Ph.D Level Studies Of This Game

  • I know a Ph.D. psychologist at a Big 10 University who's field of study is group dynamics; you know, how groups of people interact, communicate, make decisions, tackle challenges, the works.

What we are engaging in is a unique community effort built around a video game where people meet online through the game to recreate, solve problems, and have fun.

It's something group psychologists are curious about.

  • Absolutely great to hear! This is a small step for Rare, but a large leap at least for the gaming industry and customer satisfaction, perhaps humanity as well in the long run.

All you need to know about "humanity" you learn by sailing the good sloop SS Shoot First, Ask Questions Later in this game. (That's my rig.)

  • @drayman86 Is this research?

Hey I'm not telling you how to run with your crew, but when we act like every ship is hostile we are never caught with our pants down. We tried to play nice once and their galleon opened fire on us. We executed their crew member on our sloop instantly and sunk em. Never again

Well, I might as well try that then. Gotta purloin it from ya first and see how it moves. ;)

No, this is not research. It's a video game. :)

Psychologists that study group dynamics are fascinated by this type of game that brings people together to form groups that tackle challenges, meet goals, make decisions, you name it.

Just checking. I was curious because it sounded like a research project (the title says it is a study) which the APA and FDA requires IRB oversight and approval first before recruitment and consent of human participants. I’ve had to do it myself a number of times for my own research. Observing in a public setting does not require it, but interacting in any way (like in a gaming group) for research usually does. Thanks for clarifying.

I would be interested in your group.

Yeah well it's a pirates game, I'm not playing it to trade bananas with other ships in the middle of the sea. Though I do think it would be nice to have some sort of in game forum (taberns) on Outposts. With silly games to play with other players, competitions, etc. That would be fun.

  • @drayman86 this isnt SoT but the experts were really interested in the effects of this accidental virtual pandemic and how people reacted to it.

  • @teamhilgo not all of us are in it fer strictly violence we sometimes seek to meet new possible crew mates and allies

  • @jarofpeachz Thanks for sharing that one! Very cool though I’m sure it must have been frustrating to experience and even worse to be one of the team trying to squash it.

  • @ghostpaw mmorpg turned to Ebola simulator in a matter of moments! :P

Oh no? How about joining forces to defeat that Skellie Fort and collect tons of loot?

    Captain of Sea

  • You just KNOW that Rare has behavioral psychologists on staff, or at a minimum retains some on a contract basis.

Science, baby....science. It's what makes this stuff fun all the way around, from hardware to software to human interactions.

  • @jarofpeachz this is pretty amazing.

Probably, but after that I'm sure someone will try to keep it all (what would you except from a pirate?) and kill us all.
