Respawn System

  • For those of you who have played the Closed Beta and Scale Tests #1 - 2, you may have noticed that after you have sunk a ship, they respawn typically only 1 island way, in short range from the ship that sunk them.

This is an issue, as it allows players to constantly go after the same person who's sunk them over and over and over again. This kills game play because how can you continue to get treasure, deliver cargo or hunt skeleton captains if you are constantly bombarded with cannon balls? On top of this there is no satisfaction in sinking a ship because they almost immediately come back after being sunk.

I propose this, have ships that have been sunk respawn several islands away to stop them from constantly going after the same crew over and over again. Now, some of you may be thinking "Ill be too far away from my voyage, I'm not going to travel back to the island again". For that I suggest something else, Force a sunken ship to restart their voyage if they were on one. Generally speaking, if your ship has been sunk, you technically have failed your voyage because you did not survive, so doing this is realistic and fits perfectly.

Please feel free to edit this suggestion and add on to it, the respawn system is currently inefficient and needs to be reworked a little bit, by creating suggestions on how it can be improved, we are aiding in the development and betterment of the game.

  • @skyjtsmc Ahoy there!

Some good points well made, you may want to get involved in the already active discussion on this very matter over here:

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/33435/becoming-a-griefer-a-discussion-about-respawn-mechanics/

Just so pirates don't need to double up on the conversation and repeat themselves.

  • @musicmee Thanks friend!

Unfortunately though it says I do not have access to the thread for some reason, is that the Pioneer forum by chance?

  • @skyjtsmc Oooooh good point! That is odd I thought that thread was in the general Sea of Thieves category... apologies.

  • @musicmee wait theres a locked forum for pioneers too?! It was bad enough knowing I missed the boat as far as being able to access pioneer client but I can't even read the important forum...
Hopefully that one has far fewer requests to change things because this game is damn near perfect!

  • @bartimaeu It's very much the same don't worry :) :P

I agree though, I personally am happy with the game as is... but a few tweaks may go a little way to make the less sure people a bit more happy with the spawn system.

  • @musicmee I would really like to see them change the respawn after ship is destroyed. Once ship is sinking they should just respawn at nearest outpost, which would give them a chance to recover goods if you chose to take them there.

  • @skyjtsmc I saw this somewhere on this forum some time ago, but someone suggested that, if your ship has been sunk, you should be transfered to another server, you respawn on the same place(if there is no other ship around said place) but on another server. That way the losing team can't go after the winner who has less resources because he was just in a battle, over and over again until they win. I know you can escape and outrun if you are a good sailor, but why should the winner have to run and escape just because he has run low or out of resources? If it is another ship controlled by another crew, sure, why not, but if it is the same crew and ship over and over again I think it is just boring and unfair.

  • @musicmee That thread might be off limits to him but we can always point him to the mega-thread :)

And I'll take a brief moment to promote my own thread for respawn change suggestions :P

  • @xcalypt0x Cheeky! ;D Nice bit of self promotion! Love it.

  • A few things,

First if you sink a ship to loot it, you should expect retaliation. Being the aggressor this that should be expected. However, if the crew of the sunken ship gets sunk a second time... this is where I would say it's fair to have them re-spawn somewhere further out from their last point of entry.

Secondly, if you are on a voyage and you lost your booty... you lost the voyage. You shouldn't lose experience and I think that has been addressed as seen in the scale tests. You appear to gain experience when you end the voyage. But don't gain experience from turning in the booty just gold and prestige.

Thirdly, I still feel stolen loot should not be returned to the Outpost handlers. It should have to go to another recipient. This would make it harder (all be it not significantly) for those that grief smaller ships just to gain their booty, and it would keep them away from outposts where others are trying to turn booty from their long voyages.

  • Once sunk you should have a try or 2 to reclaim and hide your treasure so you can come back to it. But your ship should spawn way further away then it currently does. That way you can keep coming at the same boat and trolling them.

  • I may also suggest two thing for pirate respawning:
    • Respawn in different places of the ship, the bottom of the ship, climbing a ladder on the sides, the map table, anywhere on the ship.
    • Give 10 seconds of invincibility after coming back from the white screen after the ferry of the damned.
I think this may help a bit, (maybe not too much but a bit) to those who are getting killed by the spawn campers that don't allow proper respawning.
