My solo experience (This is unbelievable)

  • I have to say that after playing solo in the Sloop for hours I didn't... have any issues. In fact that was an amazing time. I've felt the thrill of being chased with my chests, but I did what I had to do and it was a success. I successfully escaped galleons, I turned my chests and got my gold. This was an awesome experience. I thought it would be hard and I would be in disadvantage, but I somehow managed to survived and had a great time. I can say that Solo is possible and is fun actually. You don't have to worry about trolls ruining your voyages, you don't have to worryabout the brig abuse, you don't have to ask everyone to vote for a voyage, just you and the sea.
I have some advice for solo players to have a better experience and is trying to have the right mentality:
    • You have to recognize that you are an easy target.
    • Don't get mad if you are defeated, you are on your own after all.
    • Try to get away from any ship you encounter. You can actually outrun them if you play smart.
    • Don't expect to win every fight and get ready to lose a lot of loot.
    • Keep in mind that every other player is your enemy, so you should avoid them.
    • Remember that they have their own fun, so if you get killed, it's part of the game.

    Thanks pirates!

  • @dragotech123 Thank you for posting! I agree soloing is one of the best ways to experience this game. I really hope people can get around the learning curve and stop trying to pressure Rare into making Solo servers separate.

  • Could not agree more. I am a take control type of guy and that doesn't always go down well with a crew and just being a mute and pulling about at sails is just not as fun as being totally independent on the sea with your own sloop. Once the solo bug bites its hard to shake, playing solo in this game is far more riveting than playing as part of a crew in my opinion although both are fun in different ways.

  • Thank you, we need people like you that actually understands how this game is meant to be played. I love playing solo too and I also enjoy the risk of being on my own, it is very exciting. I also enjoy playing in a galleon with my friends or with random people but playing solo is by far my favourite thing to do in sea of thieves. It is more immersive and relaxing.
    See ya on the sea

  • Indeed...i played solo the last scale test and i had quite some fun: from fleeing from a galleon and another sloop(using sea rocks as an advantage) to actually heading towards another vessel(mind you im not quite the fan of pvp) and waving and playing a shanty near it and to be honest i did expect to get shot at but it didn't happen :).
There is a lot of fun to be had as a solo captain aswell as in a crew ;)

  • @cmm-solo haha same, in a crew i usually go for either navigator or steering the ship, both of those i somehow end up telling someone what to do :P def fun every now and then to go solo and just not worry about stepping on some toes.

  • I had a great time soloing as well. Being in control of a little sloop was really empowering and relaxing. The times that I encountered combat with other sloops were exciting, and, even when crewed by two, could be beaten. I even managed to take down a poorly crewed galleon. I can't wait for the merchant trade company quests to haul cargo peacefully (and sometimes not) across the sea on my little sloop.

  • Anyone else think it's annoying as hell to vote for your own voyage when running solo? Like, really. What's the point?

  • Thats it.
Wont say it all again. Just wanna ask for the solo comunity to join others battles agains galleons when see it on seas. Every time i see a galleon shoting at a sloop i help my sloop folk to get rid of it. Solo is solo but we will be strong together if you know what i mean!😜
My solo experience could not be better. I get drunk all the time, play my songs, dance, batles some galleons when without chests!!! Awesome play. Hope solo players descover how to deal with it like we did here. See you on the seas. But remember, lets ge together against galleons. In case of shotting me i will kick your as... back!!! And steal you, sink and ruin your life. Ill do it all drunk! 😎

  • AWESOME!

It is good to see a fellow player give it a try and find the enjoyment in it!

  • Another tip, though a lot of you might have already seen or heard this: Place explosive barrels on your bowsprit. This is an amazing tactic for taking down any type of ship, as it does massive damage to them, while only costing you 2-3 planks. If you are being attacked (or for those brave souls, if you are the attacker) ram into their ship and shoot the barrels. It works best if you can get the barrels next to as many enemies as possible. It will kill them or injury them very badly, so while they're away repair your ship. Then move your ship a bit out of boarding distance and start blasting them until they start to fire back. If you time everything right, you can overwhelm them. When you first kill some crew, the rest will usually (in my experience) go to repair while the rest wait to respawn. This opens time for you to repair and fire back.

Of course this is hard to pull off (I have failed 3 out of the five times I've tried it), but it's still one of the best tactics, and when pulled off correctly is the most devastating.

  • I'm glad to see many solo players. We are the owners of our destiny! Nobody will tell me what to do... until I get married so I will enjoy my freedom!
@Kim-Rod1984 You are right. I always try to cooperate with other sloops, that's real teamwork! Arrrgh!

  • You have the right attitude. Playing solo is more difficult (as the splash screen twice warns) and you have to plan your movements more carefully, but it's definitely a viable playstyle. The stacked odds make successes more enjoyable.

  • @dragotech123 In my opinion hardest part in a solo sloop is braving a storm alone when u cant even know direction u take because the wheel spin in every direction and u wanna get away from a isle ^^

  • @dragotech123 welcome to the solo club fellow cap’n. We be masters of our own fates!

I totally agree. It seems like a silly oversight, but it drives me bananas!

  • @dragotech123 I was wondering if you found and read the solo sloop tip tread on th forum before you tried solo? If so did it help and what did you find most useful? If not i encorage you to find and add your tips there and help continue to grow the solo sloop community.

  • One of my favorite things to do solo is to try and sneak onto other ships and just see how long i can chill before im caught.

  • @r0guesquirrel Me too lol

Look behind you at the map ;)

  • @dragotech123 I also played a lot solo and my experience was similar like yours. I have a few encounters with a sloop with two players. They sank my sloop twice and when they noticed that they were attacking me for a third time they apologized and helped me in my travel. I had a great time.

I think that your point and advices are perfect.

*Definitely setting map course and looking over the balcony.
    *Loading cannons first
    *Using crows nest sparingly
*getting food/drink/herbal nourishment BEFORE embarking on a quest.

P.S Sloops are faster into wind. Make sure you turn your sails until they 'pop'

  • @d0mino28 Thanks, im glad that help. But don't you mean sloop are faster agianst the wind? Or you just mean ship i general are faster when sails Pop with wind. Cause a galleon is far faster then a sloop if there both going with the wind.

  • you cant outrun a galleon, against the wind maybe, but if the wind is in your back and in the back of the galleon it will be faster than you and catch you. There was never a ship that could outrun me and my crew, if you are good with sails.

  • @joda1123
Then you did not met the right pirates on their sloop:)

  • I have only tried this with my freinds, and i LOVED IT! im so exiting about the release, gonna have a LAN party and drink captain morgan all day. But now when im reading this thread im all excited about the solo adventure i can have after the release weekend aswell:) Thought this was only gonna be a game that was fun in multiplayer, but now im all in on the solo adventure aswell!

  • im also an solo player (when my friends don't wanna sail toghter) and i absolutly love it. i don't understand when people are crying about playing solo, because you can have a lot of fun and great experience solo.

sorry for the bad englisch it is not my native langauge :)

  • Aaaah, at long last! Let the sloops rule the sea! True pirates fear nothing and no one! True pirates talks only with the sea and hear only the seagulls cry and the wind in their lone sail, true pirates sail on a sloop, not on a big, chuncky galleon fill with commodities and luxurious cabin and lot of cannons and shots and ammunitions and planks and bananas (bananas? Oh well...) and grog (sigh). Ok, i'm gettin carried away here. Sloops of the seven seas, unite to take over!!!

  • @joda1123
one scenario, you drop anchor on turning, pick it up fast, and smile and wave to galleon turning :)

  • @wirpsha if they drive past you and give you 4 cannons you'll be in trouble. Or if the galleon drops their anchor and 3-4 people pull it up it's almost as fast as the sloop. Did it all the time with my mates.

  • @Dragotech123 Money will talk. Even if takes more than a year after launch. (http://steamcharts.com/app/304390#All). I'm an ex-solo player and every advice you said it is true but it does not chance the fact that the PvP it's unbalanced.

  • NO NO NO NO !
I'm sorry but not ALL other ships are your enemy !
I have always try to uncourage every crews I have been with not to shoot "first" at ships we come across , not before saying "Ahoy" and play some music (nonverbal is better in this situation as not everyone speak English) first 😊 then see their intentions ,which is a thing who doesn't always work and I'm sorry😢 for the few friendly who have been attacked but know one thing I never took part.

OBVIOUSLY has you say hello all cannons are loaded and aimed at the ship , blunderbuss are ready and sword draw ... Just in case , I'm friendly not stupid 😉

But still once a little bit of trust is installed between two or more crew you can have a lot of fun.

Just yesterday we got join up by a one man sloop twice.
The first time we fight a skeleton fort together and when finished we only took two chests and a skull so the rest could go for the sloop .
The second time we did some Soul quests together and at the Outpost we gave the sloop a skull .

I have been on a sloop too an did join galleons on their quests which every they may be .

The hardest bit is build some trust , but once you got it you can have a hell of a good time ,
You may got kill by them by accident you may kill them by accident too but when we all know where we stand it's all good .

So please don't spend your gaming time running away from EVERY ships (even know some you really need to ) one could be ours and I always got some Grog for friendly guess 🍻

  • @dragotech123

Aye, we got your back, or your broadside... Whichever be facing us first anyhow. Glad you having a good time, and realize there be more to one side of the story when it comes to having a good time. May the wind be at your back, or in yer face if you trying to outrun us...

  • @enf0rcer said in My solo experience (This is unbelievable):

Against the wind is a better description yes.
The first time a galleon couldn't catch up so we went on ahead then circled an island and hit the anchor, he flew by and we went in the opposite direction. Use the sails to help your turn speed.

  • my solo experience was pretty good. but it leaves me with questions and concerns about the solo pirates future.
first my experience. sailing around getting the winds right and keeping watch for other ships was great. i usually had bad weather so the rocking of the ship made it quite hard to sail at times and get my sense of direction. things that i thought could help long distance voyages would be more stop offs for sunken ships and points of interest along the way, not necessarily islands. maybe spear fishing or regular fishing (things that you can only equip while near your ship and not use as a weapon. before i disembarked or embarked with my loot i always made sure to give a quick look around to make sure no one was near by. i only have 2 lights on, my map light and inside the ship. why? because i can hardly ever anchor close to an island or port without smashing into it. so i need to be able to spot the hole quickly.
my concerns and questions about the future of the solo pirate are:

    • when you become legendary, do you still have a sloop and or a manageable solo ship? or do you have to now have a crew?
    • being solo, are you restricted at all from progression regarding what you can and cannot do regarding voyages. IE: 2+ people needed to attain a chest, skull, etc?
    • and lastly (for now) will solo players stand a chance down the road against crews or are we doomed as cowards fleeing from every fight?
