Can lightning actually strike your boat or crew?

  • So I was in the 3rd deck of our galleon over the weekend and a buddy said us into a high seas thunderstorm.
    A
I know you have to bale water from time to time from the rain seeping down into the holds. (Nice touch btw)

So the out of nowhere there was a crack of thunder and 3-4 holes just appeared and we filled up with water and almost went under.

    Anyone else experience this?

I managed to get a recording of what appeared to be lightning striking land by us.

  • @rylo-k3n Hey there i got struck by lightning wile I was at the helm and it pushed me away from the wheel.

  • I got struck while inside the tavern, trying to wait out the storm.

  • Amazing!

  • @rylo-k3n Ive been thrown overboard due to it! Bloomin storms have always got it in for me.

Whoever said lightning doesnt strike the same place twice hasn't sailed with me xD

  • I got a video of it if you want to see https://youtu.be/VLk8hhPl6uY Scared the c**p outta me! strike hits me at about 1:50

  • If you hit those big waves head on you will damage the front of the ship and need repairs. Learned that lesson the hard way haha

  • @rylo-k3n yes, it is attracted to your ship and you yourself, trust me, i was in a storm and got struck by lightning twice T.T

  • I sail into storms a lot, just cause I like how intense and fun it is to just try and navigate them. You can and certainly do get struck by lightning, player AND ship. It blows holes in the ship like a cannonball would.

I feel like your player getting struck should be addressed though. It only does a TINY sliver of damage to you. Which makes no sense what so ever lol. You should take significant damage from getting struck, or at least be paralyzed and unable to move or access the ships various controls. Also, the frequency of your player being struck is a little bit much. At least it is if your like me and you spend quite a bit of time in the storms.

And yeah, what @DrBullhammer said.... NEVER go into a storm with gunpowder barrels on your ship, it's an absolute death sentence!! It's like the storm gods at Rare KNOW you have those things on board, and the lightning supernaturally targets them lol

  • Oh yeah .. vaporized one of my crew

  • @rylo-k3n believe me yes he can happen last night almost did a hearth attack lol got surprise ^^

  • When I sail into a storm, I'll just climb up into the crow's nest and start shouting at the sky like Lt. Dan...............Then I'd probably get hit by lightning, fly off the ship, and try not to get eaten by sharks as the sloop just sails away XD

  • @drbullhammer not normally but if your in the middle of a big storm taking those waves head on you can bet it damages your ship.

  • Aye, be taking those shiny red gift barrels (powder kegs) out of the crows nest if you be heading into a storm, nearly shot our mate who be standing on five kegs to the stars when the lightning hit the mast...

  • @drbullhammer every time i went into a storm the odd hole or 2 would appear and there was not any lightning hitting me directly. not sure what exactly causes it, but random holes do happen.

  • @rylo-k3n i got hit with lightning while lugging an explosive barrel to the ship you can guess how that turned out, i think my poor limbs are all over that island now lol

  • @jarofpeachz thats due to the hard hitting waves :)

  • I've been struck once, but my ships have been struck dozens of times.

  • I've been struck by lightning multiple times, blasted out of the crows nest once, and into the waves, knocked off the wheel more than once... Nearly directly hit at least a half-dozen times causing damage, yep, I'm lucky!!!

  • @apocacide I agree, storms have caused holes, on a galleon we got struck, and I sent a crewmate below decks, and found no hole. Later we heard water on board, and found the lowest level almost drowned... Before I sent him below decks, we heard multiple breaks elapse, and then the water seepage sound had me send my crewmate down to confirm our fears.

  • @apocacide once, I was below decks in a storm, and watched holes open directly in front of me. I can't confirm lightning as the cause, but definitely saw the holes form...

  • Yes, it cans strike people and ships

  • Lightning can hit players and ships. If it hits the ship it will cause a hole. If it hits a player it can kill you. If it doesn't kill you it has quite a powerful knock back that may push you off your ship. It can also push you off of any interaction you're doing. So if you're steering at the wheel, you'l get knocked off, which in a storm is very dangerous.

As of the people saying they've gotten random holes in a storm before or long after lightning struck, storms at one time did cause damage over time to your ship. thus just being in a storm, lightning or not, caused holes to appear in your hull.

I feel as though they've scaled this down a lot but it does still happen from what I can tell.

As for rain if people are curious, it will not sink your boat. It will only fill so much and then stop. It's meant more like a head start for water that comes in from hull breaches.

  • @rylo-k3n yes

  • I’m actually so frightened when I’m in a thunderstorm 😂

  • I have lost many ships to the lightning, Whether it be from sinking my ship while I'm spawning into the game or grabbing supplies/equipment on an outpost or from it throwing me overboard and my ship leaving me behind while slowly sinking...

  • No joke.... I had a gunpowder barrel on my boat. Lightning struck the boat and the barrel exploded and my boat sunk.

  • @KnifeLife
Hahahaha! Yes! I've definitely been hit more than once in a row. I remember one time, when the storms were first implemented. I was adjusting sails, boom, got hit, went below decks to get a banana, boom, hit through the deck. Instadeath. I was just like... what? And started laughing.

I also know @lizalaroo is a known lightning rod, there's a whole topic about it !

I think moments like that, the random damage of lightning, are what make SoT a lot of fun I wish there were more things like it.

  • @rylo-k3n

I sat on a mountain watching a thunderstorm. I got struck by lightning for about 20% health. I could see it striking the land and sea around me.

  • @erinom3 Whats that Metallica album xD "Ride the Lightning" pretty much sums it up!

  • Been knocked off the Wheel (and ship) by lightning MANY times!

Even did the skeleton dance to one as it vaporized me!

Came back from the Ferry, got on wheel, got hit again!

    I love the storms!!! :)

  • @RYLO-K3N
Mate, take it from me and as others have said. YES. I got one short and shocking [pun intended ;) ] story. My mates and I were over yonder in the North East. Marauder's Arch was where we found ourselves looking for the booty of some pirate by the title of Vile Vic I believe. A storm caught up with us and we decided to wait it out because we had just evaded the storm earlier. So you have 2 mates making sure the ship stays afloat and myself and another buddy looting the island. As we finish digging up the booty we realize the storm is right above us. He heads back with the chest in hand and I stay put to loot for some cannonballs. We were short on them because we had sunk two galleons in a 3 free for all battle way earlier. Not to mention we ran into one of them again and gave them another dousing of hot powder. Before I finish up this tangent, our journey had taken us from the Shores of plenty to the Ancient Isles and finally to the Wilds. Half a days worth of adventure. Back to the present, having filled up on resources I head back and I get chased by lighting. If I didn't have a peg leg or a pirate's hook by now, I would definitely need to add one because lighting hit me 3 times and around me for an extra 4 times. Maybe it was the fact that Marauder's Arch was tall or that I had the admiral's hook on and the metal hook attracted the lighting. But I swear that storm wanted me dead. I booked it back to the ship and the 2nd lighting to strike me caught me midair. My buddy got a good view of that one and had a laugh while he chugged down a mug of beer. As a final note for this shocking experience lighting struck around our ship and our mast once or twice more before it ended. Would I sail to the Wilds again? Yes. Would I tackle a storm again? Yes. Would I treasure hunt with a storm on my a*s? Not with my new pirate, but the one from the betas definitely would. He's retired and I hope to have a better adventure come the launch.

  • @stonedscallywag LOL! He's just gone.

  • @andrew175151 I KNOW.

I wish I had the voice chat recorded. All the sudden he was like uh w*f happened

  • Yeah ofc it can rare should be a achievement really
