single player campaign.

    no, i'm not here asking if there is one, I know it's a multiplayer game. however I was thinking to myself earlier and I think it would be cool if they added a SP story to the game down the road.

    this wouldn't be co-op, or have multiplayer elements to it (i'm looking at you Titanfall "campaign") but just a really well done, scripted, story heavy campaign to go through. they could even expand on it over time and it would be a great way to introduce new things to the game in a lore friendly way.

    what do y'all think.

  • @cwarrick66 same thing as with pve or safezones.
    It will never happen. I think they will add more stories, and maybe even quests from npc's. maybe you even get some rare cosmetics out of a long (2h+) quest, like a hat of an old sailor, or a mug of the barmaid.

    stories and campaign yes, singleplayer no (unless you call sailing with a sloop solo singleplayer)

    I'm not a game designer, so it's hard to say, but I'm thinking more of something short and sweet, like how Call of Duty campaigns are sort of short, 5-6 hour story romps that are mostly on rails. In other words, we all play this great story where WE are the “hero”, “focus”, whatever...and the world’s NPCs act like only I did some great thing when the truth is everyone else did the same thing too.

    We play it, call it a day, then move onto the more sandbox like elements of a game.

    I guess for me it’s all about creating our own stories rather then a story Rare wrote for us. I don’t share the campaign story of Destiny with others. (When I played) I shared the stories about stuff that happened with my friends together of me solo between the “story” parts.

    That’s the point of SoT: all of us having an amazing world and making our own stories. Not playing someone else’s great story.

    That’s my take.

    none of which would be taken away, and frankly if there was a campaign, it would be best to not be played as our custom pirates, but as an actual named character.

    these are just thoughts though.

  • Rare has just proven themselves to be great story crafters (in the past) and it would be cool to see them do that with this world. but that's just one guys opinion!

  • maybe the lore that's in the game already will be much more rich than I'm expecting. I'm not usually a fan of the "lore codex" mechanic in games. I don't much care for trying to piece together backstory elements from endless scrolls/tablets/painting/collectibles etc.
    I do think what they're planning to do with the dynamic NPC dialogue is a step in the right direction, for sure.

  • I personally hate stories in games. I feel like someone is just holding my hand telling me exactly what to do and what a brave brave boy i am for doing it and i deserve a cookie.
    This probably will be something younger gamers eat up though so im most likely in the minority.

  • @misterdoomed I understand what you mean. What I prefer about online games is that players form stories together just from gameplay experiences. A game like Sea of Thieves thrives on all the different experiences players can have, and they can differ greatly from one another.

  • i'm going to be really honest here, I love this game but the "make your own story" thing is just marketing flair. we're not really making our own stories, we're making our own events, but nothing is persistent. nobody is going to recognize your sails on the horizon, fear our name, or run from our ships because we're the "blackbeard" of the seas. it all sounds very enticing and cool on paper but it's not going to play out like that in the full game, no matter how hard you try.

    I think a story mode would be out of place in a sandbox adventure game. that's my 2 cents

    agreed, i mean don't get me wrong the game as it is (or will be in a few weeks) is fantastic, but this idea of making a name for yourself and being feared on the seas is very ambitious and the gameplay doesn't actually support it at all.

  • I really hope they have something like this in the near future. Give us some characters with backstorys. We know of the pirate lord and captain flameheart but we need so much more

  • I would love this! maybe it could be implemented into the actual game(so you get attacked be pirates) I would love the lore and if they kept the create your own story theme trough out the campaign!

  • @cwarrick66 Campain great idea, But needs that co-op optoin. And have 2 different campain modes one for sloop one for galleon. But this might not work since there is going to be alot more ships. Not sure i campaign is going to ever be added simple fact i dont think thats where there going for this game but atleast some storys and such like skyrim when you grab an quest in the open world.

  • I think they have loads of potential here. Imagine a series where each story you get to play as another Pirate that explains how they eventually became a gold loving skelly! Would give so much depth, and if they did it right you would actually feel bad killing the Skellys and take their skulls.

  • no drastic changes in my opinion, but i'd really like to see more story elements in the faction quests. maybe a few cut scenes, but mainly more variation to the npc's and areas traversed.

    At the moment it's the last thing on my mind but we all know that games don't last forever and eventually the Sea of Thieves servers will be shut down. Hopefully that is years and years down the road, but when it happens, I want something that I can play locally to reminisce about all of the hours I have played this game (and still have yet to play). Maybe even have some private servers/LAN parties so we can still play with other people when that sad day comes.

    lol I posted that when I thought we'd be able to customize our ship... like actual definition of Customization. but we ended up getting purple and yellow unicorns instead oh well that's life some times.
