Asynchronous Leaderboards

  • Hello!

If I were a betting man I would wager that the devs have already thought of this, and I've included a list of threads on similar topics below - but! I had this idea rolling around in my head last night with visual concepts, and wanted to get it out in conceptual form so it exists somewhere. I'm not suggesting these ideas make it in for launch, but I would love to see something like this down the road (and a big shout out to other people who already support leaderboards!).

    The Inn: a Community Center

Right now the Inn only really acts as a spawn point when first loading into the game. I would love to see the Inn become a place where players can check in on the status of other players across the game. They would do this in the form of an Asynchronous Gameplay Leaderboard.

asynchronous gameplay: a phrase for describing various forms of online games that connect players but don't require simultaneous play.

Why asynchronous in Sea of Thieves? Because right now although you are able to play with other pirates and sail the high seas in an "always multiplayer experience", it would be nice if there was an aspect of the game that connected all players (in-game) even if they are not playing together.

    Most Notorious Crews

This is a way of acknowledging the accomplishments of Crews of pirates. This encourages players to group up and form Crews together, and hopefully generate an ecosystem that supports "Guilds" where players continue to play with the same people and develop friendships. It matters not the size of your crew (from 1 - 4) if you make it to the top you are shown.

    Most Notorious Crews

    In the above example:
Most Loot Claimed = Most chests handed into the Gold Hoarders
Most Skulls Returned = Most skulls handed into the Order of Souls
Most Supplies Delivered = Most Supply Missions completed for The Merchant Alliance

    Most Notorious Pirates

This would work much in the same way as the crews work, except it acknowledges the accomplishments of individual pirates. I'm guessing Rare is keeping a lot of analytics and data on what we do as pirates, so there are lots of opportunities for great "top score" ideas.

    Most Notorious Pirates

    In the above example:
    Most Dangerous = Most Kills
Most Well Traveled = Most distance traveled by boat and foot
Most Busy = Most quests completed
Most Tasty = Most deaths by shark attack
Most Likely a Ghost = Most time spent on the Ferry of the Damned

I would imagine that these Leaderboards would reset either weekly or monthly giving new players a chance for every new cycle. Other than the notoriety of being on the board (and bragging rights) these Leaderboard spots could reward titles for players for the duration of the next Leaderboard Cycle. So if you were 'Most Well Traveled' at the end of the Leaderboard Cycle, for the duration of the next cycle you can equip the title of "Navigator" - only you get this title and it goes away once the next Cycle has ended (and given to a new pirate). In regards to Crew Leaderboards, everyone on the crew would gain a title.

It is my hope that eventually the Inn can become a more social hub where pirates can check in on the happenings across the game and get updates on what events have taken place recently.

Further additions that could be located in the same spot as the Leaderboard could be notifications of current events ("Skeletons have been seen sailing across the seas!") or promotions ("Hats are all the rage! %50 off all hat purchases for today only!"). It would give incentive for people to log in on the regular outside of wanting to enjoy this wonderful game.

    Thanks for reading! :)

    EDIT
Found this gem over on @SeaOfThievesHQ on Twitter! Looks like some of these features will definitely be implemented in the Tavern of Legends - I hope we see similar features in the Inns for regular players!

  • @BodhiSlam LOVING IT ME HEARTY!
Pardon the enthusiasm but I have merely one question:
Would ye be able to customize such leader boards for a different kinda tavern. Let's say a legendary one, for it does not exist ... or does it ?

  • @ironuzuka Haha! Thanks! I would absolutely hope that all future social aspects that they could potentially put inside the taverns (including leaderboards) would be customized in such a way to fit both the tavern and the biome they reside in (this includes the legendary pirate cave!) :)

  • Frist, I would rather them invest the time into an API so 3rd party developers can build these. Would build the sense of community outside/around the game. Secondly, this gives them more time to focus on building features into the game.

  • @rgbknights Amen to that! Having them implement it in a way that makes it cohesive in terms of the design (like they could streamline it into the play experience / make it part of the normal game loop) would be fantastic, but having 3rd party support is always a nice addition/fallback.

    EXCUSE ME?! WHO IS LeCHUCK?!

    alt text

I am Captain Maximillian Zeus: The Damned Rider of the Ferry!

I spent 30 hours straight on the Ferry of the Damned during the Alpha and another 30 straight hours during the Beta. Nobody has more NON-AFK time on the Ferry than ME!

I will not stand for some nobody with a mere 8 hours being recognized over me for this feat!! Death to this LeChuck!

Fear me LeChuck you have made an enemy this day!

BodhiSlam, do not worry I hold no anger towards you, Only LeChuck, but if you were to re-do that picture would replace his name with mine I'd me most appreciative.

For those who don't know my story follow the link in my name and you will know my Legend.

  • @maximillianzeus Fixed. Your achievements are of course important to the Sea of Thieves community and should be celebrated! :)

  • Fantastic idea. I hope Rare will implement it in the game

  • @bodhislam

~Bows low~ Thank ye most kindly for your act kindness! I most appreciate it Yarhar!

Now I'm off to go find LeChuck and do horrible Pirate things to him. Hahahahahah!!!!

I would love to see an API for this so that us 3rd party devs could have some fun. But I am also a huuuuuuge sucker for in-game leaderboards. IDK why but I love them.

So Rare please give us both cuz I'm greedy :)

  • @xcalypt0x I would also love both.

My worries with 3rd party programs is when it spirals out of control and the 3rd party programs become a necessary advantage over the default UI (this happened in World of Warcraft, for example) - as long as Rare was able to throttle how much 3rd party programs accessed/pushed, I think both can definitely work!

Hmm. I would think if it is just player's scores there wouldn't be too much of an advantage to gain, but perhaps I am just not being creative enough to think of any :P

    special items
    Special not spectial I imagine!

  • @bodhislam what's a spectial item?

  • @cpt-peach-beard I think it's a spelling error - I think they meant special - Maybe ghostly items? This quote was direct from Rare (but typed in by other individual - I found it @SeaOfThievesHQ on Twitter!) :)

  • @bodhislam This is a cool idea! I like the aspect of having the ability to advertise game-events in the Inn - it would make it easier for players to know what's going on without having to be plugged into social media!

  • If there would be fun leaderboards stats like the most tasty or the longest time beeing a ghost im fine with that, But most kills or strait up deaths that could ruin the fun of beeing able to goofy around if you are like me, say i don't mind if im not high on a leaderboard but still i don't want people to associate me to beeing c**p at a game just cuz i love to fool around aswell sometimes. And if stats exits that makes specially the competitive side off the game even more toxic, that means you will get even more crybabies yelling when they get "their" skill stolen or they die and blame bugs and lagg etc All because they trying to "farm" there way in to that leaderboard.

  • @bodhislam is it ok if i love your name but hate the idea of leaderboards of any kind in SoT?

  • @vxcougz Yeah you are totally right - reconsidering what I had posted I would also be in favor of more flavourful leaderboards that track strange things rather than just "who is the best". I'm not sure how Rare would implement them (or if they have the scope or resources to even consider it) - but seeing leaderboards with mini-achievement based things, like all the player-based easter eggs scattered around the game, would be rad.

Maybe that's what those easter-eggs represent - player leaderboards for doing extra-ordinary things! mind blown

@Jack-LittleShoe Hah! Yes. Thank you :)

  • @bodhislam Ye sounds good enough for me, Thoes sort of leaderboards are fun and still makes people wana play there way insteed of some feeling forced to play a specific way if they want to be on the "im b****s" leaderboards.

  • @bodhislam said in Asynchronous Leaderboards:

Yeah you are right I believe this is how they've come about, doing fun things so they had the stats for those (search for SoT stat posters)
I would only like these fun sorts of leaderboards not kill counts, stolen chests etc

  • This is a fantastic idea. I would love to see it inplemented. I love stuff like this.
