wife/kids and i started to think about buying an Xbox One S to play with my son, also because with the gameshare you need just one copy of the game to play on two devices. I found on an Italian store the Xbox One S 1TB with Forza Horizon 3 at 200€. I could not resist so i bought it. So i played the last scale test with my son. Now to your questions:

-You will be fine with a controller especially if you are use to it. The developers saw that pc player are just 4% more accurate and the game is made to be mutch balanced as possible

-The Xbox One S can run the game decently, compare to my pc anyway i'm sorry to say that is.... How to say.... Well, different. Frame rate (30fps) colors and details are worse of course (i play at Mythical at 60fps on 3 monitors on the pc)

-You should answer this question. If you like to play a game TO HAVE FUN, you will love it, if you NEED a goal, something to grind on, you will have fun for a while, and meaby get bored after a month or so. Keep in mind that this game shine if you play with other people and if you interact with other players. I also played UO and the feeling of costant danger is the same. If you where fine there you will be here.

So at the and i will suggest, get the game, is play anywhere and you can also use the game share feature. Then if you can play on pc of course will be better, otherwise a 200€ Xbox One S is worth buying for SoT and some other games, that's just my personal opinion of course 😀

  • what about if you got the xbox game pass will everyone get the game free? I dont know if it works like netflix where you only need 1 account and 4 people signed upto it. that could be worth looking into as SOT is free on xbox pass and on launch day. I dont have xbox pass so I dont know how it works exactly but just an idea to save you buying several copies of the game.

  • @digitalvertigo yes I preordered on xb1. Am thrilled!

  • @digitalvertigo

    1. I've played with Xbox players and even players who plug their Xbox controller into the PC. It really depends what you are used to so I wouldn't call either a better advantage than the other.

    2. I'm not aware, but I assume consoles these days stick to a certain frame rate like... 60 FPS or less? Still, I've heard no complaints about Xbox.

    3. One wise player once said, the game is more about the journey than the end. It's mainly a sandbox game to relax and enjoy but with the obvious grind. The end-game is also a worthy grind for more (cooler) cosmetics but on your way to becoming a Pirate Legend, I believe they have a schedule for which trader faction becomes available. I am not entirely sure.

On the other hand, the beta has only given us one trader faction and yet I have put so many hours into the game. So imagine if all three are available?

  • Yes totally worth it!

  • I play on xbox, pretty good, but my shipmate has the XBOX1x and plays it on a very recent, truly enormous screen in 4k ,uhd and all that jazz,, it is totally magnificent on his set up..

Gameshare work just with 2 accounts (the one that bought the game plus one family member)

But i don't know if you can share the game pass. You can share the live gold. Try to Google for the game pass.

  • @digitalvertigo u are lucky ur child are ild enought playing with u as a father i an dreaming about the day my son will be old enough to play this game with me he love water and boat so much he was watching me playing this weekend and was so happy is only 2 year old but imo thos game is one of a kind !

  • A quick note on the Gameshare comments - you should be able to get around the 2 person limit by using Family Sharing instead of Gameshare, which probably fits better in this case.

With the Microsoft Family settings, you can link a number of accounts into a family - this can be a mix of parents and children who can then all share games and apps across a number of devices (5 devices) - this way you only need to purchase the game once, and they should then all be able to use it.

You also get a bunch of other useful controls around purchasing, screen time and content controls (i.e. setting appropriate age limits on accounts, blocking user generated content and "over" sharing).

This also works for sharing the XBox Gold Account you'll need for multiplayer access on XBox, and also covers my EA Access subscription, so I assume it would work for the Game Pass games as well.

  • @zhaph That's awesome info! So if I did happen to buy 3 Xboxes I'd only need one copy of the game with family share?

    Avast maties,

After watching a lot of videos on this game I'm reminded a lot of my favorite game of all time, Ultima Online. I like the idea of an open PvP world where anything goes. The only problem for me is it's an Xbox/PC exclusive, I can obviously get around this by just buying an Xbox. Before I make that decision though, I had some questions about the game that I wanted to see if some Xbox beta players could answer.

    1. Am I going to be at a huge competitive disadvantage by using a controller? This is the one thing that could dissuade me from purchasing. I used to PC game exclusively, but being a software developer who's on a computer all day I've switched to consoles and love that experience far better at this point. I'm decent with a controller in FPS type games so I'm not new to them and am not opposed to getting a pro controller with paddles for an extra edge. I just wondered if the aim and turn mechanics will put me at a really big disadvantage.

    2. Will the game run fine on an Xbox 1 S? I don't want to buy a pro, mainly because I have two kids who game with me and I could almost buy 2 Xbox 1 S's for a single X. If the game is fun I'd obviously want them to play with me so I might end up buying 3 consoles. Since the One S is fairly affordable it is the preferred route. I don't really see much difference in graphics from the videos I've seen, so it's really down to performance.

    3. Is horizontal progression enough to keep me hooked? Do you guys find yourselves wanting to grind out quests to get cooler looking gear?

    Thanks guys!

Its not worth cause its only just 4 fun game

  • @digitalvertigo I believe that's the case yes.

  • @digitalvertigo IMO it's worth buying a computer for.

  • I had no problems playing beta/stress test on the Xbox 1, anything better would probably just be icing on the cake =) It's native 4K so if you wanna delve into your pocket books it would be quite the experience I'd imagine.

  • @rildan I just built a PC for SoT back in November while you could still get Win10 for free. Heard you still can somehow, not sure though. Now it's definitely not the best time to build as the cryptocurrency hoopla is holding things hostage, but buying pre-built gaming PCs doesn't seem to be affected by this. The companies that pre-build have contracts that keep the GPU prices down here on earth. That might not last for long.

To the OP, the FPS and swordplay are kinda clunky as far as PC standards go and I think that is intentional, as it probably helps bridge the gap between m/kb and controller. There absolutely is some disadvantage and there is no way to fix that. We all hope the disadvantage is as slight as can be and I personally have faith that Rare will continue to strive in that direction; they really want to make the cross-play pro.

If you have young children...but another PC. Children need PC skills almost as much as food and water. Nobody needs Xbox skills...

    I agree 100%

  • @digitalvertigo

Not sure if anyone else has given you this suggestion but, if you wanted to use your PC and a controller feels better to your hands lately you could use either a wired or Bluetooth XB1 controller.

That's what I've been using and it works rather well.

(edited) after reading through the other replies, it seems I wasn't quick enough to give an original solution which is fine. I'm always glad to see the community being helpful and giving solid solutions.

  • Here's a quick update: ordered an Xbox One S yesterday, it'll be here tomorrow. Thanks for all the help guys!

  • @bartimaeu NO MOUSE :( so keyboard is useless @DigitalVertigo us xbox players are at a disadvantage I dont care who you are I can tell if your playing on pc or xbox the minute we get into combat .. that being said with skill you can still outfight a pc player it's just tougher .. this is my opinion

  • @digitalvertigo correct also only one gold account I bought a second xbox for the wife just for this game

  • @digitalvertigo But did you order the sea of thieves bundle ?

  • @p0pc0rnh3mer01d I ordered one yesterday... thinking I might need another one for the kids. My wife opted for a new washing machine yesterday instead, LOL

  • @p0pc0rnh3mer01d Nope, I didn't get the Sea of Thieves bundle. I got the One S off monoprice for $199, so it plus the game are still cheaper than the $300 bundle.

  • @digitalvertigo very nice ,,, I am sad they made just the SOT bundle as an S+game+stock controller they should have made a special system skin and had an xbox one x bundle with the controller and hard drive all included for like 1k .

  • @digitalvertigo thats a good deal i just paid 359 for a S then they announced the SOt bundle 3 days later FeelsBadMan

  • @p0pc0rnh3mer01d Exactly, I didn't see the point in paying more money for it. You'd think a bundle would at least be cheaper or have a special look to the system. As far as I can tell I'm getting the same thing buying them separately but paying $40 less.

  • @digitalvertigo Youve probably already made your decision by now but I used KB and mouse mostly onthe betas but tried a pad for half an hour or so as well to see what it was like.

I found with the highest sensitivity on the pad, you couldnt spin round quick enough, it was quite painfully slow actually IMO. But to do small movements, like aiming, it was way too fast, the rates all felt wrong

I used to play the old CODs and the battlefields games on console on more or less the highest sensitivity for years, but for an FPS, movement in SOT did not fell natural to me on the pad at all.

I know some people are happy with low sensitivity but just giving my opinion on it

  • @digitalvertigo God no. This game isn't even remotely worth buying 1 xbox let alone 3. and seriously, I would argue that letting your kids play this is just plain bad parenting. I mean, have you listened to some of the psychopaths just on this forum? This is a game for really bad people who are planning on doing and saying horrible things to people because they get off on hurting others. You can't expose your kids to that.

    answers:
1- Yes. Buy a nice VGA instead a Xbox. I have the Xbox controller and I play the game with the mouse and keyboard. Did I played with the controller? Yes and I would recommend you to not play with the controller even in the PC.
2- probably will but a nice VGA would be better.
3- I would say that: yes. I do that

  • That's a flat negative. If you already have a decent PC, I would just stick with that, since the game's cross-platform.

Otherwise, PCs (especially desktops) are easier to upgrade via software updates and/or replacing parts, plus offer a much broader range of functionality, albeit at a steeper initial investment. However, as a desktop owner I can safely guarantee that the investment is well worth it.

Though, I would avoid AMD graphics cards, because their drivers are buggy with high refresh-rates and their cards don't have native DVI ports.

  • I play on PC and I have used controller in old betas and mouse in this last weekend beta. The difference is almost nelligible, mouse can turn around faster but aiming with controller is easy, this is not the classic high skill FPS with flick shots, where the advantage of mouse is massive. Controller gives an easy handling of the keys and with keyboard it's more easy to press the wrong key by mistake.

I think the mouse gives a slight advantage but nothing specially dramatic. Of course people with better sailing and strategic skills will win, against mouse or controller.

  • @digitalvertigo dont bother with the one x, its not really needed. If anything stick to the one s. Xbox is great and all, but dont expect big exclusives besides sea of thieves. Maybe cuphead and some Forza games, but thats it really.
3 Consoles sounds really fun btw, if you have it spare sounds good :D
